Around the Grounds – Round 4

Published by Barron Von Crow on

Hello Community and welcome to another week of around the grounds. Round 4 was a bit all over the place, we had injuries, suspensions, late outs, some poor scores, just a lot of moving parts that made it a tough week for some to navigate. In the short term we’ve got injuries to the likes of Patrick Cripps, Nic Nat and Mitch Hinge, we’ve got the suspension of Braydon Preuss, just some short term pain that always make deciding to hold or trade a difficult decision.

For now, we’re gonna go take a look at what our rookie selections did last week, both in the AFL and the state leagues and then move on to what moves are being made in Supercoach.

Victoria

Carlton

Carlton took their first loss of 2022 after a 92-62 defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast. Charlie Curnow (FWD, $302,200, BE 44) kicked 1.2 with 11 dispoals, 7 marks and 2 tackles for 70 SCPoints while Jordan Boyd (DEF, $123,900, BE -2) had 12 disposals and 4 marks for 39 SCPoints.

The Blues reversed their fortunes in the VFL, taking the lead in the 2nd quarter and never surrendering it to end up with a 113-61 win over the Gold Coast. Luke Parks (DEF, $199,600) had 20 disposals and 8 marks, Brodie Kemp (DEF, $156,800) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and 2 clearances, Sam Philp (FWD, $123,900) kicked 3.1 with 14 disposals and 3 marks and Alex Mirkov (RUC, $123,900) had 10 disposals, 2 marks, 4 clearances and 21 hitouts.

Collingwood

The Pies had 7 more shots at goal and 19 more Inside 50’s in this one, but inaccurate kicking cost them in the end, ending up with a 87-74 loss to West Coast. Reef McInnes (MID, $123,900, BE -9) finished with 6 disposals for 21 SCPoints, Tom Wilson (DEF, $199,600, BE 12) had 16 disposals, 5 marks and 6 inside 50’s, but 4 clangers to end up on 68 SCPoints. Oliver Henry (FWD, $231,400, BE 49) had 5 disposals, 2 marks and kicked 1.1 for 28 SCPoints, Jack Ginnivan (FWD, $281,800, BE 63) had 12 diisposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles and kicked 2.2 for 60 SCPoints and last but by certainly no means least, Nick Daicos (MID, $304,700, BE -37) put on an amazing game with a game high 32 disposals, along with 7 marks and 5 tackles with 4 clearances for 125 SCPoints.

In the VFL Collingwood had a 35 point win over the Northern Bullants, winning 97-62. Finlay Macrae (MID, $206,800) had 18 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances and a goal, Cooper Murley (MID/FWD, $117,300) booted 1.1 with 13 disposals and 3 marks and Arlo Draper (MID, $117,300) had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles

Essendon

It was a close one, but Essendon put their first W on the board for 2022 with a 103-99 win over Adelaide. Tex Wanganeen (FWD, $102,400, BE 3) had just 2 disposals and 1 mark with 2 clangers for 20 SCPoints, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (DEF, $221,300, BE 32) had 10 disposals and 5 marks for 57 SCPoints and Nic Martin (FWD, $195,500, BE -40) was again good with 22 disposals, 2 marks, 5 inside 50’s and 1.1 for 84 SCPoints. He’s quickly becoming a must-start option in our forward lines.

In the Bombers VFL matchup with Frankston, the lead went back and forth throughout the game, but a 5 goal to 2 last quarter from Frankston gave them a 138-108 win. Garrett McDonagh (DEF, $117,300) had 21 disposals and 3 tackles, Tom HIrd (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 16 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles, Nick Bryan (RUC, $166,600) had 15 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances and 40 hitouts and Patrick Voss (DEF/FWD, $102,400) kicked 3.1 with 11 disposals, 5 marks and 4 tackles.

Geelong

Geelong kept the Lions to just a lone goal in the final quarter, which was enough to take back the lead and a 80-70 win over Brisbane. Sam De Koning (DEF/FWD, $158,400, BE -19) had 9 disposals and 5 marks for 62 SCPoints and Tyson Stengle (FWD, $270,600, BE 17) finished with 11 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 1.2 for 71 SCPoints.

Over in the VFL Geelong replicated the result, taking a 90-83 win over Brisbane. Cooper Stephens (MID, $123,900) had 26 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and 5 clearances, Nick Stevens (MID, $123,900) had 21 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles.

Hawthorn

It just wasn’t Hawthorn’s day in this one against St. Kilda, losing 142-73. Finn Maginness (MID/FWD, $162,700, BE 42) had 13 disposals and 3 clangers for 27 SCPoints, Connor MacDonald (MID, $171,800, BE 27) had 10 disposals (8 handballs) for 23 SCPoints, Josh Ward (MID, $210,900, BE 29) managed 9 disposals and 3 clangers for 41 SCPoints and Denver Grainger-Barras (DEF, $238,400, BE 30) had 6 disposals, and 3 marks for 27 SCPoints.

The Box Hill Hawks had the lead for most of the game and ran away with a 99-56 win over Sandringham in the VFL. Ned Long (MID/FWD, $102,400) had 15 disposals, 10 tackles and 4 clearances, Jai Serong (MID/FWD, $117,300) had 11 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles and Jackson Callow (FWD, $123,900) booted 1.1 with 10 disposals and 4 marks with 2 clearances.

Melbourne

Melbourne made it 4 for 4 so far in 2022 after defeating Port Adelaide 68-36 at Adelaide Oval on Thuyrsday night. Sam Weideman (FWD, $200,900, BE -1) had 7 disposals with 3 marks and 2 tackles for 46 SCPoints.

In the VFL the Casey Demons were down by a point at half time, but proved too strong in the 2nd, to take a 100-65 win over Williamnstown. Oskar Baker (MID, $255,300) had 23 disposals, 4 tackles and 3 marks, Toby Bedford (FWD, $123,900) had 15 disposals, 2 tackles and 2 clearances, Fraser Rosman (FWD, $123,900) had 15 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles and Andy Moniz-Wakefield ($102,400) had 2 goals with 8 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles

North Melbourne

After their Round 3 match against Brisbane many people expected North Melbourne to respond and they certainly showed they’ve still got some fight in ‘em, even with the 86-75 loss to Sydney. Jason Horne-Francis (MID, $306,600, BE 20) again displayed how good he will be, nabbing 23 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles and 6 clearances for 93 SCPoints. Tristian Xerri (FWD, $315,200, BE 58) again got the majority of the ruck work, taking 58 ruck contests to Goldsteins 32, but only had 4 hitouts to advantage from those contests (Goldstein had 3), along with 6 disposals and a goal for 46 SCPoints. Xerri’s HTA % of 17.4% was his worst return so far this year, he had 33.3%, 29.2% and 28% in his previous 3 games,so at least there’s an obvious reason why he scored less this week, but also shows he can improve on that too. Lastly, Flynn Perez (DEF, $147,000, BE 27) had 11 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles for 32 SCPoints.

North Melbourne had a bye in the VFL for Round 3.

Richmond

Richmond took advantage of their shots on goal, kicking 15.9 and had a quality win against the Western Bulldogs, winning 99-61. Ben Miller (DEF, $160,000, BE -9) had 9 disposals, 2 marks and 4 tackles for 57 SCPoints, Joshua Gibcus (DEF, $218,500, BE 17) had 11 disposals, 4 marks and 5 rebound 50’s for 49 SCPoints, Thomson Dow (MID/FWD, $250,200, BE -36) continued his strong for mwith 15 disposals, 2 marks and 7 tackles for 83 SCPoints and Hugo Ralphsmith (MID/FWD, $264,300, BE 27) scored solidly with 71 SCPoints from 19 disposals, 7 marks and 6 rebound 50’s.

Richmond also got the W in the VFL, defeating Footscray 95-70. Tom Brown (DEF, $135,300) had 23 disposals and 7 marks, Maurice Rioli (MID/FWD $123,900) had 21 disposals, 6 marks and a goal, Sam Banks (DEF, $117,300) had 19 disposals, 9 marks and 8 tackles and Tyler Sonsie (MID, $117,300) had 17 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles

In the VFL the Sandringham Zebra’s failed to kick a goal in the first half and ended up booting 7.14 to finish with a 99-56 loss to the Box Hill Hawks. Mitch Owens (MID, $117,300) had 22 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and 3 clearances and Josiah Kyle (FWD, $102,400) booted 3 behinds with 6 disposals, 3 marks and 1 tackle.

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs had enough chances, but didn’t convert on the scoreboard, kicking 7.19 to end up with a 99-61 loss to Richmond. Louis Butler (MID, $130,600, BE 10) played his first game of 2022 and had 43 SCPoints from 13 disposals, Jamara Ugle-Hagan (FWD, $213,500, BE 47) had just 5 disposals and 2 marks with 3 clangers for 10 SCPoints, Mitch Wallis (FWD, $223,700, BE 65) had 7 disposals and 2 marks for 22 SCPoints and Ryan Gardner (DEF, $238,200, BE 53) had 8 disposals, 2 marks and 4 clangers for 30 SCPoints.

South Australia

Adelaide

The Crows had another narrow loss last week, this time to Essendon, losing 103-99. Josh Rachele (MID/FWD, $259,300, BE 10) had a nice return to Supercoach form with 106 SCPoints from 19 disposals, 9 marks and 3 goals. Lastly, Billy Frampton (FWD, $242,800, BE 2) had 71 SCPoints from 15 disposals, 3 marks and 7 rebound 50’s,

Adelaide moved to 2-0 in the SANFL after their 116-78 win over North Adelaide. Jackson Hately (MID, $188,700) had a game high 35 disposals with 8 marks, 3 tackles and 3 clearances, Sam Berry (FWD, $250,400) had 26 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 5 clearances and Fischer McAsey (DEF, $161,600) had 18 disposals and 4 marks

Port Adelaide

Thursday night footy wasn’t kind to the Power, failing to kick a goal in the first half and ending up with a 68-36 loss to Melbourne. Jed McEntee (MID/FWD, $123,900, BE -3) had 6 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles for 33 SCPoints, Jackson Mead (MID, $180,700, BE -21) finished with 14 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles for 49 SCPoints (4 clangers) and Sam Mayes (FWD, $201,400, BE 46) had 5 disposals and 2 marks for 19 SCPoints.

It was a close one for most of the game, but more inaccurate goal kicking hurt Port here, ending up with a 111 to 101 loss to South Adelaide. Martin Frederick (DEF, $224,500) had 21 disposals, 4 tackles and a goal, Jake Pasini (DEF, $123,900) had 20 disposals, 3 marks and 4 tackles and Jase Burgoyne (DEF/MID, $117,300) had 16 disposals and 2 marks.

Western Australia

Fremantle

Fremantle looked strong in this one, taking a 88-54 win over GWS. Neil Erasmus (MID, $166,800, BE -30) had 15 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles and 3 clearances for 70 SCPoints, while Nathan O’Driscoll (DEF/MID, $167,700, BE -54) was very busy with 20 disposals, 5 marks, 6 tackles and 2 goals for 104 SCPoints. Lastly, Brandon Walker (DEF, $230,200, BE 27) had 31 SCPoints from 8 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles.

West Coast

West Coast put their first win on the board thanks to some very accurate kicking for goal, with a 14.3 87 against Collingwood who scored 10.14 74. Hugh Dixon (FWD/RUC, $164,400, BE -60) had a solid game with 16 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 5 hitouts and 3 clearances for 96 SCPoints. New South Wales

GWS

The Giants were in this one at halftime, but struggled after that, ending up with a 88-54 loss to Fremantle. Braydon Preuss (RUC, $204,700, BE -91) again scored well with 14 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 4 clearances and 31 hitouts for 102 SCPoints. Only issue now is he’s been offered a one match suspension for striking. He’s on the bubble this week, so if you traded him in just hope you have a Hugh Dixon or Jack Hayes (if named) to cover. If you were planning on trading him in maybe just wait another week as I would imagine he’d be straight back into the side when available.

Also featuring in this one, Jake Stein (DEF, $176,400, BE -12) had 6 disposals, 2 marks and 9 1%ers for 52 SCPoints, Jake Riccardi (MID/FWD, $225,100, BE 63) had 7 disposals, 1 mark and 7 hitouts for 45 SCPoints and James Peatling (DEF, $242,400, BE 76) scored 21 SCPoints from 7 disposals, 3 marks and 2 inside 50’s.

GWS made easy work of Coburg in the VFL, winning 106-64. Sydney

Sydney didn’t have as an easy time in this one as many expected, but still did enough to take the 4 points with a 86-75 win over North Melbourne. Ben Ronke (FWD, $186,200, BE 18) kicked 1.1 with 11 disposals and 4 marks for 73 SCPoints, Patrick McCartin (DEF/FWD, $242,500, BE 27) was more quiet this week with 10 disposals and 2 marks for 55 SCPoints and James Bell (FWD, $227,300, BE 39) had 8 disposals, 3 marks and 2 goals for 53 SCPoints.

Sydney managed a narrow win in the VFL, edging out Port Melbourne 72-65. Matty Roberts (MID, $117,300) had 32 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles and 8 clearances, Dylan Stephens (MID, $202,300) had 22 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles, Will Gould (DEF, $123,900) finished with 18 disposals and 7 marks and Marc Sheather (FWD, $123,900) booted 2 goals with 16 disposals and 7 tackles

Queensland

Brisbane

Brisbane had a slight lead headed into the final quarter, but couldn’t keep the Cats at bay, ending up with a 80-70 loss to Geelong. They did not feature any rookie priced options in this game.

Brisbane had a loss in the VFL also, going down to Geelong 90-83. Ely Smith (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 27 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles and 4 clearances, Darcy Wilmot (DEF, $139,800) had 22 disposals and 7 marks, Thoams Berry (FWD, $171,500) kicked a goal with 18 disposals, 2 marks and 5 clearances, Connor McFadyen (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 18 disposals, 4 clearances and a goal, Kai Lohmann (FWD, $121,800) kicked 2.2 with 15 disposals, 5 marks and 5 tackles and Blake Coleman (FWD, $123,9800) had 7 disposals and 2 goals.

Gold Coast

The Suns moved to within striking distance of the Top 8 after their 92-62 win over Carlton. Malcolm Rosas (FWD, $130,600, BE -21) had 12 disposals, 2 marks and 3 goals for 74 SCPoints, Alex Davies (MID, $228,200, BE 69) finished with 15 disposals, but 6 clangers to drop his score to 39 SCPoints and Rory Atkins (MID, $247,400, BE 70) had 12 disposals and 2 marks for 34 SCPoints.

The Suns struggled with their goal kicking accuracy in the VFL, ending with 7.19 and a 113-61 loss to Carlton. Mac Andrew (RUC, $189,300) had 23 disposals, 8 marks and 3 tackles, Elijah Hollands (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 22 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances and kicked 1.1, Jez McLennan (DEF, $123,900) had 18 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles and Hewago Paul Oea (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 15 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles and 2 clearances

Patrick Cripps is the big mover this week, Carlton have said it will be a short term injury, but that’s a best case scenario, so can understand a few people being nervous and moving him out.

Always enjoy your write up. Thanks BVC.

Excellent as usual mate, BVC as a Crows supporter, surely J.Hately must get a run soon ? I had him pegged to be as certain starter last year when he crossed over from GWS, your thoughts please mate ?

Daniel

Thoughts on bubble boy Erasmus? Was thinking of getting rid of Hinge and swapping O’Driscoll to my def.

The Fyfedom

I’m wondering a similar thing. As a dockers supporter I’d say O’Driscoll has better JS.
If Erasmus is named this week with Serong and Darcy to return I’ll bring him in. Fyfe still a month away at best so if he holds his spot this week he should be good for a month.
