Around the Grounds – Round 7

Published by Barron Von Crow on

It feels like with every passing week the 2021 Supercoach season just keeps getting messier and messier. There’s not much we can do about that however except ride the ups and downs and hope we can get through it as best as possible, which is what we’re here to help with! So lets go see what rookies we can consider bring in and out of our side for this week.

Not the greatest of days for the Pies, inaccuracy in front of goal cost them, going down to the Suns 79-55. Beau McCreery (FWD, $187,800, BE 8) didn’t find a lot of the ball, but had 9 tackles along with 10 disposals to score 57 SCPoints. He’s not setting the world on-fire, but it’s hard to be too picky with our rookies this year. Caleb Poulter (MID/FWD, $117,300, BE -4) made his AFL debut and had 15 disposals and 5 marks with 4 clangers for 52 SCPoints. A decent start for him. Finlay Macrae (MID/FWD, $137,600, BE 22) had 11 disposals and 2 marks with 4 clangers for 23 SCPoints. Mark Keane (DEF, $158,000, BE -13) is on the bubble this week, he had 13 disposals and 7 marks for 59 SCPoints. He’s averaging 53.5 SCPoints from his two games. Nathan Murphy (DEF, $123,900, BE -28) is also on the bubble this week, he had 15 disposals and 7 marks for his 55 SCPoints. Hard to differentiate between the two here, although one area Keane has the advantage is minutes on the ground, with Keane having 122 and 102 minutes on field for his two games, compared to 98 and 85 for Murphy, so that might just mean there’s more chance for Keane to get the ball more compared to Murphy. There’s also the possibility that if Keane gets lower minutes for a game he’ll also score less than Murphy, so you gotta take the good with the bad there. Just trade in Martin Frederick, it’s easier.

In Round 3 of the VFL season the Magpies defeated the Gold Coast Suns 65-62. Tom Wilson (FWD, $123,900) had 30 disposals, 8 marks, 2 tackles and a goal, Oliver Henry (FWD, $135,300) kicked 2.2 with 18 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles and Reef McInnes (MID, $117,300) had 20 disposals, 4 marks, 11 tackles and a goal.

Back in the winners circle for the Blues after their 123-107 win against Essendon on Sunday afternoon. Matthew Owies (FWD, $123,900, BE -16) made his 2021 debut and played just his 2nd AFL game of his career. He had 6 disposals, 4 marks and 3 goals for 67 SCPoints. Nice start, but as we’ve seen with a few small forwards, if the goals ain’t there then the scores won’t be either. One to watch though. Luke Parks (DEF, $133,600, BE -1) returned to the side and had 9 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 4 rebound 50’s for 58 SCPoints. Liam Stocker (DEF, $186,500, BE 26) had 10 disposals, 2 marks and 6 tackles for his 56 SCPoints and Paddy Dow (MID/FWD, $192,200, BE 58) only managed 6 disposals and 4 clearances for 16 SCPoints before he was subbed out with an eye injury with only 14% ToG.

It was a bit easier for the Blues in the VFL, defeating Essendon 101-52. Lochie O’Brien (MID, $180,500) had 18 disposals, 6 marks and a goal and Josh Honey (MID/FWD, $123,900) kicked 2.1 with 10 disposals, 4 marks and 4 tackles.

A close game for the majority of it, but the Bombers fell just short against the Blues, losing 123-107. Archie Perkins (MID/FWD, $242,500, BE 1) had a great game, he finished with 18 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 12 score involvements for 94 SCPoints. Harrison Jones (FWD, $191,800, BE 1) was also good with 10 disposals, 8 marks, and 3 goals for 79 SCPoints. Nick Bryan (RUC, $123,900, BE 0) made his AFL debut and had 12 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 4 clearances and 19 hitouts for 51 SCPoints and Nikolas Cox (DEF/FWD, $287,000, BE 62) had 14 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles for 49 SCPoints. He’s had a few good games this season, but his last 3 he’s averaged just 49.3 SCPoints, so is currently projecting for a price loss this week. Times are tough though, so you may have bigger priorities elsewhere so he’s not an immediate must trade.

Over in the VFL it was a slightly worse loss for the Bombers, going down 101-55 to Carlton. Ned Cahill (FWD, $161,200) had 23 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles and Alec Waterman (FWD, $148,400) kicked 1.1 with 11 disposals and 3 marks.

A contraversial game and one that saw the lead go back and forth a few times, but it ended with a 90-88 loss for Geelong against Sydney. Jordan Clark (DEF/MID, $275,000, BE 79) returned to the side and had 18 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles for 72 SCPoints and Zach Guthrie (DEF/MID, $192,100, BE 32) finished with 6 disposals and 2 marks for 37 SCPoints from 38% ToG.

It was a better result for Geelong in their VFL matchup with Sydney, winning 64-60. Max Holmes (MID/FWD, $121,800) had 26 disposals and 4 marks and Stefan Okunbor (DEF, $123,900) finished with 21 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles

The Hawks were blown out 5 goals to nil in the first quarter and never really recovered from that, losing to St Kilda 128-59. Jacob Koschitzke (DEF, $250,200, BE -21) had a solid game with 11 disposals, 3 marks and 2 goals for 66 SCPoints. Oliver Hanrahan (FWD, $241,600, BE 64) had 14 disposals, 2 marks and a goal for 47 SCPoints and Emerson Jeka (FWD, $123,900, BE 25) made his AFL debut and had 2 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles for 26 SCPoints. Probably wasn’t the best type of game for him to make an impact, but he’s got another week before he’s on the bubble yet.

The Box Hill Hawks managed to reverse the result in the VFL, defeating Sandringham 128-98. Conor Nash (FWD, $193,400) had 20 disposals, 9 marks and 2 tackles, Tyler Brockman (MID/FWD, $172,700) kicked 2.2 with 16 disposals and 7 marks and Ned Reeves (RUC, $123,900) finished with 14 disposals, 2 marks and 23 hitouts.

Now the only side without a loss for 2021, the Demons defeated North Melbourne 103-73. James Jordon (MID, $287,800, BE -1) had 20 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles and a goal for 91 SCPoints. He’s been hot the last 3 weeks with a 3 round average of 83.0 SCPoints.

It was a big win for the Casey Demons in their VFL match, defeating North Melbourne 131-24. Jake Bowey (MID/FWD, $117,300) had 23 disposals, 6 marks and 3 tackles.

North Melbourne

They gave the Dees a run for their money for most of the game, but as has happened a few times this season they just ran out of puff in the final quarter, going down to Melbourne 103-73. Tom Powell (MID, $357,700, BE 20) again led the way for the Roos young players with 23 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles and 97 SCPoints. He’s now running with a 3 round average of 89.0 SCPoints and a 5 round average of 83.4 SCPoints. Great results so far for him. Tom Campbell (RUC/FWD, $193,100, BE -8) had a better than average game with 11 disposals, 4 marks, 8 hitouts and 2 goals for 73 SCPoints while Atu Bosenavulagi (FWD, $214,400, BE 7) finished with 15 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles for 59 SCPoints. Will Phillips (MID, $208,700, BE 34) had 16 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles for 53 SCPoints. Charlie Lazzaro (MID, $159,100, BE 23) had 15 disposals and 3 marks, but 4 clangers for 43 SCPoints and Connor Menadue (DEF, $230,500, BE 13) had 8 disposals and 3 marks from 57% ToG for 32 SCPoints.

It was an uglier result for the Roos in the VFL, losing to the Casey Demons 131-24. Dom Tyson (MID, $243,900) had 27 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles.

A great effort for the Tigers, giving the Bulldogs their first loss for the year and showing why you can’t count ’em out yet, with a 77-55 win. Riley Collier-Dawkins (MID, $123,900, BE -25) made his AFL debut and looked solid with 14 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles and 5 clearances for 76 SCPoints. He’s still got one more game before he’s on the bubble, but hard to argue with first up results. Rhyan Mansell (DEF, $158,300, BE 9) had 9 disposals and 5 marks for his 46 SCPoints and Patrick Niash (MID, $180,500, BE 69) came on late as the injury sub, playing just 5% ToG for 1 disposal, 1 tackle and 5 SCPoints. That’s sent his BE skyrocketing, so he may be an avoid for now if he’s selected again until that 5 rolls out of his average.

Richmond had a big loss in their VFL match against Werribee, going down 124-43. Patrick Naish (MID, $180,500) had 18 disposals and 6 marks, Will Martyn (MID, $123,900) had 17 disposals, 6 marks and 4 tackles and Noah Cumberland (MID/FWD, $123,900) booted 2 goals with 8 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles.

St Kilda

Back to the winners cicrle for the Saints with a 128-59 thrashing of Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Byrnes (MID, $123,900, BE -1) made his 2021 debut and played his second ever AFL game and had 18 disposals and 9 marks for 52 SCPoints. Not too bad for a start, but 16 uncontested possessions in Supercoach may not get you too far. Darragh Joyce (DEF, $177,300, BE 31) is on the bubble this week and had 12 disposals and 5 marks for 40 SCPoints. Probably not one I’d consider at this stage.

Sandringham remain winless in the VFL after losing 128-98 to the Box Hill Hawks. Leo Connolly (DEF/MID, $123,900) had 30 disposals and 9 marks, Thomas Highmore (DEF, $117,300) also had 30 disposals with 14 marks and Oscar Clavarino (DEF, $123,900) had 16 disposals, 7 marks, 2 tackles and a goal.

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs suffered their first lost of 2021, going down to Richmond 77-55 on Friday Night Football. Anthony Scott (MID/FWD, $232,500, BE 10) continues to be slightly underrated as a SC pick. He had 7 disposals, 1 goal, 5 tackles, 3 clearances and 63 SCPoints. He’s running on a 3-round average of 63.3 SCPoints and should make a bit more cash from here if he can keep that up. Josh Schache (FWD, $214,600, BE 43) made his 2021 AFL debut and had 6 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles and a goal for 45 SCPoints. Not one that looks worthy of a selection at this stage.

Footscray were innaccurate in front of goal, but it didn’t matter in their VFL matchup against the Northern Bullants. They kicked 12.18 and won 90-47. Louis Butler (DEF, $191,800) had 25 disposals, and 5 marks, Cody Weightman (FWD, $173,700) had 19 disposals and 11 marks and kicked 2.4 and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (FWD, $207,300) had 10 disposals, 4 marks and kicked 1.1

South Australia

In a game that is still giving me nightmares, the Crows were easily handled by the Giants, losing 106-39. Jordon Butts (DEF, $298,700, BE 32) had a solid game down back with 16 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles for 88 SCPoints. Nicholas Murray (DEF, $102,400, BE -39) was swapped from the backline to the forward line for part of the game, he had 8 disposals, 6 marks and kicked 1.1 for 59 SCPoints. He’s on the bubble this week, but has shown he’s not a guaranteed 22 guy at this stage. Riley Thilthorpe (RUC/FWD, $202,800, BE -25) had a bit tougher go of it this week with 10 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles and 4 hitouts for 55 SCPoints. Ned McHenry (FWD, $223,700, BE 50) had 13 disposals, 4 marks and 5 tackles for 46 SCPoints. Sam Berry (MID, $212,300, BE 53) returned, but only had 11 disposals, 3 marks and 4 tackles for his 43 SCPoints. His BE is 53 which is achievable for him but he’s running on a 3 round average of 41.7 SCPoints. Finally, James Rowe (FWD, $234,000, BE 77) had 36 SCPoints from 12 disposals and 3 marks. Again showing that unless he hits the scoreboard a few times he probably can’t put up a useable score at this stage.

The Crows almost got the win in the SANFL, but a last second goal to Ash Johnson (Shane McAdam’s brother) gave Sturt a 84-83 win. Josh Worrell (DEF/FWD, $123,900) led the Crows for disposals with 22, along with 6 marks, Chayce Jones (MID, $236,800) was moved to half-back and had 20 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles and Ronin O’Connor (MID, $123,900) had 20 disposals, 5 marks, 10 tackles, 8 clearances and kicked 1.1.

Port Adelaide

The Power just never really got going in their game against Brisbane, losing 93-44. Miles Bergman (FWD, $225,500, BE 7) had 19 disposals, 7 marks and kicked 1.1 for his 76 SCPoints and Martin Frederick (DEF, $123,900, BE -88) had 16 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles and 2 rebound 50’s for 74 SCPoints. He’s on the bubble this week and with a 2 round average of 81.0 SCPoints he’ll be a popular pick for sure, with trades for Errol Gulden, Heath Chapman and James Rowe leading the way so far.

Over in the SANFL, the Magpies had a good win against the reigning premiers Woodville West-Torrens, winning 107-47. Taj Schofield (MID, $102,400) had 19 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 3 clearances and Dylan Williams (MID/FWD, $123,900) had 19 disposals, 8 marks and 3 goals

Western Australia

The Western Derby wasn’t kind to the Dockers, losing to West Coast 132-73. Michael Frederick (FWD, $259,100, BE 53) had 7 disposals, 5 marks and a goal for 47 SCPoints while Heath Chapman (DEF, $250,500, BE 85) had 11 disposals and 3 marks with 3 clangers for 28 SCPoints. Unfortunately he suffered a shoulder injury which requires reconstruction surgery and is a must-trade out this week.

Fremantle managed to win the Western Derby over in the WAFL, with the Peel Thunder handing out a 156-77 defeat. Stefan Giro (MID, $170,000) had 33 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles and kicked a goal, Joel Western (MID, $117,300) had 26 disposals, 10 marks and a goal and Josh Treacy (RUC/FWD, $108,000) booted 5.1 with 8 marks, 5 tackles and 12 hitouts.

West Coast

The Eagles didn’t have much problem taking out the Dockers on Sunday, winning 132-73. Jamaine Jones (FWD, $213,500, BE -38) was great with 21 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 2 goals for 119 SCPoints. Zac Langdon (FWD, $181,600, BE 8) had 16 disposals, 4 marks and kicked 2.2 for 66 SCPoints while Harry Edwards (DEF, $123,900, BE 61 SCPoints) had 14 disposals and 8 marks for 61 SCPoints. Nathan Vardy (RUC, $218,600, BE 10) scored 54 SCPoints from 5 disposals, 12 hitouts and a goal and Jack Petruccelle (FWD, $247,000, BE 20) had 9 disposals, 2 marks and a goal for 44 SCPoints.

Over in the WAFL, the Eagles remain at the bottom of the ladder without a win after a 156-77 loss to the Peel Thunder. Xavier O’Neill (MID/FWD, $223,00) finished with 28 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles, Luke Edwards (MID, $117,300) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and a goal and Callum Jamieson (RUC, $123,900) had 16 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 6 hitouts and 2 goals.

New South Wales

The Giants made easy work of the Crows at Adelaide Oval, winning 106-39. Connor Idun (DEF, $298,700, BE 29) finished with 16 disposals, 8 marks and 2 tackles for 76 SCPoints. Xavier O’Halloran (MID, $247,700, BE 37) had 16 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 2 goal assists and a goal of his own for his 76 SCPoints. Sam Reid (DEF, $226,000, BE 68) had just 6 disposals but 2 goals for 52 SCPoints and Matt Buntine (DEF/FWD, $214,100, BE 78) ad 6 disposals and 3 clangers for 20 SCPoints.

The Giants had their first win in the VFL, defeating the Southport Sharks 94-64. Jacob Wehr (DEF, $117,300) had 27 disposals, 2 marks and a tackle, Tanner Bruhn (MID, $155,700) had 23 disposals, 5 marks, 6 tackles and a goal and Matt Flynn (RUC, $273,000) had 12 disposals, 5 marks, 17 hitouts and a goal.

A goal from Tom Papley in the final 2 minutes got the Swans over the line in this one, defeating Geelong 90-88. Chad Warner (FWD, $329,800, BE 63) had 14 disposals, 2 marks, 6 tackles and a goal for his 61 SCPoints and Errol Gulden (MID, $297,800, BE 86) had 7 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles and kicked 1.2 54 SCPoints.

Over in the VFL, Sydney staged another comeback through the 3rd and 4th quarters to take the lead, but could only hold it for a moment, eventually losing to Geelong 64-60. Braeden Campbell (MID/FWD, $235,800) had 25 disposals, 6 marks, 7 tackles and 2 behinds, Joel Amartey (RUC/FWD, $195,600) had 19 disposals, 3 marks, 8 tackles, 7 hitouts and 2 goals and Will Gould (DEF, $123,900) finished with 18 disposals and 3 marks.

The Lions continue to turn their season around after a slow start, this time defeating Port Adelaide 93-44. Joe Daniher (FWD, $386,200, BE 39) continued his good run with 17 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals for 109 SCPoints. Deven Robertson (MID/FWD, $255,000, BE -14) had 69 SCPoints with 14 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles with 3 clangers. Jaxon Prior (DEF, $190,500, BE 2) had 13 disposals, 5 marks, and a goal for 62 SCPoints and James Madden (DEF/FWD, $123,900, BE 4) made his AFL debut and had 11 disposals and 2 tackles with 3 clangers and 4 rebound 50’s for 47 SCPoints.

It was Lions vs Lions in the VFL with Brisbane facing Coburg, a match Brisbane lost 73-55. Carter Michael (MID, $102,400) had 26 disposals, 5 marks and 6 tackles, Thomas Berry (FWD, $191,900) had 25 disposals, 4 marks and 8 tackles and Connor McFadyen (FWD, $123,900) had 16 disposals, 4 marks and 2 goals.

Gold Coast

The Suns continue to remain on the cusp of the top 8 after their 79-55 win over Collingwood. Chris Burgess (DEF, $247,600, BE 39) had 11 disposals, 4 marks, 7 hitouts, 3 clearances and a goal for 51 SCPoints. Sam Flanders (FWD, $199,900, BE 8) finished with 11 disposals, 6 marks and 5 tackles for 49 SCPoints and Jy Farrar (FWD, $217,400, BE 28) had 13 disposals and 3 marks for 43 SCPoints. His ownership % has risen from 0.1% to 4.2%, so a few jumped on him, but the majority stayed away so won’t be too bothered by that score.

The Suns fell just short in their VFL match against Collingwood, losing 65-62. Jeremy Sharp (MID, $141,800) had 21 disposals, 4 marks and a goal, Rory Atkins (MID, $244,200) had 20 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals while Alex Davies (MID, $102,400) had 20 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal.

Thanks BCV, I look forward to this each week , there are some rookies pushing for selection eg Gould,Wehr ,O’Connor, Worrell & Amartey are the ones who have been standouts recently

Ahh the ole Gould Myth, I’m not sure Gould even exists, maybe he’s just a beanbag with a boofhead wig on it. 😉

Last edited 1 year ago by Russty_

Gould is a mystery like the Loch ness Monster, Big Foot etc.

He’s Dicky Knees little brother

Does Highmore exist Gat Had him all year waiting waiting waiting Bet Kent gets a game first

I think he still exists, I’m holding and hoping like everyone else for now

How do we feel about Jamaine Jones? If he keeps getting runs through the midfield vs hawks and crows, he could score okay. There aren’t much foward rookies available this week. Could make some short term cash?

I’d be afraid of him repeating his round 3 to 5 scores.

Only tonned up once in his career, happy to pass

Great stuff Barron cheers mate…think I might have to bring in Frederick this week as I have two Freo defenders out! P.S, what the hell does Tommy Highmore have to do to get another game?…It ain’t like the Saints are setting the world on fire this season…still a bottom 8 side, they should be getting games into the young-uns.

I’m really hoping he comes in next week as I already have my plans this week. I’m going Frederick and perhaps Titch instead of May

Awesome work Barron. Any news on Harry Sharp?

I’m asking the same thing!

Cheers mate

Note: It has been reported all teams will be announced on Thursday nights beginning in Round 9

Wooooooooooooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s great news and i bet clubs will only name squads.. if that’s the case at least we’ll know who’s named in the squad
