PODCAST | Marsh Series week one

Published by Patch on

Men’s football is BACK, albeit in watered down, preseason form.

Fozdaddy makes his long-awaited return to the podcast alongside the three chuckleheads of Damo, Lek and Patch to dissect a rapidly shifting rookie situation, the potential of Max Gawn missing round one and the a sudden forward line bonanza of mid-priced awkward players.

They also touch on Dan Houston and co. down back and pull apart a few midifield selections in the bumper coverage of the Marsh Series.

Who caught your eye in week one?

Mighty Chungus · 26/02/2020 at 04:03

Damo! Nice Intel on Houston… We may have a problem. (No… it doesn't get old.)
Bo Derek, lock. Rozee tinted glasses will be out for Marsh 2, and all aboard the Petrappa train, toot toot chugga chugga beast mode aaargh

    Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:25

Of the available forwards Trappa was 10th overall for points scored last year. A slight improvement this year will cement that…maybe I need to change my tune?

Jess · 26/02/2020 at 07:44

A co-worker just put $100 on Gold Coast to make top 4 at $101 odds. He is now going around telling everyone that he is going to win the $10,100 and buy a new car.

When I came to and stopped laughing, I started to wonder whether he could pull it off or not.. After all, Brisbane went from 15th to 2nd on the ladder last year, and GC smashed the cats in the first Marsh. He has a lot of balls anyway

    DEE · 26/02/2020 at 07:55

What’s the odds for Gold Coast to win the premiership Jess? Hmmmm….

    Therealsharkmove · 26/02/2020 at 08:59

Brisbane did show a bit towards the end of 2018 to suggest a rise was on the cards, Gold Coast haven't.

Still with that much talent on their list, not the most stupid bet I've ever heard…..But I probably would be putting the car plans on hold for a bit

    TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 09:37

Fair likelyhood of ending up with a Datsun Sunny.

      Jess · 26/02/2020 at 14:21

Hahaha yeah i guess he makes a fortune with his job, so $100 is nothing to him. Still very funny to see peoples reactions to one practice match

      Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 15:00

      Hey mate, that's probably a classic these days…worth 25K…lol

        TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 19:28

They used to go forever with only the dust holding them together.

        Antique now gold dust …

    EndoftheWorld · 26/02/2020 at 16:52

Can they do a Leicester City? I reckon they could push for the 8. I'd put $10 on that if the odds made it worthwhile.
Premiership odds should have another zero in them if they were reasonable.

TBF Gambling is an absolute mugs game. If the house didn't win 98% of the time, they couldn't afford the advertising to ask you to simply hand them your cash.

    Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:26

It’s a no from me haha

Captain_Risky · 26/02/2020 at 08:33

I hope Dangerfield doesn't embarrass me too much this year! Still an upgrade target for mine, not in my starting team.

    Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:26

Will end up in all of our teams, still a chance to take one of my mid spots at this stage

derek · 26/02/2020 at 13:29

what is the story fellas? draft in 31 hours.

currently set up as only a 12 player team (only 8 on the field + 4 reserves)

how many can we keep from last year? 12?

    Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 13:36

It looks like Gator might have changed it Derek, I'd actually prefer 22 per side, I already dumped my entire forward line lol, 8 onfield will be a bit lame I think, hopefully he checks in today and sorts it out.

      Derek · 26/02/2020 at 13:43

Can we keep as many from last year as we like? Or is there a limit.

Won’t be much of a draft with only 12 players to select.

        Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 15:03

Think Gator said yesterday it's 12 keepers…hope he puts it back to 22, but then I'll need a whole new forward line.

    TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 14:57

OK I confused. I thought Jocks Journeyman was a new draft so how can we have keepers?

But speaking of which I was part of two JR drafts last year but havent seen an invite back so now sure whether they are running and if we can nominate keepers from last year

    Little help??

      Derek · 26/02/2020 at 14:59

      Jocks Jungleland Draft I’m in

        TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 16:40

Ahh jocks jungleland got my J's twisted around.
You can understand my confusion. πŸ™„

Ok. Don't think I am in jungleland.

      Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 15:56

Gator's is Jock's Jungleland and the other one was run by Finnius I think Trig, haven't seen him around much this year so maybe it's a no go there.

    hedski · 26/02/2020 at 18:30

Just posted the same comment to Gator in another thread, it should be kept at a 21 player team where you can retain 12 players then re draft the scraps.

      gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 22:15

Hi all it seems that there Is a bit of confusion about Jocks Jungleland Draft League.. I have now changed the size of the players per side 5/7/1/5/4 = 22 players per side … Going by what I have read the general consensus that all want a bigger side… Unfortunately I cannot change the size of the League which remains at 8 teams which means all teams play each other twice.. No playing through the byes and finals starting round 20… It will also be the 5 top teams playing in the FINALS … As for a keeper side I cannot find anything in the rules on how many we can keep from last years teams we had… Seeing Russty has already has traded down to 12 players maybe we can make that the cut off point…. I would like the thoughts from they majority of the League… Hoping this all make sense.. Cheers Gator

        Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 22:30

Hi Col, hey listen if there's no rules about how many we can keep then I don't want to make anyone else dump half their side because of me, so maybe just let everyone keep their whole side if they want, I can find 10 new guys to make up a side again.
I just thought it was 12 but it's no probs, I got rid of my worst 10 anyway.
        cheers mate.

          gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 22:41

I hear ya Russty.. I could nearly get rid of all my side.. Just happy I got the big bearded bloke from the dees

          gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 23:04

I'll swap at least 6 with you mate

            gator59 · 27/02/2020 at 10:14

You can't have just all demons in your side.. haha

        gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 22:38

Draft is 8pm on the 4th march Melbourne time

    gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 22:29

Hi Derek sorry for all the confusion mate.. Draft date is 4th March at 8.pm.. I have posted the rules on your post.. Cheers mate

      Derek · 27/02/2020 at 09:51

      Thanks Gator.

I like the idea of keeping only 12, makes the draft mean something

With the keeper leagues, there are no rules, but the general feeling is 8, 10 or 12 keepers from last year. Good mix of old and new.

        gator59 · 27/02/2020 at 10:24

Hi Derek well it could come down to how many each team want to get rid of.. For example I may be getting rid of 15 players and yourself may only want to get rid of 8 if you get my drift.. so in the end all will end up with 22 and the snake draft will work it all out for us in the end…. But keeping 12 sounds about right

          Derek · 27/02/2020 at 11:23

A lot of ‘keeper leagues’ have a rule on they can only keep say 12 from last year. Done so one team doesn’t hog all the decent players and makes you think about who to keep.

I’ve got 18 I’d keep, so if I was made to drop 6, I’d have to decide, who do I keep out of Buddy, Westhoff, Breust, Gunston.

At the moment I’ll keep 18, so I’m just drafting for some bench cover, not much fun.

Plus the players available in the draft are pretty lousy

I’d vote for only 12 keepers

TommyC99 · 26/02/2020 at 13:40

Which 2 would y'all pick? Neale and Fyfe seem like the logical picks but Supercoach seems to love Danger and feel like no TKelly hes primed for a big year.

    Derek · 26/02/2020 at 13:52

The great article last week on age was a game changer for me.

I looked into the over 28 age scoring of past players, Judd, Mitchell, Lewis, Swann, kerr, Cousins, jPK, Ablett, and a few more.

    It is REAL

Not only for their average score falling away, but their games played also drops a lot.

You only notice it in hindsight and it is clear as day.

I wouldn’t be surprised in 5 years time to look back on Fyfe, Dusty, Danger etc and see 2020 was the start of the end for them.

The mammoth curve is also true, but it only halts the decline, not return them to their best

    Changed my team completely

      Derek · 26/02/2020 at 14:17

There are always those that buck the trend. Hodge, Stanton, Crawford, primus are a few that had a one-off good year after 29, but take that year away the trend is clear for everyone.

I’ve changed Danger to Cripps and Dusty to Heeney. Gives me bit of cash to go Coniglio (so much value- but might be 50/50 forward) to Kelly or Bont (if I can deal with two midfield doggies)

    hedski · 26/02/2020 at 18:30

    Neale and Danger.

      Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:28

Jess · 26/02/2020 at 14:25

So with all the potential gun midfielders this year, I'm looking at starting Tmitch and Dunkley over Oliver. I know Oliver is geared for a breakout season, but also know he can give away some frees and generally play subpar often. Is Oliver a must have?

Current mids are Macrae, Neale, Cripps, Dunkley, Tmitch.

I know Clayton will improve, but I love my current midfield and dont want to change. Will i get burnt by not starting Oliver?

    Derek · 26/02/2020 at 14:45

Oliver is cheaper than Whitfield. Bat 6 deep in the guts

    Derek · 26/02/2020 at 15:01

Yep. He is the most locked of my midfield

      Shake n bake · 26/02/2020 at 18:01

Better draw to. Fits my byes aswell.

        Jess · 26/02/2020 at 19:47

Will slot him him then. Still not sure pompared to the other top prems

          Jess · 26/02/2020 at 19:49

But who would you drop out of MacRae, neale, cripps, dunkley and mitch???

            Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 21:16

            I'd leave Dunks out Jess

            gator59 · 26/02/2020 at 22:35

              Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:28

    Captain_Risky · 26/02/2020 at 15:23

I think he will not burn you much compared to the guys you have selected. He was a bit like Treloar (17×100+) , very consistent at getting 100's (14) but only went 120+ 6 times. Compare that to Macrae 120+ 13 times, Neale 10 times, Cripps 9, Bont 9, Danger 11, Fyfe 12 and Mitchell 16! ( in 2018)

Still a viable selection, but more an upgrade target for me as he doesn't have the regular huge scores of the others.. I compared all the top 10 from last year .. I should send through the table to Lekdog and get it posted up I guess!

EndoftheWorld · 26/02/2020 at 16:54

Doodee has ruined my plans to be 6 deep in the mids and win Supercoach.
Can't see another similarly priced defender able to give me a solid 80 something.
– And yes I'm commenting before listening.

    Russty_ · 26/02/2020 at 18:51

Do you already have Roberton?…if so, Doedee could be back pretty quickly, he said it's only minor so you could pick him anyway, and sorry but you'll have to come second in SC after I win LOL

    TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 19:24

    Heres a curly one

    How about Stocker?
Blues traded up for him, will play him in the guts or on a wing.
    If fit reckon guaranteed starter.

    Just a thought….

      Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:29

      Birch train

hedski · 26/02/2020 at 18:33

Just put Danger in the guts everyone and suck on that sweet 125 a week. Go cats πŸ‘πŸ»

    TRIGGA_HAPPY · 26/02/2020 at 19:24

    Caution Alabama is coming…..

    Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:29

He’ll be top 10 mids for sure

Lekdog · 27/02/2020 at 08:29

Will watch him closely

Derek · 27/02/2020 at 09:53

Hey NDD, do you have Petracca in your team?

    Derek · 27/02/2020 at 11:30

I do like Rozee, he is a Whitfield Mk2

Never had any success picking breakout players, prefer the fallen premiums

But many of the fallen premiums come with injury risk

Surely Petracca can improve to 90+ and put him in the discussion for a forward keeper?

      Derek · 27/02/2020 at 14:45

      You are the dees expert

      Shake n bake · 27/02/2020 at 17:17

In my side Neil. Was b4 his big game on the weekend. Only needs to improve his minutes in the midfield, dependable, love dees draw fits my byes. I hope I’m right 🀞

        Shake n bake · 27/02/2020 at 17:52

Thats it Neil definitely not looking at his price I’m really looking at him to be at least at top 8 fwd or else just wouldn’t bother. Will start 3 dees this year. Might have to barrack for them on queens birthday πŸ‘‘

Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 14:30

I read an article on AFL.com.au on which rookies and draftees might be ready for round 1 and it's pretty slim pickings, it's a bit of a worry, I can see us having to take whoever's named for round 1 just cause they're getting a game.

    Derek · 27/02/2020 at 14:47

We have been blessed for so long with Subs, GWS and Essendon

The big hit comes to year end team values. No more $14mil teams anymore

Plus many don’t get to ‘full premium’

      Derek · 27/02/2020 at 16:33

      They always do.

In a way it is the easy part now. We usually just get enough, so not many decisions to make, we all end up with the same. Only question is how many do people risk in field (Jy Simpkin like)

      How is Rivers looking?

        Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 22:31

I'm aiming for 5 onfield including Rowell so 4 uncertain.

The Ranger · 27/02/2020 at 15:55

I may well end up back at a more GnR approach but I'm considering more mid-pricers than ever before…how many is too many?!

Daniel, Houston, Doc + rookies
Macrae, Neale, Bont, Oliver, T.Kelly, Rowell + rookies
Grawndy + loophole
Dawson, Petracca, Greenwood, Smith, Rowbottom, Rankine + rookies

    The Ranger · 27/02/2020 at 21:32

Thanks Neil. It will probably come down to a decision based on the available rookies but this mid priced team is tempting me. Partly just because I’ve never tried it before.

    Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 22:34

I'm thinking of going midpriced madness and with Jacobs Ranger so woohoo what the hell this year I think…haha

      Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 22:55

Not for me bud…jeez Parish looked good though, he might've turned the corner this year..I had NicNat in my Draft team but dumped him, think that was probably the right call, he won't get enough game time.
And what about Snelling?….3 games last year at 84 and then 119 tonight, he seems like a decent scorer…could be a good smokey wildcard type.

        Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 23:22

I understand your reticence to back Petracca this year Neil, you and I were talking about him breaking out 2 years ago wasn't it?…on Trev's site…it still hasn't happened.

        DavidC · 28/02/2020 at 06:48

Parish did look good, not sure Snelling is best 22. Heppell to come back in. Lots of mid price options in the forward line.

      The Ranger · 28/02/2020 at 09:50

I just have no experience of managing a mid-priced team Russty. Not sure how the cash geneartion will work.
This is my other team whcih is a bit more GnR…

      Lloyd, Daniel, Houston + rookies
Macrae, Neale, Bont, Oliver, T.Kelly, Rowell + rookies
      Grawndy + loophole
Whitfield, Dusty, Petracca, Rankine + rookies

…torn between the two at the moment.

        Russty_ · 28/02/2020 at 15:21

Hi Mate, cash generation comes from the 4 to 6 rookies you do have onfield, and all your bench guys and from your midpricers like Roberton and Doedee when they're hopefully averaging 80 plus for you…and they'll end up keepers with you not having to trade as much to get rid of dud rookies.

You're also hoping guys like Petracca, Parish, Greenwood, Smith, Steven end up as keepers so you don't have to dump their asses in frustration.

Derek · 27/02/2020 at 23:16

Not sure if Townsend stays in my team on that effort. I guess he is cheap. Is he even in their best 22?

    Russty_ · 27/02/2020 at 23:26

I reckon a serviceable average until you dumped them, for a 222k guy would be about 70 to 75?…61 doesn't cut it but it's just a pre-season game and yeah quite a few best 22 missing I think, although Bombers sure don't have many stars left anymore.

      derek · 28/02/2020 at 11:03

he spent most of first half in forward line. second half in guts

derek · 28/02/2020 at 17:57

did Rivers play?

    Russty_ · 28/02/2020 at 20:20

You gonna put Sparrow in your team Neil?…will he keep his spot?

      Russty_ · 28/02/2020 at 20:31

Cheers for the info Neil, yep I'm a Vic of origin…lol, good to see it's a serious competitive game, very enjoyable so far.

Russty_ · 28/02/2020 at 20:37

Yeah Vics bud, my AFL heart is there, barracked for the Saints since I could walk..I must be a glutton for punishment haha, great event to see all these good players together, just hope and pray no one gets injured.

Cheers gents

Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 16:52

Quarter time GWS v Swans and Jordan Dawson is on 38 points…me likey!
Rowbottom on 7 Stephens 9, Gould 26 and Taranto a Shoulder injury..Bummer.
That Lachlan Ash kid looks allright too.

    Derek · 29/02/2020 at 17:23

I’ve watched Goulds highlights package. Ready made half back. Very good player

      Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 17:24

He's a big solid lad too, ready to slot straight in to our sides πŸ™‚

    hedski · 29/02/2020 at 17:27

Tom Green looks good too, not sure if he gets a game straight up though.

      Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 17:33

He's a solid kid too, so many options in the Giant's Mids…is Naismith number 1 Ruck now at the Swans?…seems to be getting most of the hitouts, cheap option if he takes most of the duties.

    The Jinx · 29/02/2020 at 17:40

Watching a close watch on Green and Gould like what I'm seeing. Worrying part GWS has so many players out in the guts will Green have spot in there.

      Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 18:54

Maybe Hately or Hopper is in front of him for paying their dues, all had good games though, Taranto going down makes things interesting.

Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 18:56

Dawson's a lock for me, not so much Rowbottom or Stephens.

    Russty_ · 29/02/2020 at 19:20

Oh yeah mate I've got Bytel too, not sure when they'll play but would be a good loophole in the meantime.
