Happy Ending – 2nd Week of the AFL Finals

Well week one of the final series is done and dusted and for those who were able to avoid some of the carnage are sitting pretty going into the second week of the finals.

After round 1 the leaderboard looks like:

At the other end of the ladder is poor old Kelly gang who unfortunately had Josh Kelly as captain as well as having Buddy in his team.

Finals are a different beast which basically comes down to two words:

Pressure and Execution.

Some teams had one but not both while other teams had neither which resulted in an early exit from the finals. Those teams who applied both and went harder for longer live to fight another day. Gotta bring your A game to finals or you will be found wanting.

If you don’t believe me cast you mind back to the byes as the first round of the AFL finals in the happy place is very similar to the byes where the top 18 scores count as well as a captain pick with the exception in the happy ending that you could pick the best two players from each team.

The top score was 1718 with the 5th best 1627. How many of us scored over 1627 during the byes and that was with rookies on the field!

How’s this for a list of scores from the premos who played over the weekend who had an average over 100 during the home and away season.

Under 80.

Jake Lloyd, Shannon Hurn, Patrick Dangerfield, Issac Heeney, Scott Pendlebury, Jack Gunston,  Jarrad Roughead, Mitch Duncan,

Under 60. (Rookies scored around this or higher than this score during the year)

Sam Menegola, Jack Riewoldt, Jordan De Goey, Shane Edwards,  Luke Bruest, Adam Treloar,

Under 20!!

Josh Kelly (injured Qtr 1) – 18

Lance Franklin???? -16

Buddy played a full game and scored less than Josh Kelly who was injured in the 1st qtr.

Yep finals are a different beast.

Looking at that lot it appears if you avoided Golly Josh and Buddy Hell you were in the top 5.

Onto Week 2.

The rules for week 2 are set out below:

Blank canvas. Start again. (Every Week)
•No salary cap! That’s right you can pick whoever you like without breaking the bank as there is no bank as long as it is within the rules as set out below.
• Can’t have the same captain each week. No vice captain.
•No Bench
Sounds easy right? Well here are the rules.

1. Maximum number of players from each team as set out in rule 8 below. (with 4 teams playing week 2 of the finals that is 3 players from each)

  1. Players must be named in the supercoach positon that they were given during the regular season (i.e. Dangerfield can’t be a forward). As per spreadsheet.
  2. Captain selection. As there are 4 finals the captain must be selected from the 4 areas of the ground over the final series. So from a mid, fwd, back and ruck over the 4 weeks of the finals. Not necessarily in that order. It is up to each individual in what week they selected the captain in each position but must be from a different position every week. As per the rules of the regular season your captain pick will double their score each week. To select the captain there must be “C” next to their name.
  3. All teams must be entered in spreadsheet below before the first bounce of the first game in each week of the finals. Teams are locked in from this time with one exception (Rule 5).
  4. If a player is named in the team but is late withdrawal before the first bounce of their match (i.e. Kelly) the player can be replaced before the game with a player from the same team in the same position. Again this change must be posted on the JR website.
  5. Supercoach points to be applied to each player selected as per the heraldsun supercoach point scoring system.
  6. The highest combined total of points for the players selected in a team will be deemed the winning team for the week.
  7. The highest total number of cumulative points from players selected weeks 1-4 in the AFL final series will be deemed the Supercoach Finals overall winner.
  8. As the finals progress blank canvas every week. With players to be selected from participating teams as follows:

Week 2 of Finals: (From 4 Teams participating – Maximum of 3 players from each team):
    •12 Players consisting of:
    o3 Back
    o5 Midfield
    o1 Ruck
    o3 Forwards

I have created a new spreadsheet for week 2 of the finals which can be found on the link below.

I have left the captain the same as everyone gets how it works. The captain for week 2 has to be from a different area of the ground to what was used week 1.

As the graph is linked to each team can you put your team in the same spot.

Good luck.

Gone to my happy place be back in a few …

Beauty Trigga, didn't manage to avoid the carnage but can still hopefully end up in the top 10 somewhere, cheers mate.

  2. Russty_ says:

Hey guys, go to if you want to play in the Jock Reynolds League next season which starts in early October.
Runs for almost the entire year, so if you follow the U.S PGA Tour, it's a bit of fun. Use your JR Name.
Just go to leagues and search for Jock Reynolds League if you're interested cheers…Russ..

    • Great fact hunt says:

I’ll be in on that one rusty. Sounds great. Gives me a reason to watch more golf not that I need it. Thanks

  3. WTFoxtrot_58 says:

After thinking I'd missed last week and was out no one was more surprised than me to see the results.
Thanks again to Trigga for offering to load my team…absolute champ.
Thought I'd get in earlier this week, so subject to selections
    Good luck guys.
    Week 2
    o3 Back Williams, Sicily, Crisp.
o5 Midfield Whitfield, Titch, Oliver, O Meara, Sidebottom.

      • WTFoxtrot_58 says:

        Hi Rusty..
My only access to this site is on my phone.
For some reason I can't drive the sheet from there.

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

      Gr8 start WT
looks like you avoided the carnage by some choice selections
would have been a travesty if your team didn't play rd 1
      that wasn't going to happen

I have entered your team as per above.
good luck but not too much – we all need to have a chance to catch you.

  4. magic mullet says:

    second place, lets go!!
selections are in, have peek if ya want.

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

      hey mullet man good start

I had a look and your team and you had big maxy as a Capt last week so as per the rules above you cant have another ruck as a capt this week,.

can you select a capt from a different area of the ground?

      • magic mullet says:

ahhhh I thought it was just you can't have the same player as captain twice in a row,

  5. Great fact hunt says:

Thanks again trigga, have entered my team, I assume it’s done ok. Not tech savvy. Seems no where to save and close. Hope ok

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

no worries mate bit of fun and ramps up the finals that bit extra so all good
      team looks good to me
I think it just saves as you go along

  6. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

    The big QUANDARY this week:

    Gawn or Grundy?

    cant have both

    Who will you choose??

    decisions, decisions….

    • neil demons delight says:

Hi Trigg This is great As much as I hate it Grundy.s the man. got to fit 3 dees in also and with so many playing well Gawn misses out. Probably wont get a coffee with him if he reads this. Oliver Tmac Harmes me thinks cheers fellas.

      • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Yep think Im going Grundy as well.
Might even drape the big C around his neck as his neck may not be around week 3.

Good onya ya to finally give Tmac a gig.
Not going gawn gives clarry a gig. 😁

  7. Derek says:

i've got a big ? next to Josh Kelly for next year. He will be in the high risk category

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Yeah injury history bit of a red flag.

    • neil demons delight says:

Still at least we can have T kelly

      • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Wonder how he will go in a west coast jumper?
        Gaff in a swans jumper
        Lynch in yellow and black
        Sheil in navy blue
Hannas in red white and black

        Tis the silly season already….

        • neil demons delight says:

Don't count the Dees out of gaff Trigg .They really want him It will cost plenty though. and maybe a premiership player

          • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Do u guys really need him?
Got some good inside and outside mids.
Whereas hogan for cerra there's a win, win.

            • neil demons delight says:

it's not Hogan that's being floated though Trigg try Tracca

  8. AuroraBorealis?! says:

Managed to sneak into third on the leaderboard, here's hoping i can continue the form

  9. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

    Two big outs:

    JOM & Kelly.

  10. neil demons delight says:

No Omeara will hurt hawks and surprised to see big boy taking on gawn alone NDD

  11. WTFoxtrot_58 says:

    Hey Trig

O'Meara out has forced a reshuffle for me.
    Apogies in advance..

    Fwd TMac out Gunston in
    Mids OMeara out Adams in
    Backs Crisp out Brayshaw in

  12. Ahmad rubas says:

    def crisp brayshaw mcdonald
mid titch oliver cogs ward treloar
    ruck grundy
    fwd sicily gunston taranto
this isnt a final team ill enter final team before the bounce as im still unsure on gawn or grundy currently on grundy because i think id rather tmac/brayshaw over howe/degoey and still unsure on captaincy as i want to captain sicily so i can captain a ruck next week and a mid in the grand final to hopefully finish strong but it could end up being very silly if gawn and grundy both get knocked out this week

    • Russty_ says:

Yeah Ahmad, I reckon this is the week to captain a Ruck as they could both be missing next week.

      • Ahmad rubas says:

It’s the smart and safe thing to but I don’t like any of the forward options remains in finals compared to Sicily who seems to have a higher floor compared to other forwards and I’m confident Melbourne make the prelim. Titch is interesting 155 and 192 without O’Meara

        • Russty_ says:

I heard Harmes will go to Ttch, not sure if that'll stop his scoring or not though.

  13. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

hey lads had a quick review of the teams this week

Ty and Tiger you haven't selected a captain this week, make sure you put the C next to a player before first bounce tomorrow

Derek, random and James you chose a back as your capt last week, please select another area.

    • Derek says:

I thought I had Danger as C last week

      • Russty_ says:

Hi Derek, nah you had McGov as C last week.

        • Derek says:

Really. It’s the technology I blame. I thought I put it on Danger last week and Grundy this week. Maybe I’m moving someone else’s C.

If I can’t work it out, I want C on Grundy.

          McGoven! Sheesh!

          • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Capt pick is on the left hand of your team next to team name.

It is the skinny column above the count of players in a team.

            • Derek says:

              The left hand side.

You better check with the team on my right if their C was mysteriously changed last week.

          • Russty_ says:

Didn't work out too bad though mate, he scored more than Danger anyway haha

  14. Shake_n_Bake_ says:

Morning Trigga, hope you can help me out & submit my side?
    Sicily Brayshaw williams.
Oliver capt mitchell Adams Whitfield Pendals
    Taranto McDonald Gunston.
Tnx Trigga only 50 behind not bad!

    • neil demons delight says:

Taranto's risky Shake no Greene ?…Both are terribly unreliable. pity we cant have 12 Dees but then which 12 Good luck with your Pies mate That's going to be a ripper contest though the undersized wood defence could bring them undone cheers NDD

      • Shake_n_Bake_ says:

Im really hoping we can close him down!! Because he’s playing us just dont want him to play well. Taranto should get more minutes in the middle l think Neil with Kelly out. 50 50 this game. Defensive always undersized but lets hope we get enough of it were that wont come into play! Thats why l have Pendals & Adams need them to fire!

  15. hedski says:

Gday Trigga/fellas, pretty happy to sneak into 7th place last week with Danger cap and Buddy stinking it up.
If you could plug my team in mate that would be awesome cheers.
My main pod this week is no Titch, I think Harmes will do a job on him, could go horribly wrong!
    Howe, Brayshaw, Williams.
    Oliver, Adams, Cogs, Ward, Shiels.
    Grundy (C).
    Sicily, Harmes, Gunston.

  16. Russty_ says:

Hey Trigga, Ricky Henderson's not available in the drop down box…any reason for this?

  17. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

6 teams still to be completed and a couple are still missing a capt

  18. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

As there still seems to be some confusion on the captain or C I have moved the column so it is now next to the player.
It is on the left next to the players name.
Please check to see if you have selected the right captain.

    The columns are:
    Team/captain/player/SC score.

random & james change your capt cant be a back again

hopefully this now clears things up.

    • hedski says:

Looks like a couple teams could be caught out with JOM.
Jeez Lekdogs got a set of aggots on him picking big Cox!!

  19. Russty_ says:

Keep your eye on the red and the bluuuuue..Go Dees

  20. Finnius says:

Viney would have been a good pick – absolute beast in finals.

    Titch looking in pain…

    • Russty_ says:

Might've had a cortisone injection…good for us, bad for him, that stuff is pure evil.

  21. Ahmad rubas says:

um idk whats happened but the spreadsheet says i have the C on no one i put it on sicily in the end if you could check the edits you could see i was switching between grundy and sicily but settled on sicily and then i closed it. now it says no one is captained if you could check the last edits to see what happened i would appreciate that trigga

    • Finnius says:

Ahmad your captain can't be a back – might have to go with Grundy

    • Russty_ says:

Trigga should be still able to fix it for you Ahmad..but you did pretty well last week so maybe we should leave it as it is lol

      • Ahmad rubas m says:

Lol just getting lucky with the C team selection is meh plan was to leave ruck and mid for prelim and grand final only picked yeo cause I wanted the pies to lose and Sicily cause highest averaging forward no real logic to my captain choices

  22. hedski says:

Now this looks like a good finals game!
Carn the Dees (that hurts after last week)

  23. Ahmad rubas says:

I had Sicily in the forward line or i can’t captain him because he has defence eligibility?

  24. Tyruddanaut says:

    Well I chose O’Meara then forgot so….

    • Tyruddanaut says:

Also if anyone has access to the sheet, can you put the C on a player for me. I don't really care who. Thanks

  25. PremiershipEagles says:

Dees wont be getting this sort of armchair ride from the umps over here next week. Not if the umpires want to get out alive anyway. Most blatant umpire assistance I've ever seen in a finals game

    • Russty_ says:

Yep the Umpires were paid off…it's all a conspiracy, has nothing to do with one team playing better than the other team.
Get real mate…this kind of whining is so lame it makes me want to puke…at your kind of comments.

      • Piesfor2018flag says:

Nobody is suggesting that the umps were paid off the suggestion is that the afl has interfered for Melbourne in the same way that they did for the bulldogs in 2016. They think that its good for the game to have a fairytale in the finals series and it is, for media and merchandise. The bulldogs didn't suddenly flop after their flag win they just received equal treatment to the other teams. It's a bit naive to think that the afl don't control who wins the flags and the medals, its a business mate not a game.

        • PremiershipEagles says:

In cricket they call it 'benefit of the doubt' and it usually only goes to the batsmen. I reckon the umps will have a few doubts over here next week. Do I follow the afl directions or do I get back home without any scars

      • neil demonsdelight says:

Read Russty's comments again mate. It's tounge in cheek stuff.the opposite of what you think .He disagrees with premiership

      • Russty_ says:

Hahah, funny how you think you know I was banned for some reason when in fact I never was, SC-66 was though, permanently for his behaviour, but somehow you manage to keep sliming your way back in here…pretty sad really.
Nice positive post btw by a newbie such as yourself, real valuable contribution.

    • Piesfor2018Flag says:

Yeah I wanted Melbourne to win and reckon that they would have anyway without the umps playing for them but this is terrible. How can they miss so many obvious frees to hawthorn and pay so many iffy ones to the Dees.
They'll obviously try to even it up a bit in the last but the game is already over. #stopinterferingafl

      • Russty_ says:

They're paid to call it as they see it, if they show any bias at all they're re-evaluated as to their competency to perform as an unbiased Umpire…on a regularly scheduled routine.
Your claims, as to the Umpires being biased towards one team in the finals series is ludicrous, also known as, it doesn't make sense.
Your opinion doesn't really count for much as you are obviously biased towards Hawthorn and they're losing…because they're losing to a better team, just deal with it instead of being a whiner and trying to create some kind of drama that doesn't really exist.

        • Defying_Madness says:

I was agreeing with you until I read the bit about the dees being the better team tonight. Hawthorn clearly played better for the majority of the game just couldn’t score and got really unlucky with the umpires

          • Russty_ says:

Sorry to disagree mate but the team with more points on the board at the end is the winner.

            • Defying_Madness says:

Yeah obviously the winner has more points. The better team doesn’t always have more points though. Whoever plays better for the majority of the game is the better team imo.

          • Derek says:

Hawks kicking let them down again. Gunston miss that was massive.

            • Defying_Madness says:

Yeah that one was huge, 12 point turnaround

              • Derek says:

The Bruest non-mark would have been handy if called fair

                • Defying_Madness says:

Yeah that one had me fuming along with the tackle on poppy in front of goal when he didn't have the ball. Not to mention whenever we tackled someone they would call in the back instead of holding the ball as it should have been.

      • MadPunter says:

It's like you can see the future Pies. It happened exactly as you said it would in the last quarter the umps missed some Dees frees and gave the hawks a few strange ones to even up the stats. Have you got any insights for the ponies?

    • Finnius says:

      They've just been absolutely robbed…

      • Defying_Madness says:

Focusing on one call there Finnius When hawks were playing better the umpires kept the dees ahead. Looking forward to the eagles flogging them next week

        • Finnius says:

Sound a bit bitter there mate. The only obviously bad calls were the three in the last quarter that gave the Hawks a shot. Best team won in the end. Lets go the deeeeessss.

          • Defying_Madness says:

I guess you didn’t see the push in the backs that weren’t there that results in demon goals in the third. What about the holding the man call that wasn’t paid in the second quarter for puopolo right in front of goal. Breusts mark that wasn’t paid? There are plenty more I am forgetting as well. I think you get my jist though

    • neil demons delight says:

No one's mentioned Brayshaw's free against or Lewis 'which was similar Better team won .read the stats boys/

  26. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

    Weita bang!

    Hogan -Cerra lock it in.

    • Russty_ says:

Don't think Hogan is up for grabs, reckon Petracca might be though, Hogan will be invaluable in the Dee's future as their main key Forward.

      • Finnius says:

They love Trac as well Russty. Can't see him leaving any time soon.

        • Russty_ says:

We'll see I guess mate…Dees are gonna win this game though…it'd be nice if Petracca stays at the DEES but not sure if he will…be good to see him evolve into what he could be.

  27. Ahmad rubas says:

    100 up for the dees

  28. Russty_ says:

Keep your eye on the red and the bluuuuuuue 🙂

    • neil demonsdelight says:

what do you think of Hannerbury Rust

      • Russty_ says:

Hey Neil, don't think he'll be helping our cause out very much mate, think they need to be looking at getting guys in who aren't almost past their use by date..and are racked with injuries.

  29. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

The good ol' NDD demon express is starting to really gather speed …..

    • Defying_Madness says:

I said it before the game that whoever would win tonight was just delaying the inevitable. JJK and Darling both back and ready to go after recovering from injuries. Dees weak link is their defence and the Eages will expose it. Should be a flogging down in Perth where the Dees can't rely on frees. Should be a cracking game though, looking forward to it.

      • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

True if they get easy ball going forward will be too strong but if Melb win the clearances and move the ball forward well then we may just have a game…..
As long as they dont bomb it i as McGov owns the air space back there

      • neil demons delight says:

The dees defence is at least equal to the Pies and Taller They performed ok. Besides that they can always throw the great Tommy Mac down there I would suggest that the Hawks have had a great year considering Cyril went and for this game no Stratton or JOM Nash will be better next year as will Morrison .It's tough losing but umpires had nothing to do with the final result .beaten by a hungrier team

        • Defying_Madness says:

Yeah I don't rate the Magpies defence either though. Definitely wasn't hunger that was the problem though it was moreso polish and composure over anything. I think the inside 50's in the 2nd quarter were around 17-5 hawks way and we kicked 0-6 to the dees 3-0. The Gunston poster was a 12 point turnaround as well. If some of those easy misses were goals I think we would have won.

  30. MadPunter says:

Is this a weekly comp or do you need to be in it from the start? What's the prize?

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

Hey MP can put a team in each week
      Blank cancas, no salary cap.
So can still have a shot at the weeky bragging rights over the JR crew.

  31. AuroraBorealis?! says:

Is there a rolling lockout for this? I didnt realise i still had Treloar in, could've sworn i changed him to T.Adams

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

      Sorry mate
To be fair to all locked out start of first game ad per rules above.

      No rolling lockout.

  32. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

    Scores are updated lads.

Been out all day just got back,

Random leading the way Rd 2 with 633 with NDD breathing down his neck with 632 with his demons esp big Maxy maxing out
Titch best scorer for hawks – sorry hedski 🙂

Capt obvious nailed the capt choice selecting the highest scorer in big maxy out of last nights game.

Be a bit fresh at the G tonight – if you are going rug up!
I'm gonna settle back by the open fire and watch the fireworks.

Random if you are reading this quickly respond with a capt for tonights game as you have already used a back.

    Game on ….

    • hedski says:

Ha ha, that's OK Trig my choice was Titch and Greene or Ward and Gunston, I came out on top.

    • Randomcliche3 says:

Oh shit I out it on gawn and then I entered my team in the correct spot. Oh crap ola. Sorry.

  33. TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

    Hot pies …

  34. PremiershipEagles says:

uurrghh. Another game where the early interpretations of the rules is linked to the colour of your jumper.
Apparently dropping or throwing the ball is fine if you're in B&W and having 3 blokes jump on your back is when you're on the ground is holding the ball if you wear orange

    • PiesforFlag2018 says:

You don't have to punch the ball off a flat hand mate. all you need to do is make contact with it with one hand before it leaves the other. Treloar doesn't throw he just moves his arm/hand in the direction he wants the ball to go then taps it with other hand it's perfectly legal

      • PremiershipEagles says:

Pendlebury is the chukka mate, has been most of his career none of those short 'handpasses' in congestion are legal he hardly ever makes contact with the other hand and when he does its usually an open hand. He also drops it like a hot spud as soon as he's tackled in a clearance situation.
Umps were a bit better in the 2nd but missed half a dozen frees to the giants in thier fwd line. Don't you think its a bit strange that haven't missed any in your fwd line? I understand the afl want a pies v tigers game next week it will make a lot more money than another giants game and they're already down a few bucks due to the lower capacity of the cauldron

        • Russty_ says:

Yep the fix is in…it's all just a big fix so the AFL can make more money, the Umpires, referees, Media, everyone is in on it except the Members and fans of the game.
See how nuts this sounds?…Umps don't always get it right but they're doing their best under a lot of pressure, it's not about some grand plan to make more money for the stockholders…sheesh.

It's ok mate I don't expect you to understand, you seem a bit slow.

the flick pass sounds like EJ

    • MadPunter says:

I put a lazy $500 on the Pies partly due to looking at some videos with your theory about afl interference in my mind eagles and partly due to it being played in antarctic conditions. I was a bit worried until the video review guys let the obvious touch by Davis stand as a goal.
I reckon you blokes might lose next week eagle, a Melbourne v Tiges or Pies is the game the afl want and I'll be putting a $k on the Demons without fear, if there down at half time I'll take advantage of the extra odds in relative safety to I reckon #safestbetoftheyear

      • PremiershipEagles says:

Yep maybe that rusty kid should take a look at that video review before he starts puking again.
The umps don't have enough courage to go against 60,000 punter I'd re-think those bets if I was you. Don't forget that the richest aussies are over here and they usually get what they want 🙂

it says on mine that i cant have a ruckman as a captain but i changed it to Sicily on Thursday,
just wondering if you counted it?

    cheers trigga

    • TRIGGA_HAPPY says:

      Hey MM
you selected big maxy as capt rd 1.
So you have used your ruck captain.
Rd 2 you had sicily so used your back captain

So you have a fwd and mid remaining to choose a capt from for the next 2 rounds.

New article and spreadsheet with rd 3 player selection should be out soon … 😁

With JR crew for posting on site.
