PODCAST | Technically Correct Advice From Technically Correct People

Published by Patch on

Patch and Lekdog are good at advice. Well, technically. Sometimes reality doesn’t quite follow their predictions, but they come back each and every week and keep giving it a crack.

This week, they come back to have a crack and flicking Marc Pittonet while Lek finds some value in the middle and Patch finds some love in the backline.

What are you doing this week, community? How do you plan to Flick Pitt and Get Gawn?

Derek · 21/07/2020 at 22:12

Gawn is $777k

Is that too many k’s?

    Russty_ · 21/07/2020 at 22:49

Not when you're comparing Chalk – 32 to Cheese -185, not just Cheese either, the best French cheese that smells like old socks.
And the worst crumbly assed chalk that squeaks on the blackboard and makes everybody cringe.

    Pman · 21/07/2020 at 23:21

I'm breaking the bank to get Max in this week and $777K does seem excessive on paper however I look at how much it's costing me not to have him as far recent league losses are concerned and he's not going to get any cheaper anytime soon with a BE of 124 this week. Neale's 150+ games have dried up a bit and I need a set and forget reliable 145+ Captain option. Reckon it's now or never for Big Maxy…

    s c tragic · 22/07/2020 at 11:18

Looks like too many 7's to me.

    JEL · 22/07/2020 at 14:52

There are 4 players who have got more than 900 points so far this season, Neale and the 3 Gs. You probably want at least 2 if not 3 of them, so it depends on your finances and who you've got already.
Gawn is the standout of the 3 Gs, as he's played 1 less game, but is also 100k premium over the other 2 rucks.

    redherringfc · 22/07/2020 at 16:09

It is, but he’s had his bye, so there is some added merit to the trade.

If he plays every game then you’re getting 10% more from him than a non Melbourne or Essendon player, So just think of it as 700k.

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 16:54

I could easily keep Pittonet and get Petracca and Greenwood this week for Rozee and another spud but then I'm still stuck with Pittonet, 777 is ridiculous but the big bearded wonder is worth it, going up against another team who has him is a killer to your week, although English looks tempting lol

    Kdog · 22/07/2020 at 16:58

He's had his bye, is the top-averaging player, provides a captain option every week, and now that we have 4 extra trades we have more opportunity to recover the money by downgrading rookies. So for me he's a lock trade from Pittonet this week!

JohnDJ59 · 21/07/2020 at 22:23

Hi guys, I would like your expert opinion for this weeks trades, I didn't get Simpson and Rankine in last week, since I like to see how they go for two games, I think they are still both worth getting in, Rankine is a lock, it just means that I will have put on hold getting Bailey Smith in for a week.

    Russty_ · 21/07/2020 at 22:54

Hey John, I'd get Rankine and Smith, I passed on Simpson cause Duncan coming back this week and Narkle next week or the week after, not sure if Gazza going home to deal with his family situation changes Simpson's JS or not, but I'd want to be getting more keeper players in now to deal with these up coming byes…that being said, maybe don't listen to me this year because my season is a trainwreck lol.

      JohnDJ59 · 21/07/2020 at 23:22

Hey Russty getting Rankine and B.Smith was my original plan, then I saw how much Simpson could go up in the next three weeks, problem is Geelong play last and Bulldogs first this week, so I won't know if Simpson is playing before B.Smith plays. Might just be safer sticking with Rankine and B.Smith.

        Scouser · 22/07/2020 at 17:41

I reckon that's the right move John, going on your 2 week review stance also it still leaves you with Sam Mayes as a mid rookie'ish pick next week although does not offer the same value but would you care if he keeps pumping out tons?

        Lekdog · 23/07/2020 at 19:14

        Rankine and SMith my friend

Russty_ · 21/07/2020 at 23:02

Jeez I was just looking at these up coming fixtures and rounds end on a Sunday, then a Friday, then a Wednesday, then a Wednesday again…LOL, can't wait for that one !

    Pman · 21/07/2020 at 23:26

It's going to make trades, Emergency, C & VC option selections very difficult when games are played everyday of the week when a Round is spread over 7 days rather than the usual 3 or 4. Will be interesting to see if any changes or allowances will be made. SC is about to get a lot more challenging and frustrating I reckon…

    JohnDJ59 · 21/07/2020 at 23:27

I really hope they make it best 18 after this round, since it's going to be hard fielding a full team. Either that or give us 3 trades a week, or even both would be handy.

      Derek · 21/07/2020 at 23:46

I think the other game has 3 trades a week going forward

        JohnDJ59 · 22/07/2020 at 17:45

We ended up with what we hoped for Derek.

      Derek · 21/07/2020 at 23:48

t will surely be best 18 in the rounds with 4 teams having a bye.

However, rounds with only 2 teams having a bye I doubt it will be best 18. Similar to the round after the China game it was always best 22.

TelescopicCox · 22/07/2020 at 09:26

Fyfe set to miss this week. Is he a trade out considering he will play only 1 game in the next 3 (R10 bye)

Looking at Fyfe to Treloar

    MagicGnome97 · 22/07/2020 at 13:56

he was a trade out last week if you could imo, so definitely this week trade him out.

Holty01 · 22/07/2020 at 09:59

Well my trades are out the window this week. Was doing a double upgrade but after Pittonet’s performance and Goldy this week, he has to go. Big question is, who do I bring in? I have Gawn.
English and Grundy are my 2 options. English saves me money but I’m still sceptical about him. I guess you know what you get with Grundy. Plus both will have tough competition this week

    Fevalenko · 23/07/2020 at 00:20

in the same position! …I'm leaning towards Grundy, i figure if he spuds it up then at least 65% or so people are in the same boat copping the same score

    MagicGnome97 · 23/07/2020 at 02:58

    Get Grundy I reckon.

Jorg Ancrath · 22/07/2020 at 10:25

I'm gonna have to go English. Can't afford Gawn. Watch him spud it up this weekend.

    Holty01 · 22/07/2020 at 10:45

Goldy the only one of the big 4 right now who has a easy opponent. Witts will trouble English. Rucks struggle to score against Brisbane and Grundy will need to deal with Nic Nat crashing into him. But to the person having a go on here a few weeks back about Goldy being a better choice then Grundy and Gawn, just looked to see who he still has to play. Gawn, Grundy, Nic Nat, Witts and Brisbane. He will have a tough run home. Could still score well but it would be concerning being a Goldy owner knowing what is to come.

      NDD · 22/07/2020 at 12:18

Same problem but didn't hesitate Grundy and pay the price

      Lekdog · 23/07/2020 at 19:15

Gawn is now up against Big-O

    MagicGnome97 · 23/07/2020 at 22:03

AuroraBorealis?! · 22/07/2020 at 10:57

In a pickle here community.

I can afford to upgrade Pitto to Gawn, and nothing else this week.

I go Pitto to English and Max King up to Petracca.

Really struggling to decide this one. What is everyones take?

    derek · 22/07/2020 at 11:25

I have same problem. Have just enough cash in bank for a straight trade Pitto to gawn.

I would have loved to get another two rookies off my field this week (King & McInnerny >> BSmith & TKelly).

But i don't think i could stand to watch Pitto again.

      derek · 22/07/2020 at 11:29

Gawn not having a bye is a big factor (Pettraca will be same)

The game changer will be if SC decide to just be best 18 from round 10 onwards. If this happens, and we only need to field 18 each week we can spend up on the Ubers.

Not sure if SC will decide this week.

        AuroraBorealis?! · 22/07/2020 at 12:00

I imagine they will be doing best 18, makes no sense otherwise. I think that both Gawn and Petracca will be must haves. Perhaps the play is to paint the fence this week (with what rookie though) and then look to paint the fence again next week and get Petracca in.

        AuroraBorealis?! · 22/07/2020 at 14:37

An update, i can trade Pitto to Gawn and Budarick to Simpson this week, leaving me with 122k.

Next week (now here is where it gets tricky), I can trade King to Petracca IF Petracca gets 100 or less, Pickett gets 75 or more, and a midfield player debuts next week who will have good JS and scoring capabilities, for Pickett to be downgraded to. Oh, and the rookie has to be 123k or less.

There is some slight wriggle room in regard to the scores but it is going to be incredibly fortunate if all of this guess work comes off.

All of this as well is pointless if a premo gets a long term injury

          Derek · 22/07/2020 at 15:05

          Now that’s a good plan

            AuroraBorealis?! · 22/07/2020 at 15:16

Held together with sticky tape and crossed fingers. Having a 3rd trade next week helps though

Ralph_7 · 22/07/2020 at 11:39

Dev Smith gave away two 50m penalties last week which is -17 points (-8.5 each). Add to that 3 clanger disposals (-4 each) and he would have hit 100. He's still getting a bit of the footy but I think his DE has been down in recent weeks so hes a hold for me and a luxury upgrade (not that I'll get the chance, my team is woeful lol)

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 13:52

He is averaging same as Whitfield ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Tofa · 23/07/2020 at 19:23

I thought the same Ralph. that I'd be stuck with these guys forever. but with extra 4 trades I reckon we can get full teams of actual premos!

Bells · 22/07/2020 at 13:13

Is Ben McKay any good? Is he going to stay in North's team and score ok?

If I can get him in I can go Grundy over English and have some cash for midfield upgrades next week.
Otherwise it's English and Doedee.

    Scouser · 22/07/2020 at 17:45

Likely to be in for a whilst barring a shocker, lots of injury woe at Arden Street to deal with and let's face it Norths defence certainy going to see a fair bit of the ball!

      Bells · 22/07/2020 at 19:20

Went another way after seeing he only had 5 disposals for his miracle score of 86.
Seems the North fans are happy to see him given a go though as he did well in defence.

TRIGGA_HAPPY · 22/07/2020 at 13:48

Like most having a look at an upgrade from pittonet.

As a pod was looking at ROB as he has been scoring all right and is unders for what he can deliver.

Then the draw for rd 9-12 was released yesterday.

The guys in the AFL must have ROB in the gun.

Boy triple G and an E.
That is as tough as you could possibly get for a ruckman!!

Needless to say not going Rob anymore. .. <img draggable="false" role="img" class="emoji" alt="๐Ÿ™„" src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/12.0.0-1/svg/1f644.svg">

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 14:41

How about English Trigga?…second time lucky ๐Ÿ™‚

Derek · 22/07/2020 at 13:50

Having warm bodies, even if they are rookies, better than deadwood on bench.

Last week I was Able to loophole Starcevich & Hill, Aarts & King, and Budarick & Pickett.

The first two didn’t make much difference, but at least I had the chance to pick and choose. But my midfield loop was great.

Holding my rookies that get a game

MagicGnome97 · 22/07/2020 at 14:00

Pittonet and M.King to Gawn and H.Greenwood this week. Next week I'm hoping to get Petracca with my 295k in the bank. Possibly Devon Smith to Bailey Smith.

    AuroraBorealis?! · 22/07/2020 at 14:38

God i wish i had your warchest mate.

How many more upgrades to go after those?

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 15:07

    Trouser stretching stuff

    Bells · 22/07/2020 at 15:22

So you have 800k sitting on the sideline?

Pranav · 22/07/2020 at 14:21

4 more trades giving us 34 trades in total
3 trades will be available to use each round between rounds 9-12
All rounds that features less than nine fixtures will be best 18 scoring which impacts rounds 10 and 11 so far

These are all confirmed changes now

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 14:40

Oh wow, cool, thanks for the info Pranav!

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 15:10

Wowwee. We are really probably looking at best 18 most rounds from 10 to 16

    Game changer

      Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 17:05

Finals in Leagues are from round 14 so that'll be weird, only best 18 in League finals ay

    The Ranger · 22/07/2020 at 15:11

So having playing rookies is gonna be essential

      The Ranger · 22/07/2020 at 15:44

      How's everyone's byes looking?

        Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 16:43

Doesn't seem to affect me much at the moment, 5 missing from rd 10 and 3 from rd 11

          The Ranger · 22/07/2020 at 16:55

          Yeah I'm only missing 6 and 4.
There'll be some that will struggle tho.

            Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 17:03

Yeah Ranger…it's the weeks after that I'm concerned about, will have think about the future trades we make.

              The Ranger · 22/07/2020 at 17:39

Yep, so after Rd11 we should be looking at players from teams that have already had their bye.

Nick · 22/07/2020 at 17:21

Hi community,

What trade would you choose?

1. Devon Smith and Rozee for Petracca and Cody Wightman
2. Rozee and T. Brown for B Smith and Cody Wightman/ Darren Minchington

    JohnDJ59 · 22/07/2020 at 17:40

2, but only because I would keep D.Smith.

    Scouser · 22/07/2020 at 17:48

I'd go for 2 mate, Smith still unlikely to be the worst score on our fields atm even though he jasn't got to where we expected…yet. Swing makes him more useful also.

NDD · 22/07/2020 at 17:31

Only have 1 in round 10 and 2 in round 11. Is there going to be an 18th round and is the melbourne essendon game going to be played?

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 20:38

Essendon and Melbourne won’t have a bye

Shake n bake · 22/07/2020 at 18:00

Simpkin to miss this week

    Jess · 22/07/2020 at 18:51

Where was this? Dam. Do we know how long?

      Shake n bake · 22/07/2020 at 19:35

Didn’t train at all today. Word out of the club he won’t play.

        dontblushbaby · 22/07/2020 at 19:53

        Confirmed on 3AW tonight

    Trades · 22/07/2020 at 22:37

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 22:38

Damn!..means I probably have to keep Rozee another week, what a bummer
I need 3 trades this week.

      Jess · 23/07/2020 at 10:59

Guess I'm playing Bennell in Simpkin's place.
From the news I had seen the club hadn't confirmed him being out yet, so I was hopeful he could still prove his fitness. A loss of 40 odd points hurts but isnt the end of the world

Peter · 22/07/2020 at 18:13

I was going to get in Mcrae this week but now starting to doubt move as Hunter is out and im afraid he might be pushed out to the wing again….what does the community think?

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 22:42

I've had him from the start Pete and am reasonably happy that he's averaging 110 despite not being inside mid the whole time, how long is Hunter gonna be out for?

      Peter · 23/07/2020 at 11:47

They haven't given a timeline …im thinking i will bring in smith and rankine this week and then reassess..i will have enough money to make the trade next week

TOPHAWK1 · 22/07/2020 at 19:14

We are all getting 4 extra trades to finish of the season. We can now basically trade uninterrupted (almost) till the end of the season. 3 trades for rounds 9-12. Noice!

Sal · 22/07/2020 at 19:50

can someone convince me why i shouldnt go tim english + 176k over gawn?

    redherringfc · 22/07/2020 at 20:02

Gawn has had his bye, English hasn’t.

Gawn will outscore English 9 times out of 10 and there are 10 rounds left in the season.

    When Gawn has a stinker it’s a low 100. When English has a stinker it’s a 50.

I haven’t done any research to back up my last 2 points and I might be proved wrong, but that’s my take on the 2.

      Sal · 22/07/2020 at 20:56

the bye is a big thing to consider for me and i know that gawn will almost defintely outscore english, but there besides englishs first two rounds where he took on grundy and got punished, and st kilda with two rucks in ryder and marshall, he has scored 100+ and been enormous and is getting better every week. it is defintely a risk but if he could just score 113 that would be fine.

for me the enticing bit is the 176k, whereas i could most likely turn a noble/brander/budarick into bailey smith next week but if i get gawn i have $500 left.

But not having gawn is really burning me as well as struggling all of last year to get him.

      Pman · 22/07/2020 at 21:19

Agree 100% and now that we've got an additional 4 trades it should allow for another double downgrade at some stage to recoup some of the $$ you are shelling out for Max.

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 20:48

English is priced to score 113
Gawn is priced to score 136

What do you think they will score and compare to what they are priced to score

      Sal · 22/07/2020 at 20:57

what is 1 point equal to in terms of price? seems like a nice way of being able to decipher which players can provide maximum value.

        Derek · 22/07/2020 at 21:06

I just use a simple formula

Add $250,000 to their price and then divide that number by 7500

    Russty_ · 22/07/2020 at 22:51

It's just the Gawn envy thing Sal, doesn't matter who else you have that isn't Gawn, you'll still wish you had Gawn when it comes down to it…and 'it' is when you play someone with Gawn.

Corey · 22/07/2020 at 20:51

Anyone know anything about Ben McKay? Scored 86 on debut on the weekend 149k defender on the bubble. Is he a better choice then going for a Andrew McPherson at 158k?

    The Lost Boys · 22/07/2020 at 20:56

I'd be dubious on McKay – only 5 possessions and is a key position defender (I think) so unlikely to score like that on a regular basis.

      Corey · 23/07/2020 at 08:43

BobGee · 22/07/2020 at 20:51

So are ESS-Melb players to be prioritised now? For instance, is Viney a better choice than Coniglio or Yeo given he’s had his bye?

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 21:09

Only for next 2 weeks. As teams come off their bye they become a target

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 23:03

    Only for next 3 rounds.

After round 10 there will be 4 other teams had their bye and will be fresher

The Lost Boys · 22/07/2020 at 20:53

Trying to decide on two of Hugh Greenwood, Bailey Smith and Tom Doedee to bring in.

I prefer Greenwood and Smith to Doedee, however if I don't take Doedee I need to have one of Stacevich, Brander or Rivers on the field.

What do you think community?

    Derek · 22/07/2020 at 21:12

I don’t think Doedee will be best 6 defenders, Greenwood can be top 6

    As we start best 18, you won’t really need D5, D6, F5, F6 types.

      The Ranger · 23/07/2020 at 09:12

I look at it differently Derek, I think that D5, D6, F5, F6 types might become more important as teams start resting players.
Best 18 to me means getting as few rookies as possible in that 18.

        JugHead · 23/07/2020 at 11:10

The great unknown is which premos get rested and when. This will make and break our scores.
Imagine bringing in Max, partly because he has had his bye…..then he gets rested anyway, just when you need him.
The SC gods are going to mess with our teams big time in the next month.

        derek · 23/07/2020 at 12:49

I don't think there will be a lot of players getting rested. the older ones will 28+. might depend on when their bye is. most teams will be trying to win every game and players will play. it will probably be the fitness staff that have the final say.

i'm thinking rounds 13 – 16 there will be 10 teams getting a bye. the chances of having best 18 for those 4 weeks is pretty high. meaning from round 10 onward, there will be 6 out of 7 rounds best 18 (round 12 the only best 22). Rounds 17 & 18 will be best 22.

to build a team for best 18, will look a lot different to a best 22 scenario.

however, the resting and injury of players could stuff it up, but with the extra trades, maybe we just trade them out when rested.

          derek · 23/07/2020 at 12:59

this is where players like JJK, Darling, Buddy, Lynch, who are cheap but on their day can go big, you can keep at F5/6 and there score will only count if it big

            The Ranger · 23/07/2020 at 13:35

Agreed, JJK is def on the radar as an F6/7 to loop.

      The Lost Boys · 23/07/2020 at 09:13

      Good point thanks!

      Tiger · 23/07/2020 at 10:02

I watched the crows v saints match and was impressed by Doedee’s strong intercept marking. (similar to Haynes GWS) And plus he moved around the ground well. My thinking is that his two low scores hopefully were more about him finding his feet again after being out for so long, and I wouldn’t be surprised that from here on in he becomes a top 8 defender. And still good buying at his current price $$. He coming into my team this week depending upon final team’s.

GJS · 23/07/2020 at 00:00

Bring in Day or Simpson (along with Maxy for Anderson and Pittonet) ??

ROBocop14 · 23/07/2020 at 06:09

I have Grundy and Goldy for my tucks… Would it be crazy to trade one for Gawn?? If so, who goes??

    The Ranger · 23/07/2020 at 10:30

Yep. Crazy. You must surely have bigger problems to fix?

    Pman · 23/07/2020 at 17:08

I'd be keeping them both and not wasting a trade.

    MagicGnome97 · 23/07/2020 at 17:35

yep. use that money to upgrade another player in another line.

1 Ceglar and NicNat out. Gawn and Mayes in
2 McInerney and Ceglar out. Eggy and Greenwood in.
Currently have McInerney, Ceglar, (Simpkin), Brander, D Robertson, Cameron and Sturt on the pine, and Starcevich, Budarick as warm bodies.

Really happy to see Callum Porter debut for the doggies, similar age to me and from my area, was an absolute gun in juniors. Really happy to see him get the call up after being listed for a while, will be watching with interest to see how he goes.

    NDD · 23/07/2020 at 11:28

where did he come from in the western suburbs AB ?

      AuroraBorealis?! · 23/07/2020 at 12:03

South eastern suburbs mate, officer/pakenham area

        NDD · 23/07/2020 at 13:25

Hope the kid does well AB

4 extra trades๐Ÿ‘Do these have to be used rounds 9-12 or are they a permanent addition??

    JEL · 23/07/2020 at 11:27

They are permanent, also you can do 3 trades / week in rounds 9 – 12

Total trades: 34 (increased from 30)

Round 8 trades: Maximum of two

Round 9-12 trades: Maximum of three

Best 18 scoring system for bye rounds (Round 10 and 11)

Jorg Ancrath · 23/07/2020 at 11:57

With Simpkin out, I have to keep either Pitto or Rozee. Two of the spuddiest spuds from the weekend. The replacement will be either English or Bailey Smith. Can't afford better right now.

I'm leaning towards Rozee to Smith and hoping Pitto lifts his game.

Seems like I'm shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic, but any thoughts?

    Connor · 23/07/2020 at 13:02

Does that mean you're trading Simpkin? Or have to keep Pitto/Rozee to avoid a donut?

      Jorg Ancrath · 23/07/2020 at 13:27

Keeping Simpkin. But want to unload the other two mumpties. Might go with Bells suggestion. Pitto was Pitticularly Pittiful last game. Just the Pitts. Pitthetic, really. And so and so forth.

    Bells · 23/07/2020 at 13:16

Pitt has hit the wall – got to get rid of him up against Goldie.
Rozee could have a good game at home and Bailey Smith might have hit his own (much higher) wall anyways.

    Pman · 23/07/2020 at 17:10

Get rid of Shitto, he is garbage and will only bleed cash and has to go!

Trades · 23/07/2020 at 13:18

Fyfe, T.Brown out. Smith & Martin in

Soothsayer · 23/07/2020 at 14:35

I’ve been saving money and thinking of trading Rozee and McInerny to Petracca and Greenwood.

It means I am ignoring Macrae and rookies like Mayes but it’s time to get a forward line. Is it the right choice?

It leaves me with $286k in the bank.

    Pman · 23/07/2020 at 17:11

Good trades and nice amount of cash for next weeks upgrade…

Ando · 23/07/2020 at 15:42

Simpson or Mayes? Who has better job security?

    BlueChips · 23/07/2020 at 16:19

Yeah I would love an answer to this. Where did Mayes play. He is listed as a midfielder but did not actually attend any CBAs. Was he more defence or forward?

    Pman · 23/07/2020 at 17:37

I don't know much about Mayes but surely Selwood and Ablett out of Geelong's midfield means better JS for Simpson who has played really well in his two games thus far…

MagicGnome97 · 23/07/2020 at 17:32

Going Pittonet to Gawn and someone to Greenwood. No idea who to trade out for Greenwood out of Brander, McInerney, Budarick, M.King, C.Taylor and Georgiades. King and Taylor are on field. Thoughts? Also have Simpkin in my forward line so thats something else to think about.

edit: maybe theres no point trading out georgiades when hes actually still 130k.

    Lekdog · 23/07/2020 at 19:15

    He's also playing

      MagicGnome97 · 23/07/2020 at 20:52

yeah. great news that. ended up becoming a choice of trading out either brander or mcinerney, since the rest were all playing.

I traded out Brander. neither were even an emergency this week, but since mcinerney was on the extended bench last week, i felt like he might be more likely to play in the future.

did i make the right call?

        Russty_ · 23/07/2020 at 22:19

I think so, Brander seems to be on the outer and not even named in the extended squads.

          Lekdog · 24/07/2020 at 09:14

          I think so too!
