Around the Grounds – Round 6

Published by Barron Von Crow on

Hello everyone and welcome to Around the Grounds for another week. We’re certainly running into a tough time out there in Supercoach and football in general lately. Players are dropping like flies and teams (myself included) are being forced to use trades to move out injured premos rather than concentrating on the down and up trading of rookie picks. Speaking of rookie picks, it’s looking equally as bleak out there on that front, with a rapidly declining number of quality options to go to, which may severely impact our ability to upgrade our teams later in the year. Still, we can only play the hands we’re dealt, so what we need to do now is see if we can find a few quality options coming through for us. And onto the show!

Victoria

Collingwood

The Pies remain stuck on the bottom two of the ladder after a 109-85 loss to Essendon on the Anzac Day clash.  Finlay Macrae (MID/FWD, $126,300, BE -4) had 9 disposals for 37 SCPoints and Beau McCreery (FWD, $158,000, BE -12) managed 6 disposals, 3 tackles and 3 goals for 47 SCPoints, Nathan Murphy (DEF, $123,900, BE 3) had 47 SCPoints from 14 disposals and 5 marks. Will Kelly (FWD, $135,400, BE 29) played his first game of 2021 and his second in his career and had 6 disposals and 2 marks for 26 SCPoints. Jay Rantall (MID, $123,900, BE 25) made his AFL debut and had 26 SCPoints from 8 disposals and 2 marks and Trey Ruscoe (FWD, $179,600, BE 59) had 4 disposals and a goal for 22 SCPoints. Lots of rookie options there, none really standing out though. McReery has played 3 games, but still has a gettable price and is the best of the Pies bunch averaging 53.7 SCPoints. Ruscoe has had his first price rise too, but is only averaging 20.0 SCPoints and Macrae is on the bubble this week with an average of 39.0 SCPoints. He’s already owned by 18.1% of teams, he has MID/FWD eligibility so will get some ownership because of that too.

In the VFL matchup the Pies also lost to the Bombers, going down 85-50. Caleb Poulter (DEF/FWD, $117,300) led the way for the Pies with 27 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles, Reef McInnes (MID, $117,300) had 17 disposals and 4 tackles and Oliver Henry (FWD, $135,300) kicked 2 goals with 9 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles.

Carlton

The Blues tried, but just couldn’t pin back the lead against Brisbane, losing 103-85. Liam Stocker (DEF, $186,500, BE 46) returned to the side after a long absence of AFL games, but had just 10 disposals and 2 tackles with 4 clangers for 29 SCPoints.

Carlton had a big win in the VFL, defeating Brisbane 154 to 85. Paddy Dow (FWD/MID, $210,500) had 20 disposals and 6 tackles and Josh Honey (MID/FWD, $123,900) kicked 2.2 with 16 disposals, 5 marks and 3 tackles

Essendon

A great win for the Bombers in the Anzac Day clash, defeating Collingwood 109-85. Nikolas Cox (DEF/FWD, $300,900, BE 78) had 15 disposals and 8 marks for 60 SCPoints. He’s starting to get to the point where he’s peaked in price based on his current scores, but may hold for a bit longer. Archie Perkins (MID/FWD, $209,400, BE 17) had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 4 tackles for 50 SCPoints and Harrison Jones (FWD, $174,800, BE 39) had 6 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles for 34 SCPoints.

The Bombers also got the win in the VFL, defeating Collingwood 85-50. Alec Waterman (FWD, $148,400) kicked 2.4 with 17 disposals, 3 marks and 5 tackles and Ned Cahill (FWD, $161,200) had 21 disposals, 5 marks and 6 tackles.

Geelong

An absolute demolition job after quarter time by the Cats, booting 19 goals to 2 in the next 3 quarters to take a 136-39 win over West Coast. Jordan Clark (DEF/MID, $283,400, BE 89) was the medical sub and played 17% ToG for 5 disposals and 3 marks for 13 SCPoints. Not a great result if you kept him as it puts his BE at 89, with his highest score this year being 80 in Round 1, so one who will definitely lose money if he plays this week.

In the VFL the Geelong side had the bye.

Hawthorn

A great second half was the clincher for the Hawks keeping the Crows goalless in the 4th quarter, they had a 102-99 win in Tasmania. Jacob Koschitzke (DEF, $200,700, BE -48) was huge, winning the Rising Star nomination with 14 disposals, 9 marks and kicking 5.3 for 104 SCPoints. A great result for those owners who kept him in their sides. Oliver Hanrahan (FWD, $238,100, BE 37) had 15 disposals, 2 marks and 2 clangers for 33 SCPoints and Finn Maginness (MID, $195,600, BE 60) had 3 disposals and 2 clearances for 19 SCPoints from 35% ToG.

The Box Hill Hawks took on the Northern Bullants in the VFL and won 112-56. Emerson Jeka (FWD, $123,900) kicked 5.2 with 20 disposals and 9 marks, Keegan Brooksby (RUC/FWD, $206,900) had 13 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 24 hitouts and kicked 2.2 and Ned Reeves (RUC, $123,900) had 54 hitouts with 16 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and a goal.

Melbourne

Melbourne continued their dominance of the 2021 season with a 82-48 win over Richmond on Saturday night. James Jordon (MID, $241,600, BE -16) continues to score well, he had 18 disposals and 5 tackles for 82 SCPoints.

The Casey Demons didn’t have much issue defeating Richmond in their VFL encounter either, winning 96-37. Jake Bowey (MID/FWD, $117,300) led the Demons in disposals with 26, along with 5 marks, Neville Jetta (DEF, $198,600) had 23 disposals with 6 marks and Toby Bedford (FWD, $137,000) had 19 disposals, 5 marks, 6 tackles and 3 behinds.

North Melbourne

Like many of their games this year, they held on early, but eventually were run over, losing to Fremantle 99-48. Tom Powell (MID, $325,700, BE 22) had a great game with 25 disposals, 8 marks, 3 tackles and 2 clearances for 96 SCPoints. He’s now running on a 3 round average of 90.3 SCPoints and is becoming an invaluable piece of sides midfields. Connor Menadue (DEF, $201,500, BE -35) returned to the side and had 18 disposals, 7 marks and 3 tackles for 92 SCPoints. Atu Bosenavulagi (FWD, $175,500, BE -31) held his solid form with 15 disposals and 9 marks for 62 SCPoints. He’s on the bubble this week with a 2 game average of 67.0 SCPoints, a bit expensive, but one of the better forward downgrade options left available. Tom Campbell (RUC/FWD, $164,000, BE 6) had 10 disposals, 5 marks, 15 hitouts and a goal for 50 SCPoints and Will Phillips (MID, $204,700, BE 42) scored 37 SCPoints from 9 disposals and a goal.

North took on the Frankston Dolphins in their Round 2 VFL match, losing 104-39. Will Walker (MID/FWD, $244,500) had 23 disposals, 11 marks and a goal.

Richmond

Richmond just never got going after the first quarter, kicking 3.9 for the rest of the game and losing to Melbourne 82-48. Rhyan Mansell (DEF, $134,100, BE -10) had 10 disposals and 3 tackles with 3 clangers for 39 SCPoints.

Not much more luck for the Tigers in the VFL either, losing to the Casey Demons 96-37. Patrick Naish (MID, $180,500) led the Tigers with 28 disposals and 5 marks, Callum Coleman-Jones (RUC/FWD, $161,200) had 18 disposals, 9 marks, 3 tackles, 29 hitouts and a goal and Riley Collier-Dawkins (MID, $123,900) was quieter in this game with 13 disposals and 4 tackles.

St Kilda

Not a good result for the Saints in Adelaide, losing to Port Adelaide 93-39. Darragh Joyce (DEF, $177,300, BE 36) returned to the side and had 9 disposals and 3 marks for 35 SCPoints.

In the VFL the Sandringham Zebras lost to Port Melbourne 92-66. Ryan Byrnes (MID, $123,900) had 23 disposals, 5 marks and 3 tackles, Leo Connolly (DEF/MID, $123,900) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles and Paul Hunter (RUC, $134,300) had 13 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 26 hitouts and kicked 2 goals.

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs put the pedal to the metal in the final quarter, booting 9 of their 15 goals of the game to take a 104-65 win over the Giants. Anthony Scott (MID/FWD, $201,800, BE -8) had 15 disposals and 3 tackles for his 66 SCPoints, while Lachlan McNeil (MID, $195,400, BE 20) was an early sub activation and had 9 disposals, 3 marks and 2 goals for his 50 SCPoints.

The Bulldogs took on GWS in the VFL as well, with Footscray winning 135-63. Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (FWD, $207,300) kicked 5.2 with 9 disposals and 3 marks, Jordon Sweet (RUC, $123,900) had 13 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 37 hitouts and kicked 2.1, Louis Butler (DEF, $191,800) booted 2.1 with 20 disposals, 6 marks and 3 tackles, Ben Cavarra (FWD, $194,900) had 20 disposals, 7 marks and kicked 1.1 and Will Hayes (MID, $249,300) had 28 disposals and 4 marks.

South Australia

Adelaide

The Crows kicked 15 goals straight, but couldn’t score in the final quarter which proved their undoing, losing to Hawthorn 102-99. Riley Thilthorpe (RUC/FWD, $202,800, BE -10) was terrific on debut, he had 16 disposals, 5 marks and kicked 5 goals for 91 SCPoints. Can’t expect that every week, but a good place to start from. Jordon Butts (DEF, $269,500, BE 20) had 11 disposals and 5 marks for 58 SCPoints. Will Hamill (DEF, $237,400, BE 41) left with an ankle injury and had 16 disposals and 2 rebound 50’s for 51 SCPoints. Ned McHenry (FWD, $222,200, BE 41) had 7 disposals, 1 goal and 4 clangers (all free’s against) for 37 SCPoints and James Rowe (FWD, $232,600, BE 31) was held goalless and had 8 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles for 27 SCPoints. As is the case with small forwards, no goals usually limits them severely in what they can score.

Adelaide had their 2nd win of their SANFL season with a 103-80 defeat of Central Districts. Billy Frampton (FWD, $207,200) did most of the damage, kicking 7.3 with 19 disposals and 12 marks. Tariek Newchuch (MID/FWD, $102,400) added 2 goals with 8 disposals, Josh Worrell (DEF/FWD, $123,900) had 21 disposals and 6 marks, Ronin O’Connor (MID, $123,900) had 18 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles and 6 clearances and Fisher McAsey (DEF/FWD, $199,300) had 17 disposals and 9 marks.

Port Adelaide

Port were never really challenged in their match against St. Kilda, winning 93-39. Martin Frederick (DEF, $123,900, BE -38) made his AFL debut and was fantastic with 23 disposals and 6 marks for 88 SCPoints. Hopefully he can repeat that sort of form going forward to give us another DEF option to look at. Miles Bergman (FWD, $192,900, BE 1) had 51 SCPoints from 16 disposals, 6 marks and 2 tackles.

It was a close contest for most of the game in Ports SANFL match, but the Glenelg Tigers were just too much in the end, defeating Port Adelaide 83-73. Taj Schofield (MID, $102,400) had 21 disposals, 8 tackles, 4 clearances and a goal and Dylan Williams (MID/FWD, $123,900) kicked 2 goals with 13 disposals, 2 tackles and 2 clearances.

Western Australia

Fremantle

The Dockers didn’t have many issues with North Melbourne in the end, winning 99-48. Michael Frederick (FWD, $249,900, BE 24) had 11 disposals, 5 marks, 4 tackles and 2 behinds for 54 SCPoints, Heath Chapman (DEF, $269,200, BE 68) finished with 11 disposals, 7 marks and 5 rebound 50’s for 36 SCPoints and Josh Treacy (RUC/FWD, $108,000, BE 26) had 5 disposals, 2 marks and 2 tackles for just 22 SCPoints.

Due to the state lockdown in Western Australia Round 4 of the WAFL season did not take place.

West Coast

The Eagles had the lead at the end of the first quarter in their match against Geelong and went to sleep after that, losing 136-39. Nathan Vardy (RUC, $208,000, BE 28) had 4 disposals with 2 marks, 3 tackles, 18 hitouts and a goal for 66 SCPoints. A good return by his standards this year. Xavier O’Neill (FWD/MID, $223,000, BE 54) had 14 disposals, 2 marks and 4 clangers for 49 SCPoints, Jamaine Jones (FWD, $179,600, BE 41) had 6 disposals and 5 marks for 46 SCPoints and Zac Langdon (FWD, $165,100, BE 27) finished with 34 SCPoints from 9 disposals, 4 marks and 4 clangers.

Due to the state lockdown in Western Australia Round 4 of the WAFL season did not take place.

New South Wales

GWS

The Giants were in it for 3 quarters, but were blown away in the final term, losing to the Western Bulldogs 104-65. Connor Idun (DEF, $288,000, BE 50) had 14 disposals, 6 marks and 5 tackles for his 73 SCPoints, while Matt Flynn (RUC, $273,000, BE 2) had 10 disposals, 5 marks and 22 hitouts for 70 SCPoints. Xavier O’Halloran (MID, $232,000, BE 39) had 35 SCPoints from 15 disposals and 4 marks, Connor Stone (FWD, $162,000, BE 2) had 3 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles and a goal for 34 SCPoints and Tanner Bruhn (MID, $155,700, BE 52) had 5 disposals, 2 marks and 2 inside 50’s for 8 SCPoints from 63% ToG.

The Giants had a 135-63 loss to Footscray in their Round 2 VFL matchup last week. Nick Shipley (MID, $123,900) had 19 disposals and 8 tackles, Zach Sproule (FWD, $123,900) had 17 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles and kicked 1.1, Jacob Wehr (DEF, $117,300) had 17 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles and Kieran Briggs (DEF/FWD, $123,900) had 15 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 31 hitouts and a goal.

Sydney

The Swans moved to 4-2 for the year after losing to the Suns 100-60. Errol Gulden (MID, $309,500, BE 78) has slowed down a bit from his hot start, he had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 3 clangers for 39 SCPoints. His BE is 78 this week and he’s running on a 3-round average of 57.3 SCPoints, so he may be getting towards the end of his usefulness. Chad Warner (FWD, $337,300, BE 76) had 23 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 5 clangers and a goal for his 73 SCPoints. He’s also got a high BE of 76, but has a 3-round average of 69.7 SCPoints, so is at this stage more likely to get close to scoring well and breaking even, so he’ll keep slightly longer. Braeden Campbell (MID/FWD, $235,800, BE 65) had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 3 tackles for 35 SCPoints. Like Gulden he’s slowed down a bit, with a 3-round average of 41.7 SCPoints. Not a total surprise to see young players hit the wall after a stretch of games like this. Finally, Kaiden Brand (DEF, $245,000, BE 33) had 65 SCPoints from 14 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles.

A repeat of the AFL results, with Sydney losing to the Gold Coast Suns 95-81. Malachy Carruthers (DEF, $102,400) had 19 disposals and 9 marks, Will Gould (DEF, $123,900) had 17 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles and kicked 1.1, Joel Amartey (RUC/FWD, $195,600) kicked 3.1 with 11 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 3 hitouts and Logan McDonald (FWD, $251,300) only managed 5 disposals with a goal.

Queensland

Brisbane

The Lions moved back into the top 8 after their 103-85 win over Carlton on Saturday afternoon. Deven Robertson (MID/FWD, $225,800, BE 1) had a quality game with 18 disposals, 6 tackles and 2 goals for 97 SCPoints. Joe Daniher (FWD, $337,800, BE -4) was solid again with 15 disposals, 7 marks, 5 hitouts and a goal for 82 SCPoints. Jaxon Prior (DEF, $152,600, BE -25) had his first price rise and had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles for 50 SCPoints and Thomas Berry (FWD, $191,900, BE 81) had 8 disposals, 2 tackles and 3 clangers for 22 SCPoints.

In the VFL Brisbane had a 154-85 loss to Carlton in their Round 2 match. Tom Fullarton (RUC/FWD) had a BOG for the Lions performance with 34 disposals, 3 marks, 18 hitouts with 1 goal. Connor Ballenden (FWD, $146,100) had 21 disposals and 14 marks and Harry Sharp (DEF/MID, $117,300) had 17 disposals and 4 marks.

Gold Coast

The Suns had a quality win against a team that has started 2021 hot, defeating Sydney 100-60. Sam Flanders (FWD, $192,300, BE 30) had 17 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and 3 clearances for 62 SCPoints. He’s on the bubble this week, but has a slightly higher starting price due to playing 5 games last year. Jy Farrar (FWD, $184,300, BE -34) finished with 14 disposals, 7 marks and 4 tackles for 59 SCPoints, he’s in the same boat as Flanders, on the bubble this week with a higher than normal starting price due to games played last year. Finally, Chris Burgess (DEF, $244,400, BE 42) had 11 disposals, 5 marks and 7 hitouts for 58 SCPoints.

It was two for two on the week for the Suns, in the VFL they defeated Sydney 95-81. 🖕 Dusty Martin playing the downhill skier hole couldn’t even crack a ton since I brought him in (85, 88, 92, 39, BE 153) and lost almost 60k. Injured too boot, 1 week or 2? Should he be traded? Rowe at F6.

Rule – don’t bring a rookie in after only 1 game!
Martin Frederick – $123,900 still looks like the best option though, a risk but the others are very uninspiring.

David C

Mr Jones has already burnt people. Does Fred stay in when Jones comes back in a couple of weeks?

DEESNUTSRBIG

Tough competition for spots at Port so really depends how he plays.
Injury List Updated: Tuesday, April 27 ( Lachie Jones Ankle 3-4 weeks) (Zak Butters Ankle 3-4 weeks)
Defender Lachie Jones had successful surgery during the week after a syndesmosis injury, while Zak Butters is continuing his rehabilitation two weeks on from surgery for a similar injury.

And half-back/wingman Riley Bonner returns to the selection table – most probably for SANFL action – after recuperating from a serious hamstring injury that put him on the sidelines after the season-opener against North Melbourne at the Docklands on March 21.
Powell-Pepper has made his case to play against Brisbane this weekend after leading the team statistical count in the SANFL with 34 touches and 1.1 in Port Adelaide’s 10-point loss to Glenelg on Saturday night.

Thanks for the wrap up BVC, much appreciated, not a good week for rookie trade ins which is ok with the injury crisis happening this week.
Good luck this round good sir!

I’m likely to take Jesse Hogan $302k on his (confirmed) GWS debut vs Adelaide. Looks fit & in-form & if Kosi can kick 5 against Adelaide, Hogan might kick 7.

My contacts got one right Brown to debut for melbourne at the expense of Nat Jones or Melksham
