Around the Grounds – Round 8

Published by Barron Von Crow on

Hello Community and welcome to another edition of Around the Grounds. Round 8 of the AFL season is in the books and we’ve got plenty to go through, including rookie priced player performances, the state league results and we’ll also take a look at the trading landscape across the Supercoach lands. So let’s go see what’s what!

Victoria

Collingwood

The Pies dropped out of the 8 on percentage last week after their 113-86 loss to Richmond. Nick Daicos (DEF/MID, $381,600, BE 68) had 25 disposals, 7 marks and 6 clangers for 80 SCPoints. Daicos has scored below his BE of 68 just once this season, so he should be fine to hit that for another week. Aiden Begg (RUC, $123,900, BE -46) had 13 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles with 2 hitouts for 37 SCPoints, Oliver Henry (FWD, $239,500, BE 46) had 10 disposals, 4 marks and 2 goals for 66 SCPoints, Beau McCreery (FWD, $254,500, BE 49) had 9 disposals, 2 marks and kicked 1.4 for 55 SCPoints and Jack Ginnivan (FWD, $333,000, BE 57) had 5 disposals, 2 marks and 3 goals for 44 SCPoints.

Collingwood had the bye in the VFL last week.

Carlton

Carlton didn’t have much issue streamrolling through Adelaide, winning 116-68. Jack Carroll (MID, $123,900, BE -82) had 18 disposals, 3 marks and 3 clearances for 59 SCPoints, Jordan Boyd (DEF, $161,200, BE 2) had 13 disposals, 2 marks and 4 inside 50’s for 62 SCPoints and Corey Durdin (FWD, $208,800, BE 6) had 9 disposals, 2 marks and 4 tackles for 59 SCPoints.

In the VFL, Carlton looked to have the game sown up at the end of the 3rd quarter, but a 10 goal to 1 final term from Frankston led them to a 86-79 win over the Blues. Brodie Kemp (DEF, $156,800) had 20 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles while Jesse Motlop (FWD, $117,300) finished with 17 disposals and 7 tackles and Alex Mirkov (RUC, $123,900) had 13 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 7 clearances and 54 hitouts.

Essendon

The Bombers were on-fire in the 2nd half, booting 10 goals to 3 which led to a 108-81 win over Hawthorn. Kaine Baldwin (FWD, $157,100, BE -12) had 8 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles and kicked 1.1 for 60 SCPoints, Nick Bryan (RUC, $166,600, BE 16) played his 2nd career game and had 6 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 11 hitouts for 50 SCPoints. Brayden Ham (MID/FWD, $236,900, BE 76) had 9 disposals and 4 marks for 32 SCPoints while Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (DEF, $262,200, BE 75) finished with 5 disposals and 1 mark for 23 SCPoints.

Not a great result for the Bombers in the VFL, taking a 156-62 loss to the Box Hill Hawks. Tom Hird (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 17 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles and 4 clearances, Garrett McDonagh (DEF, $117,300) had 15 disposals and 3 tackles, Cory Brand (DEF, $123,900) had 12 disposals and 4 marks and Cian McBride (RUC/FWD, $123,900) finished with 12 disposals, 5 marks, 7 tackles and 17 hitouts.

Geelong

Geelong didn’t have much issue taking care of the GWS Giants, winning 88-35. Tyson Stengle (FWD. $402,500, BE 25) had a quality game with 20 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles and 3 goals for 116 SCPoints. Mitchell Knevitt (MID, $117,300, BE -3) made his AFL debut and had 15 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles for 49 SCPoints, Cooper Stephens (MID, $123,900, BE -17) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and 5 rebound 50’s with 4 clangers for 66 SCPoints, Francis Evans (FWD, $123,900, BE 15) jad 10 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles for 35 SCPoints and Sam De Koning (DEF/FWD, $283,500, BE 6) had 17 disposals, 8 marks and 4 rebound 50’s for 82 SCPoints.

Geelong was a bit inaccurate in front of goal in their VFL match, kicking 10.17, but it was still enough to defeat North Melbourne 77-58. Shannon Neale (FWD, $123,900) had 13 disposals, 4 marks, 13 hitouts and kicked 1.3.

Hawthorn

Hawthorn was in the lead at half-time, but couldn’t match the Bombers after that, losing to Essendon 108-81. Max Lynch (RUC, $257,000, BE -16) had 12 disposals, 4 marks, 18 hitouts and kicked 2.1 for 100 SCPoints. Jackson Callow (FWD, $123,900, BE 6) had 10 disposals, 3 marks and 5 hitouts for 41 SCPoints while Connor MacDonald (MID/FWD, $203,400, BE 21) finished with 10 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles for 43 SCPoints. The Box Hill Hawks managed to flip the script in the VFL with a big 156-62 win over Essendon. Josh Morris (FWD, $123,900) had 22 disposals, 8 marks and 5 tackles, Jack Saunders (FWD, $123,900) had 16 disposals, 7 marks and kicked 1.2, Sam Butler (MID/FWD, $117,300) booted 3.1 with 15 disposals and 3 marks and Emerson Jeka (FWD, $171,500) kicked 5.1 with 7 disposals and 4 marks.

Melbourne

Melbourne showed why they’re the reigning Premiers after a strong performance against St Kilda, winning 93-55. They did not feature any rookie priced players in this one.

The Casey Demons remained undefeated in the VFL with a 89-59 win over Southport. Kade Chandler (FWD, $123,900) had a team high 27 disposals with 7 marks and 5 tackles and 2 behinds, Andy Moniz-Wakefield (MID, $102,400) kicked 2.1 with 18 disposals, 3 marks and 6 tackles and Jacob van Rooyen (DEF/FWD, $126,300) kicked 2 goals with 5 disposals, 6 tackles and 6 hitouts.

North Melbourne

North was never a chance in this game, losing 102-24 to Fremantle. Jason Horne Francis (MID, $314,300, BE 59) had 15 disposals, 2 marks and 7 clearances for 66 SCPoints. His last 3 scores are 65, 58 and 66, so should hit his BE for another week if you need to keep him. Paul Curtis (FWD, $154,300, BE -3) had 7 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles for 35 SCPoints and Flynn Perez (DEF, $198,200, BE 24) had 18 disposals, 4 marks and 4 clangers for 53 SCPoints.

North Melbourne had a loss in the VFL, going down to Geelong 77-58. Over in the VFL Richmond took care of Port Melbourne, winning 124-87. Tyler Sonsie (MID, $117,300) had a game high 33 disposals with 4 marks and 5 clearances, Will Martyn (MID, $161,100) had 26 disposals, 10 marks and 2 tackles, Thomson Dow (MID/FWD, $283,300) finished with 25 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles and 6 clearances, Sam Banks (DEF, $117,300) kicked 2.1 with 23 disposals and 3 marks and Bigoa Nyoun (DEF, $123,900) finished with 18 disposals and 7 marks.

St Kilda

The Saints failed to kick a goal in the first quarter, which put them behind from the start and led to a 93-55 loss to Melbourne. Marcus Windhager (MID/FWD, $179,900, BE 39) played 21% ToG and had 2 disposals and 2 behind for 12 SCPoints. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (DEF/MID, $241,700, BE 21) finished with 9 disposals and 6 marks for 35 SCPoints and Ben Long (DEF/FWD, $326,600, BE 65 ) had 13 disposals, 3 marks and 3 clangers for 49 SCPoints.

The Sandringham Zebras got the win over the Northern Bullants, defeating them 80-50. Mitch Owens ($117,300) had a game high 32 disposals with 3 marks, 3 tackles and 10 clearances and Leo Connolly (DEF, $228,600) had 18 disposals and 6 marks.

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs fell off the pace for the top 8 somewhat after their 86-69 loss to Port Adelaide. Buku Khamis (DEF, $127,400, BE 10) played his 2nd career game and had 9 disposals, 4 marks, 3 clangers and kicked 1.1 for 41 SCPoints. Robbie McComb (MID, $153,100, BE -47) had 16 disposals, 3 marks, 3 goal assists and 6 clangers for 73 SCPoints. 3 of those clangers came from frees against, so hopefully he can clean that up a bit this week.

Footscray had a bye in Round 7 of the VFL season last week.

South Australia

Adelaide

Another poor showing from the Crows, this time with a 116-68 loss to Carlton. Sam Berry (FWD, $318,200, BE 11) was solid with 21 disposals, 5 marks, 9 tackles but 6 clangers which moved his score to 90 SCPoints. Mitch Hinge (DEF, $278,500, BE 71) had 7 clangers in his 17 disposals and 8 marks which struck his score down to 54 SCPoints. Lachlan Gollant (FWD, $188,800, BE 56) was quiet with 9 disposals and 3 marks for 23 SCPoints, Jackson Hately (MID, $198,500, BE 16) had his first real midfield minutes at the Crows and had 15 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles and 4 clangers for 67 SCPoints. Brayden Cook (MID, $218,900, BE 47) had 8 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and a goal for 44 SCPoints, Will Hamill (DEF, $233,700, BE 29) had 15 disposals and 4 marks for 64 SCPoints and Joshua Rachele (MID/FWD, $256,200, BE 63) finished with 12 disposals, 2 marks and kicked 1.2 for 40 SCPoints. He hasn’t scored above 50 since Round 4, so looking like it’s time to be moving him on if you’ve still got him at this stage of the year.

Adelaide had a 125-71 win over West Adelaide in Round 6 of the SANFL season. Jake Soligo (MID, $117,300) had 29 disposals, 13 tackles, 7 clearances and a goal, Patrick Parnell (DEF, $123,900) had 19 disposals, 4 tackles and a goal, Kieran Strachan (RUC, $273,500)had 19 disposals, 4 tackles and 7 clearances and Josh Worrell (DEF, $123,900) kicked 2 goals with 14 disposals and 3 marks.

Western Australia

Fremantle

The Dockers are flying high on 2nd place on the ladder after their 102-24 demolition of North Melbourne. Jye Amiss (FWD, $175,800, BE -4) made his AFL debut and started off well with 9 disposals, 5 marks and 2 goals for 75 SCPoints. He was averaging 10.6 disposals in the WAFL this year, so not a prolific ball winner, but should score decently if he can jag a few goals. Reminds me a bit of Lachlan Gollant SC wise. Bailey Banfield (FWD, $223,000, BE 37) had 93 SCPoints from his 18 disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles and 2 goals. Liam Henry (FWD, $228,600, BE 72) added 9 disposals and 3 marks for 23 SCPoints, Brandon Walker (DEF, $236,800, BE 61) had 13 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles for 49 SCPoints, Josh Treacy (FWD, $242,300, BE 35) had 12 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles and 3 hitouts for 75 SCPoints and Nathan O’Driscoll (DEF/MID, $296,100, BE 55) finished with 16 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles and 1.1 for 61 SCPoints. He’s got a BE of 55 coming up with a season average of 62.0 SCPoints but does have a couple of scores in the 40’s in his average, so there’s a small chance he takes a price hit but should hopefully stay even if he can repeat his last two scores (57 and 61).

The Peel Thunder had a narrow 88-87 loss to Perth in their Round 4 match of the WAFL season. Mitch Crowden (MID, $257,300) had 28 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles, Karl Worner (DEF/MID, $102,400) had 21 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles and Neil Erasmus (MID, $189,900) kicked 1.1 with 19 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles.

West Coast

West Coast had another game where they were impacted by COVID, which helped lead to a 105-30 loss to Brisbane. Patrick Naish (MID/FWD, $330,000, BE 74) had 17 disposals, 3 marks and 46 SCPoints, Declan Mountford (DEF/MID, $102,400, BE -13) had 8 disposals and 3 clangers for 16 SCPoints, Callum Jamieson (RUC, $123,900, BE -27) finished with 12 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles and 13 hitouts for 72 SCPoints, Isiah Winder (MID/FWD, $123,900, BE 9) had 10 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles for 40 SCPoints and Luke Foley (DEF, $290,700, BE 65) had 17 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles for 77 SCPoints.

West Coast did not play their WAFL game due to COVID issues with their team.

GWS

GWS kicked 2 goals in the first quarter and then managed just 2 more for the rest of the game which resulted in a 88-35 loss to Geelong. Cooper Hamilton (MID/FWD, $102,400, BE -63) had 10 disposals, 2 marks, 3 marks and 3 rebound 50’s for 55 SCPoints and Finn Callaghan (MID, $247,200, BE 48) had 15 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles but 6 clangers which moved his score down to 33 SCPoints.

GWS had the week off in the VFL due to the bye.

Sydney

Sydney got the game even by the 3rd of the 3rd quarter but failed to score a goal in the last which led to a 75-61 loss to Gold Coast. Patrick McCartin (DEF/FWD, $290,800, BE 32) had 10 disposals, 10 marks and 7 rebound 50’s and 5 clangers for 94 SCPoints. Gold Coast

The Suns managed to come home strong, winning 75-61 against Sydney at the SCG. Looks like there’s a bit of midfield upgrading going on this week with Brayshaw, Boak and Cripps the popular choice. All are available for under $600K which seems like good value given what we know they can produce. Not at all a surprise to see Mo Rioli as the most traded in option either, with guys near their BE like O’Driscoll, JHF and Rachele being moved on. Might be a bit of panic trading out with Rosas, he can go back to making money once that poor score rolls out his 3 round average (provided he doesn’t hatch another poor score this week!).

And that’ll be it for me this week, as usual you can reach me on the Twitter @BarronVonCrow or you can leave a question/comment in the section below. See you all next week!

TRIGGA HAPPY

Nice work Baz.

So is Rioli a must have?
Me finks so.

So who would u trade?

Ward- hasn’t worked out like I thought he would, hasn’t made much $. Feel a big score is coming.

McDonald- plodding along. Not setting world on fire.

Rosas – 18 FFS. Again hasn’t made a heap of cash..

S C tragic

Wow, didn’t see that coming, thought he would be sacked, jumped the gun methinks

Amazing amount of research here. A must read to keep in touch with the broader footy view.
Do we have any insight as to Tsitas or Hollands getting a game? Such popular pre season picks and could be handy in the second half of the year as permanent bench options if they get a run

TRIGGA HAPPY

Could be real handy if get a gig around bye time. 😉
