Around the Grounds – Round 8 Rookie Scout Report

Published by Barron Von Crow on

What a week round 8 was! There was good, some bad and some real ugly stuff out there. We had some unfortunate injuries strike, we had some poor scores from rookies and we had some pleasant surprises also (props if anyone started Noah Balta this week). It’s a new week of football on the horizon though, so lets go see what is in store for us.

Collingwood were given a bit of a fright, but proved too much in the end to defeat Carlton 106-87. Darcy Moore ($379,000, DEF/FWD) had 13 disposals, 5 marks and 3 rebound 50’s for 66 SCPoints. That is his second lowest score of the year, but one that is still higher that his BE of 62 this week. Rupert Wills ($166,100, MID) played his first AFL game of 2019 and first since 2017 and had 12 disposals, 3 marks and 5 tackles with 4 clangers for 36 SCPoints.

Collingwood had a tight match in the VFL, losing 56-55 to Sandringham. Isaac Quaynor ($153,300, DEF) had 25 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles and 8 rebound 50’s.

Carlton were in it for 3 quarters, but the more experienced Collingwood pulled away in the last to take the game 106-87. Sam Walsh ($439,000, MID) had 20 disposals, 4 marks and 2 clearances for 70 SCPoints. He list $13,600 for the week and has a BE of 101 this week, which he has scored higher than on 3 occasions, but not since Round 5 and currently has a 3 round average of 79.3 SCPoints. Liam Stocker ($126,300, MID) finished with 16 disposals, 3 marks and 4 tackles for his 57 SCPoints, Will Setterfield ($213,000, MID/FWD) returned to the side and had 15 disposals and 5 tackles for 67 SCPoints. His BE is 5 for those 51% of teams who still have him. Michael Gibbons ($270,300, MID) scored 61 SCPoints from 14 disposals, 8 tackles and a goal. His BE is 44 with a 3 round average of 54.1 SCPoints. Tom Williamson ($189,500, DEF) had 13 disposals, 4 marks and 2 tackles for 51 SCPoints.

The Northern Blues had a bye for Round 6 of the VFL season.

TThe Bombers fell just short in their match against Sydney, losing 77-72. Zac Clarke ($182,200, RUC) had 5 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 13 hitouts and 60 SCPoints while Brayden Ham ($117,300, FWD) had 5 disposals, 1 mark, 4 tackles and 41 SCPoints.

Geelong kept their spot on top of the table with a 104-80 win over North Melbourne. Charlie Constable ($326,000, MID) returned to the side after double late changes, but it worked out well with CC finishing with 27 disposals, 10 marks, 3 tackles and 92 SCPoints. His BE is 22 this week, so hopefully he can remain in the side for the 37% of teams that still have him.Jordan Clark ($250,300, DEF) had 17 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals for his 81 SCPoints. His BE is 26 this week with a 3 round average of 55.3 SCPoints. Gryan Miers ($365,300, FWD) had 22 disposals and 8 marks, but could have done some more damage on the scoreboard kicking 1.3. He had 80 SCPoints, which moves his BE to 45.Tom Atkins ($256,100, MID) was injured, so only finished with 4 disposals and 12 SCPoints. His BE is now 53, which is just about near his season average of 52.8 SCPoints.

A thrilling game which saw Melbourne kick 7 points in the last 40 seconds to take a 61-60 win over the Gold Coast. Marty Hore ($350,000, DEF) finished with 19 disposals and 4 marks for 89 SCPoints. His BE is 31, with a 4 round average of 87.7 SCPoints he should keep a bit longer if this form keeps up.Jay Lockhart ($221,400, DEF/MID) had 19 disposals, 9 marks and 4 tackles for 74 SCPoints and Declan Keilty ($123,900, DEF) finished with 9 disposals, 6 tackles, 4 hitouts and 4 clearances for 35 SCPoints.

Noah Balta ($198,100, FWD) amazed us all with his 13 disposals, 2 mark, 12 hitout, 1 goal game which netted him 82 SCPoints. That pushes his BE down to -24, so he should make another $50K at least over the next fortnight while that is in his rolling average.Liam Baker ($321,100, FWD) had 19 disposals, 3 tackles and kicked 1.2 for 72 SCPoints and Sydney Stack ($312,500, MID) finished with 18 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles and a goal for 71 SCPoints. Stack has a BE of 11, while Baker’s is slightly higher on 33, but both numbers they should easily beat this week.Jack Ross ($252,000, MID) had just 4 disposals and 15 SCPoints after suffering a ankle injury with no timeline on his return. Would say he’s a trade out this week.

Richmond had a 124-50 win over Frankston in their VFL match. Reilly O’Brien ($374,300, RUC) had a tough task taking on both Paddy Ryder and Scott Lycett and finished with just 10 disposals, 5 tackles, 34 hitouts and 5 clangers for 66 SCPoints. That’s his lowest score this year, but he’ll still have his 123 Round 7 score in his rolling average, so will make a bit more cash still with a current BE of 33.

No SANFL action for Adelaide this week, thanks to the SA vs WA state league game.

Port Adelaide

Port made a run in the last quarter, but couldn’t make up for their earlier inaccuracy, losing 88-68 in Showdown 46. Xavier Duursma ($327,500, DEF/MID) probably had a disappointing score based on his stat line with 61 SCPoints from 22 disposals, 5 marks, 2 tackles and a goal. His BE is 65 this week. Connor Rozeee ($373,300, DEF/FWD) was probably the opposite, with 77 SCPoints from 13 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles and a goal, his BE is also up to 77 SCPoints this week, though his 3 round average does currently sit at 82.0 SCPoints. I need to downgrade Walsh in mids as he is bleeding cash from here on. I can’t upgrade and can only downgrade.
Who is on offer other then possible Hately & Stocker?

Sadly no one – lets hope Hately is picked this week or Stocker will have to come in instead. 1 up 1 down = Macrae or Fyfe and Hately or Stocker. Holding Walsh myself i have bigger problems and i would prefer more points from walsh onfield instead of a few thousand in salary.

Not sure if bleeding cash is accurate, be careful trading in a rookie now as there is a reason they didn’t play the first 6 weeks and you could end up with no cover during the byes and wish you had Walsh’s 85 points

I think Rowbottom has had a couple of good games in the reserves. Big chance of getting picked this week, in the bubble at $117k.

If named I think they will give him a few games to show what he has got.

Ross to Sloane, Laird or Stewart?

I like Stewart cause his head is as hard as a Cat's head, cause he is a Cat, and his head's hard, he got hit in his hard Cat's head really hard and came back into the game, cause his head's as hard as a Cat's, cause he is a Cat…etc.
Ok, I'm done now.
He's like an old school tough mofo…like the flying doormat, and he does good things.

Stewart is a beast. Saw him live on Sunday and can confirm the hardness of this cat's head 🙂

Thoughts on Seb Ross?

Might be true, but probably the best mid Saints have playing week in, week out.

360K. Looking at your best two trade ideas this week. Thanks in advance.
Laird, Sicily, Whitfield, D Moore, Duursma, Collins, (Clark, Answerth)
Macrae, Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Libba, Walsh, Setterfield, Hayes, (Atkins, Scott, Gibbons)
Gawn, Grundy, (Bines)
Danger, Heeney, Boak, Drew, Balta, Parker (Burgess, Corbett)

Is anyone able to provide an honest and accurate assessment of Stocker? I haven’t been able to watch the last two Blues games, his first game obviously has some warning flags but looking at his second game stats seems like he was just a couple less clangers and FA’s away from a solid 65-75 score. Appreciate any opinions

Hi Mick, i just re-watched his game before, he did make some rookie errors with disposal, and dropped a few marks but had 16 with 10 kicks and 6 handballs, d/e was 87.5% which is promising, gave away 4 frees against which hurt his score too.
I reckon he's worth the punt.

I agree rus, I’ve traded in far worse over the years….

Yeah swanny haven't we all mate?…his body looks ready made too, he's not a skinny little waif who'd get hurt easily.
Blues got some good ones this year.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

Looking at downgrade and up grade this week
Thoughts on who to flog,
Petruccelle. Drew. Scrimshaw
And who to get thinking Dunkley degoey
Unsure on rookies

Daniel Hooper

Duursma to Hately if he plays (via Answerth)
Brad Crouch to Neale

If MCrouch is out, hold Brad as he could have a very big week. Neale’s BE is 158.

I love you Barron

Thoughts on Walsh out Sloane in?
