Around the Grounds – Round 5

Published by Barron Von Crow on

Hello community and welcome to another week of Around the Grounds. We’re 5 rounds into the season and it certainly has been a chaotic one at times, this week is looking like we may be in store for some more with rookies such as Jason Horne-Francis and Josh Rachele hitting a (hopefully temporary) ceiling, while we also deal with a few non-playing rookies in sides like Josh Gibcus and Dylan Stephens, deal with injuries like Aaron Hall and Mitch Hinge as well as add in underperforming mid-pricers and premos like Matt Rowell, Brodie Grundy and Lachie Whitfield. Not much happening there at all! Either way, we’ll go through the rookies around the league first up, then hit our normal break evens and trades to see what other Supercoachers around the country are doing with their sides. So let’s get to it!

Victoria

Carlton

The Blues had an 8-goal lead at half-time but gave up 6 goals to 1 in the 3rd and just held on for a 94-91 win over Port Adelaide on Sunday at the ‘G. Charlie Curnow (FWD, $330,400, BE 17) scored 104 SCPoints, kicking 5 goals with 15 disposals and 5 marks. Corey Durdin (FWD, $197,400, BE -4) added a single goal with 8 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles for 45 SCPoints and Luke Parks (DEF, $199,600, BE 47) had 7 disposals and 2 marks for 32 SCPoints.

Carlton’ VFL side had their first loss of the season, going down 97-72 to Richmond. Jack Carroll (MID, $123,900) had 23 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles, Tom Williamson (DEF, $244,000) had 23 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles and Sam Philp (FWD, $123,900) had 13 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and 2 goals.

Collingwood

Collingwood fought hard in this one, posting a 5 goal to 3 final term, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Brisbane, losing 98-91. Reef McInnes (MID, $159,000, BE 3) had 10 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles and kicked 2.2 for 68 SCPoints. Nathan Kreuger (DEF, $198,100, BE -11), whose name sounds like one of those old-time car horns, had 12 disposals, 5 marks, and kicked 2.2 for 78 SCPoints. Tom Wilson (DEF, $199,600, BE 7) had 7 disposals for 41 SCPoints and Nick Daicos (DEF/MID, $354,300, BE 9) found plenty of the pill with 27 disposals, but also had 4 clangers and only 5 contested possessions, which kept his score low-ish at 71 SCPoints. A bit disappointing given his stat line, but not a disaster by any means and the more important thing for us is he’s still racking up possessions, which will usually lead to points.

Collingwood’s VFL side had their first loss of the year, losing 96-79 to GWS. Finlay Macrae (MID, $206,800) had 25 disposals, 3 marks, 8 tackles and a goal, Cooper Murley (MID/FWD, $117,300) had 18 disposals and 7 marks, Isaac Chugg (DEF, $123,900) kicked 2 goals with 13 disposals and 5 marks and Oliver Henry (FWD, $231,400) kicked 3 goals with 10 disposals.

Essendon

The Bombers were in this one at half-time but could only manage 3 goals to the Dockers 10 in the second half to end with a 107-59 loss to Fremantle. Ben Hobbs (MID, $153,300, BE -4) made his AFL debut with 15 disposals, 6 marks and 5 tackles for 65 SCPoints. That’s not a world beating score, but with people trading out the likes of Horne-Francis he’s on the list as a potential downgrade target. Nic Martin (FWD, $248,300, BE -16) had 17 disposals, 3 marks and 2.1 for 76 SCPoints, while Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (DEF, $221,300, BE -18) had 20 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles for 89 SCPoints

Essendon remain the only AFL team without a win in the VFL after a 136-111 loss to Port Melbourne. Braydon Ham (MID/FWD, $249,200) had 20 disposals, 5 marks and 6 tackles, Tex Wanganeen (FWD, $102,400) kicked 2.3 with 13 disposals and 4 tackles, Kaine Baldwin (FWD, $123,900) booted 5.1 with 12 disposals, 6 marks and 3 hitouts and Nick Bryan (RUC, $166,600) had 44 hitouts with 12 disposals, 4 marks and 5 tackles.

Geelong

Geelong went into the final quarter with a slight lead but failed to kick a goal in the 4th quarter which lead to a 92-80 loss to Hawthorn. Sam De Koning (DEF/FWD, $189,000, BE -1) had 9 disposals, 2 marks and 48 SCPoints while Tyson Stengle (FWD, $293,600, BE33) kicked 3 goals with 15 disposals, 4 marks and 4 clangers for 66 SCPoints.

Over in the VFL the Cats had a 103-56 loss to the Southport Sharks. Francis Evans (FWD, $123,900) had 21 disposals, 5 marks and kicked 3.1, Cooper Stephens (MID, $123,900) had 19 disposals, 6 marks and 7 tackles and Nick Stevens (MID, $123,900) had 18 disposals and 2 marks.

Hawthorn

The Hawks kicked 3 goals before the Cats even touched the ball once and then held them goalless in the last quarter on their way to a 92-80 win over Geelong on Monday. Connor MacDonald (MID/FWD, $184,200, BE 33) had 16 disposals, 3 marks and 5 inside 50’s for 53 SCPoints, Josh Ward (MID, $227,900, BE 26) had 18 disposals, 3 tackles and 5 clearances for 65 SCPoints and Denver Grainger-Barras (DEF, $251,600, BE 84) finished with 5 disposals and 3 tackles for 35 SCPoints

The Box Hill Hawks had a bye in the VFL

Melbourne

Melbourne put a big W on the board and remain undefeated for 2022 after their 120-53 win over GWS. Sam Weideman had 8 disposals, 4 marks and 1.1 for 43 SCPoints.

The Casey Demons remained on top of the VFL ladder after their 90-55 win over Coburg. Taj Woewodin (MID, $117,300) had 24 disposals, 5 marks and 5 tackles, Toby Bedford (FWD, $123,900) kicked 2 goals with 15 disposals and 4 tackles and Bailey Laurie (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 22 disposals, 6 marks and 2 behinds.

North Melbourne

If the Roos removed the 1st quarter, in which they gave up 8 goals to 1, you could look at this as a competitive game where they kicked 10 goals to the Bulldogs 13 in the final 3 quarters, but overall, still a smashing, losing to the Western Bulldogs 139-71. Tristian Xerri (RUC/FWD, $336,500, BE 46) had a great bounce back game with 20 disposals, 26 hitouts, a goal, 8 clearances and 7 clangers, but still scored 103 SCPoints. He’s become a very solid F5-F6 option, with 4 of his 5 games scoring between 79 and 120 SCPoints. The more important thing is he again took 2/3rds of the ruck contests with Goldstein in the side, so a clear role now over 5 games that will allow him to score points, which is what we want to see. Jason Horne-Francis (MID, $316,200, BE 51) had a bit of a messy game, he had 18 disposals and 4 marks, but added in 9 clangers (4 frees again) for 39 SCPoints. We’ll cop games like that occasionally from rookies, even from some the best of the lot. A lot of people are trading him out this week due to his relatively (for a rookie) high BE, but I think you’d target other areas first if you have them.

Also featuring in this one, Flynn Perez (DEF, $147,000, BE 12) had 10 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles for 41 SCPoints and Eddie Ford (FWD, $206,800, BE 71) had 6 disposals, 1 goal and 3 clangers for 16 SCPoints.

North’s VFL side moved to 2-1 for the year after a 85-79 win over Footscray. Matt McGuinness (DEF/FWD, $123,900) had 28 disposals (24 kicks) and 12 marks, Miller Bergman (DEF/MID, $117,300) had 20 disposals, 6 marks and 2 tackles and Charlie Comben (RUC/FWD, $123,900) kicked 4.1 with 14 disposals and 7 marks and Paul Curtis (FWD, $117,300) also booted 4.1 with 10 disposals, 3 marks and 7 tackles.

Richmond

Richmond staged an impressive comeback to take the lead half-way through the 3rd quarter, but they couldn’t maintain it, eventually going down 101-82 to Adelaide. Thomson Dow (MID/FWD, $291,900, BE 31) had 15 disposals and 2 tackles for 55 SCPoints, Ben Miller (DEF, $184,800, BE 5) had 4 disposals, 1 mark and 2 tackles for 45 SCPoints and Hugo Ralpsmith (MID/FWD, $275,900, BE 38) finished with 15 disposals and 1 tackle for 51 SCPoints.

In their VFL match, Richmond took a 97-72 win over Carlton. Will Martyn (MID, $161,100) had 24 disposals, 8 marks and 3 tackles, Samuel Banks (DEF, $117,300) had 22 disposals, 9 marks and 2 tackles, Maurice Rioli (MID/FWD, $123,900) finished with 21 disposals, 2 marks and 7 tackles and Judson Clarke (MID/FWD, $117,300) kicked 2 goals with 16 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles. Samson Ryan (RUC/FWD, $123,900) also kicked 2 goals with 10 disposals, 2 marks and 14 hitouts.

St Kilda

The Saints had a 1 goal lead into half-time, but managed to push that out further by the end of the game, taking a 87-61 win over the Gold Coast to sit 3rd on the ladder. Jack Hayes (RUC/FWD, $242,000, BE -22) returned and had a big day out, finishing with 16 disposals, 5 marks, 5 hitouts, 3 clearances and a goal for 105 SCPoints. Big effort for him and a nice return to Supercoach form for him after his triple digit score in Round 1. Marcus Windhager (MID/FWD, $117,300, BE -8) had 11 disposals, 2 marks and 2 clearances for 43 SCPoints while Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (DEF/MID, $199,100, BE 18) had 15 disposals and 5 marks with 4 reboudn 50’s for 44 SCPoints and Ben Long (DEF/FWD, $288,400, BE 16) continued his underrated start to the year in Supercoach with 86 SCPoints from 20 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles. After 3 games his SC average for the year now sits at 80.7 SCPoints.

It was a repeat of the AFL results in the VFL with Sandringham taking a 109-101 win over the Gold Coast. Mitch Owens (MID, $117,300) had 26 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles and 2 behinds, Leo Connolly (DEF, $228,600) had 21 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles and Max Heath (RUC/FWD, $123,900) booted 3 goals with 16 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 28 hitouts

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs tore out to a 7-goal lead at the end of the 1st quarter and weren’t troubled after that, defeating North Melbourne 139-71. Ryan Gardner (DEF, $255,700, BE 28) had 16 disposals and 8 marks for 90 SCPoints, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (FWD, $207,400, BE 79) managed 5 disposals, 2 marks and a goal for 31 SCPoints and Mitch Wallis (FWD, $214,100, BE 61) had 7 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and 1.1 for 41 SCPoints.

Footscray played North in the VFL as well, but suffered a 85-79 loss. Robbie McComb (MID, $102,400) had a team high 28 disposals with 6 marks and a goal, Louis Butler (MID, $130,600) had 25 disposals, 8 marks and 3 tackles and Buku Khamis (DEF, $127,400) kicked 4.1 with 16 disposals, 6 marks and 7 hitouts.

South Australia

Adelaide

Adelaide posted their 2nd win of the season and moved to 2-1 at Adelaide Oval after a 101-82 win over Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Joshua Rachele (MID/FWD, $277,600, BE 6) booted 2.2, but with just 11 disposals it put his score at 49 SCPoints. He’s averaging 73.4 SCPoints for the year, but scoring is fluctuating wildly, either posting a score below 60 or above 100 so far in his 5 games. It does make it a difficult decision on whether to start him or not, so it’s a bit of a coin-toss on what you’ll get week to week from him. Sam Berry (FWD, $250,400, BE 26) played his first game of 2022 and had 16 disposals (13 handballs) 2 marks and 4 tackles for 73 SCPoints, Lachlan Gollant (FWD, $195,300, BE 29) had 9 disposals and 4 marks for 40 SCPoints, Brayden Cook (MID, $197,900, BE 22) finished with 17 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles for 74 SCPoints and Billy Frampton (FWD, $279,800, BE 9) was busy in defence with 22 disposals, 9 marks, 6 rebound 50’s and 5 clangers for 82 SCPoints. Still hasn’t gained DEF eligibility yet, but that will surely come at the next set of changes.

Adelaide had a 7-goal lead at half-time against Glenelg in the SANFL, then gave up a 10 goal to zip 3rd quarter which lead to a 102-87 loss. Jackson Hately (MID, $188,700) had a team high 27 disposals with 3 marks, 3 tackles and 4 clearances, Josh Worrell (DEF, $123,900) had 24 disposals and 4 marks, Patrick Parnell (DEF, $123,900) had 21 disposals and 4 tackles and Tariek Newchurch (FWD, $123,900) kicked 3.1 with 12 disposals and 6 tackles.

Port Adelaide

Port had a terrific comeback in this after looking well out of the game, but fell just short of getting the win, being defeated by Carlton 94-91. Sam Hayes (RUC, $123,900, BE -26) played his first AFL game after being drafted in 2017 and had 5 disposals, 4 tackles and 20 hitouts for 75 SCPoints. He’s one that’s going to be reliant on his ruck work to score and not his around the ground impact. Jackson Mead (MID/FWD, $203,300, BE 41) had 10 disposals, 4 marks and 28 SCPoints.

Port also had a loss in the SANFL, losing to Richmond 75-59. Jase Burgoyne (DEF/MID, $117,300) had 20 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and a goal, Taj Schoefield (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and 10 tackles and Dylan Williams (FWD, $123,900) kicked 3.3 with 13 disposals and 7 marks.

Western Australia

Fremantle

Fremantle moved up to 2nd on the ladder after their 107-59 win over Essendon on Sunday. Nathan O’Driscoll (DEF/MID, $238,900, BE -69) was again impressive and had 22 disposals, 3 marks, 3 clearances and 6 inside 50’s for 103 SCPoints. That’s his second triple digit score in as many games, so is firming as a much start D6 option this week. Bailey Banfield (FWD, $222,600, BE 26) had 10 disposals, 2 marks and 2.2 for 57 SCPoints and Brandon Walker (DEF, $231,400, BE 75) had 14 disposals and 7 clangers for 28 SCPoints.

The WAFL season started off last week, the Peel Thunder had a 110-78 win over East Fremantle. Karl Worner (DEF/MID, $102,400) had 31 disposals, 10 marks, 2 tackles and kicked 2.1, Mitch Crowden (FWD, $257,300) kicked 2 goals with 20 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles and Jye Amiss (FWD, $175,800) kicked 1.2 with 17 disposals, 5 marks and 3 tackles.

West Coast

The Eagles were never a chance in this one, kicking just 2 goals in the first half on the way to a 121-58 loss to Sydney. Patrick Naish (MID/FWD, $322,000, BE 20) led the Eagles with 26 disposals, but also had 8 clangers and 18 uncontested possessions which dropped his score down to 76 SCPoints. Hugh Dixon (RUC/FWD, $216,300, BE -25) had 9 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles and 11 hitouts for 54 SCPoints, while Bailey J. Williams (RUC/FWD, $236,700, BE 11) finished with 11 disposals, 2 marks, 14 hitouts a goal, but 7 clangers for 48 SCPoints. Luke Foley (DEF, $284,400, BE 31) had a solid scoring game with 17 disposals, 7 marks and 4 tackles for 77 SCPoints and Willie Rioli (MID/FWD, $317,600) wouldn’t trouble the scoreboard this week, while also having 9 disposals, 5 marks and 5 tackles for 35 SCPoints.

West Coast started their WAFL season with a 62-60 loss to Perth. Xavier O’Neill (MID/FWD, $251,200) had a team high 27 disposals with 5 marks, 2 tackles and 1.2, Brady Hough (MID, $147,200) had 19 disposals, 9 marks and 3 tackles and Luke Strnadica (RUC, $102,400) had 17 disposals, 3 marks and 29 hitouts.

Josh Fahey (DEF, $117,300) had 21 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles, James Peatling (DEF, $242,400) had 19 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles and kicked 2.1 and Will Shaw (DEF/MID, $123,900) had 2 goals from his 6 disposals.

Sydney

Sydney had an easy one with this after a 121-58 win over West Coast to move into the top 4 to end Round 5. Ben Ronke (FWD, $219,900, BE -38) had his 2nd good game this year, finishing with 19 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 1.2 for 92 SCPoints. James Bell (FWD, $227,300, BE 60) had 10 disposals, 3 marks and 1 goal for 40 SCPoints while Patrick McCartin (DEF/FWD, $262,000, BE 29) continued to be reliable in defence, nabbing 68 SCPoints from 10 disposals and 4 marks.

Sydney were up by 1 point at half-time of their VFL match against the Northern Bullants, but only adding another point in the 3rd quarter put them behind the eightball and led to a 104-85 loss. Lewis Taylor (MID/FWD, $188,400) had 26 disposals (22 kicks), 7 marks and 3 tackles, Will Gould (DEF, $123,900) had 25 disposals (23 kicks), 6 marks, 2 tackles and 2 hitouts, Dylan Stephens (MID, $202,300) had 21 disposals, 4 marks and 5 tackles and Barry O’Connor (DEF, $123,900) kicked 2 goals with 15 disposals, 5 tackles and 3 hitouts.

Brisbane had the bye in the VFL.

Gold Coast

The Suns were within striking distance at half time against the Saints, but couldn’t keep up the momentum in the 2nd half, ending up with a 87-61 loss to St. Kilda.
