Around The Grounds – Round 9

Published by Barron Von Crow on

There were some big scores on offer in Round 9 and even better with some of those scores even coming from our rookie selections! We’re also getting close to the bye rounds which begin in just 3 weeks, so now might be the time for people to start strategizing on their trades to make sure they have adequete coverage for when they hit. And one very important part of the bye rounds is ROOKIES! So let’s go see what happened around the AFL and what potential players we may want to bring in and out of our side.

Collingwood kept their spot on 2nd on the ladder with a 112-71 win over St Kilda on Saturday. Darcy Moore (DEF, $379,000) was a late scratching from this one while Rupert Wills (MID, $166,100 finished with 14 disposals, 3 marks and 7 tackles for 80 SCPoints.

The Pies had a 68-61 loss to Geelong in their VFL match. Ben Crocker (FWD, $248,600) had 26 disposals, 7 marks and 6 inside 50’s and Isaac Quaynor (DEF, $153,300) had 12 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and 5 rebound 50’s.

Carlton had a day they’d probably want to forget after a 138-45 loss to GWS on Sunday afternoon. Sam Walsh (MID, $428,800) had 18 disposals, 6 marks and 3 tackles for 80 SCPoints. His BE is 106 this week, a score he has beaten 3 times, but not in the last month. The Blues have two non-8 teams in St Kilda and Essendon coming up, so he might be able to beat that score, but now is looking like the peak time to trade him. Will Setterfield (MID/FWD, $223,300) had 17 disposals, but with 7 clangers managed just 29 SCPoints, with a BE of 37 coming up. His current 5 round average is 47.4 SCPoints, so you’d want him to put a decent score up soon, otherwise he has likely stagnated at his price. Lochie O’Brien (MID, $243,300) had 14 disposals and 6 marks for 42 SCPoints. Liam Stocker (MID, $147,700) finished with 18 disposals, but like Setterfield, the clanger count hit, which pushed his score down to 45 SCPoints. His BE is -14, so a given he should make a bit more cash, hopefully a cleaner game for Carlton on the whole leads to a higher score. Michael Gibbons (MID, $262,200) had 10 disposals, 3 marks, 5 clangers and 28 SCPoints, he has a BE of 68 this week. Finally, Harrison Macreadie (DEF, $146,800) collected 2 disposals for 14 SCPoints.

The Northern Blues finished with a 88-63 win over the Frankston Dolphins. Patt Kerr (FWD, $230,800) starred with 6 goals, 16 disposals and 7 marks.

Essendon defeated Fremantle 60-53 in a low scoring game on Saturday night. Josh Begley (FWD, $167,600) played his first AFL game for 2019 and had 12 disposals, 5 marks, 3 tackles, but was wasteful on goal with 4 behinds for 44 SCPoints.

Essendon defeated Sandringham 100-87 in the VFL last week. Jordan Ridley (DEF, $305,100) had 21 disposals, 7 marks and 5 tackles and Dylan Clarke (MID, $147,700) had 21 disposals, 5 marks and 2 tackles

Geelong kept their spot on top of the table after their 133-89 win over the Western Bulldogs. Gryan Miers (FWD, $371,100) had 13 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles and a goal for 60 SCPoints. His BE is 82 this week, which seems high, but his 5 round average is currently 80.0, so a chance he makes it, or loses just a tiny bit of cash. Charlie Constable (MID, $342,800) was a late-in again and had 11 disposals, 6 tackles and 61 SCPoints. His BE is 51, hopefully we can avoid the late in or out merry-go-round this week. Jordan Clark (DEF, $252,800) had just 7 disposals for 33 SCPoints, with a BE of 37 on the cards. His 5 round average is 50.4, so should make a bit more cash this week, just maybe don’t start him if you think that average will continue into a 6th week. Darcy Fort (RUC, $117,300) made his AFL debut and had a big one with 3 goals, along with 9 disposals, 3 marks and 17 hitouts for 105 SCPoints.

Geelong had a 68-61 win over Collingwood in the VFL last week. Jacob Kennerley (MID, $117,300) had 14 disposals and 5 marks and Oscar Brownless (MID, $117,300) finished with 14 disposals and 5 marks.

Hawthorn had a 95-59 loss to Richmond on Sunday afternoon. James Cousins (MID, $332,000) had 25 disposals, 6 marks and 79 SCPoints, with a BE of 25. Roll on. Dylan Moore (FWD, $195,400) had 15 disposals, 7 marks and a goal for 50 SCPoints. Conor Glass (DEF, $210,100) was a late in and finished with 13 disposals and 47 SCPoints. Jack Scrimshaw (DEF, $311,700) had 11 disposals, 5 marks and 4 rebound 50’s for 55 SCPoints. His BE is 68 with a 5 round average of 68.2, so he could squeak out a mouse sized fart of a price rise this week. Mitch Lewis (FWD, $207,000) kicked a goal, along with 7 disposals and 5 marks for 47 SCPoints.

The Box Hill Hawks finished with a 78-70 loss to Richmond in their VFL matchup. Jackson Ross (FWD, $123,900) had 3 goals, 13 disposals and 2 marks and Darren Minchington (MID, $190,900) kicked 2 goals with 11 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles.

Melbourne hung in there for 3 quarters, but eventually went down to West Coast 85-69 on Friday night. Marty Hore (DEF, $369,400) had 15 disposals and 7 marks for 75 SCPoints. His BE is 56, a score he hasn’t scored below all year. Jay Lockhart (DEF/MID, $257,200) had 11 disposals, 3 marks and 4 inside 50’s for 52 SCPoints, while Harrison Petty (DEF, $160,700) finished with 10 disposals and 4 marks for 52 SCPoints and Oskar Baker (MID, $123,900) made his AFL debut and had 10 disposals, 3 marks and 4 clangers (3 frees against) for 41 SCPoints.

The Casey Demons suffered a 104-61 loss to Port Melbourne in their VFL matchup. Brayden Preuss (RUC, $239,900) finished with 16 disposals, 6 marks, 34 hitouts and kicked 2.1 and Corey Wagner (MID, $199,700) had 23 disposals, 2 marks and 9 tackles.

North Melbourne

North made a run in the final quarter, but fell just short of their 3rd win of the year, losing 77-72 against Sydney. Tarryn Thomas (MID, $321,100) had just 12 disposals, 3 tackles and 2 behinds for 37 SCPoints, with a BE of 75 coming up, while Nick Larkey (FWD, $206,400) had 10 disposals, 2 marks, 6 hitouts and a goal for 54 SCPoints.

North Melbourne’s VFL side had a bye.

Richmond fell just short of moving into the top 4 on percentage after their 95-59 win over Hawthorn at the MCG. Noah Balta (FWD, $253,500) was the big surprise again, finishing with 14 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal, 3 tackles, 6 hitouts, 4 inside 50’s and 3 clearances for 101 SCPoints. A great all-around game for him and something he can hopefully continue. He’s a bit behind other rookies at this point of the year, which almost works to our advantage in having another source of incoming waiting to be sold off and with a BE of -32 he should hopefully start making some serious coin. Sydney Stack (MID, $335,200) had 17 disposals, 7 marks and 63 SCPoints. His BE is 66 and he is coming in with a 3 round average of 79.0 SCPoints. Liam Baker (FWD, $329,800) had 13 disposals and 8 marks for 54 SCPoints, with his BE of 71 just sitting above his 3 round average of 70.3 SCPoints. Shai Bolton (FWD, $289,100) finished with 11 disposals and 3 marks for 51 SCPoints. His BE is -5 this week, but that is going to go up massively next week once the score of 126 rolls out of his average, but he’ll get at least one more price gain under his belt, even if he scores average at best again.

Richmonds VFL side remained undefeated after a 78-70 win over the Box Hill Hawks. Patrick Naish (DEF, $123,900) had a team high 28 disposals with 5 marks and 2 behinds, Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (DEF, $102,400) had 23 disposals and 2 marks and Mabior Chol (FWD, $102,400) kicked 2 goals with 8 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles and 10 hitouts.

St Kilda

St Kilda suffered a 112-71 loss to Collingwood on Saturday afternoon. Callum Wilkie (DEF, $314,000) had 13 disposals, 7 marks and 2 tackles for 50 SCPoints while Jonathon Marsh (DEF, $163,100) had 12 disposals, 6 marks and 4 rebound 50’s for 57 SCPoints. Callum Wilkie has a BE of 75 coming up, so might be time to jump off him soon. Josh Battle (FWD, $379,200) had 12 disposals and 4 marks for 61 SCPoints and Matthew Parker (FWD, $242,700) had 9 disposals, 1 mark and 5 tackles for 30 SCPoints. His BE is 90 this week, with his highest score of the year being an 89, he’s likely to lose cash this week. Robert Young (FWD, $117,300) made his AFL debut and had 8 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals for 69 SCPoints. Looks like he may be another Matthew Parker type in terms of needing to score a goal or two to put up a decent score, but could be an easy little downgrade trade on offer for you there.

Sandringham lost 100-87 to Essendon in the VFL. Max King (FWD, $193,800) kicked his first haul of goals, finishing with 4.1, along with 7 disposals and 6 marks and Darragh Joyce (DEF, $123,900) had 14 disposals, 7 marks and a goal

Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs had a 133-89 loss to Geelong on Saturday afternoon. Bailey Smith (MID, $381,200) was terrific with 28 disposals, 3 tackles and 5 clearances for 104 SCPoints. Will Hayes (MID, $201,300) had 13 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles with 4 clangers for 31 SCPoints and Lachie Young (DEF, $180,600) had 7 disposals and 2 tackles for 42 SCPoints.

Footscray defeated Werribee 91-80 in their Round 7 match in the VFL. Lewis Young (DEF, $248,900) had 23 disposals, 9 marks and 9 hitouts, Laitham Vandermeer (DEF/MID, $117,300) kicked a goal with 18 disposals and 4 marks and Jordon Sweet (RUC, $102,400) had just 2 disposals with 33 hitouts.

South Australia

Adelaide fell just short of a win, losing to Brisbane 93-92. Reilly O’Brien (RUC, $398,400) had 13 disposals, 2 marks, 3 tackles and 37 hitouts for 88 SCPoints. His BE is 84 this week, a score he has only scored below once, so he might keep for another week, but at this point he may only gain another $15,000-$20,000 with another score in the 85-90 SCPoint range. Chayce Jones (MID, $185,400) returned to the side and had 15 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles, 3 clearances and 68 SCPoints.

It was the SANFL Showdown last week, with Adelaide winning 121-105. Jordan Butts (DEF/FWD, $102,400) had 22 disposals and 11 marks, Darcy Fogarty (FWD, $242,700) moved back to the forward line and had 2 goals with 11 disposals and 5 marks and Tyson Stengle (FWD, $123,900) kicked 4.2 with 13 disposals and 7 marks.

Port Adelaide

It was a tight first half, but Port Adelaide kept the Suns to just 1 goal in the 2nd half to take a 89-51 in on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Oval. Joe Atley (MID, $123,900) played his first AFL game since 2017 and had 66 SCPoints from 19 disposals, 2 marks and 3 tackles. Xavier Duursma (DFE/MID, $322,800) had 19 disposals, 4 marks and 3 clearances for 56 SCPoints and Zak Butters (MID, $253,700) had 15 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles and kicked 1.2 for 76 SCPoints. Duursma has a BE of 76 coming up, while Butters has a BE of 45. Connor Rozee (DEF/FWD, $390,100) had 18 disposals, 8 tackles and kicked 2 valuable goals to finish on 116 SCPoints. This has pushed his BE down to 40 and given him another fortnight of cash generation. Kane Farrell (FWD, $216,900) had 14 disposals, 4 marks and 3 goals for 86 SCPoints while Billy Frampton (RUC, $191,100) also kicked 3 goals with 14 disposals and 3 marks, but 7 clangers (4 frees against) took his score down to 62 SCPoints. Joel Garner (DEF, $123,900) made his AFL debut and had 13 disposals, 5 marks and 65 SCPoints.

The Port Adelaide Magpies lost the SANFL Showdown 121-105 in Round 7 of the SANFL season. Western Australia

Both sides were inaccurate in front of goal, but it was Essendon who got the win in the end, defeating Fremantle 60-53. Again the Dockers did not feature any rookie priced players.

The Peel Thunder lost 80-61 to Claremont in the WAFL match. Tom North (MID, $123,900) had 22 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles, Brett Bewley (MID, $117,300) had 21 disposals, 4 marks and 6 tackles and Lachie Schultz (FWD, $142,300) had 17 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles and kicked 1.1.

This is super useful…as usual!<img src=&quotcomment image" width="1"/>

Great article BVC!
Seems like a decent influx of rookies to downgrade to in a couple… maybe will have to bring one in early and double downgrade the following week to get the most out of them

Dan Whitty

Oskar Baker didn't score well but thought looked alright, tried to take the game on, Robbie Young looked afl standard just the role looks a worry .

Hey Barron, what do you think of Chayce Jones as a downgrade option?

Whitfield or neale the priority this week lads? Thinking Whitfield?

Williams confirmed out, "could miss a couple of games". Doesn't sound too good.

s c tragic

Bummer have to re-think changes I was to make this week yet again. I suppose he is worth holding.

God you’re good
