Supercoach Rd 14 : Rookie Scout Report

Published by Barron Von Crow on

Finally, the bye week madness is over for another year!

Howdy folks, I’m Barron Von Crow and this is our weekly Supercoach Scout Report.

We’re in the home stretch now, we have just 6 more weeks to get our sides ready for the Supercoach Finals. That’s where we start to enter the difficult part of both upgrading our sides with their finishing touches, as well as conserve as many trades as possible for the inevitable issues that happen in the last couple of weeks of the year. But we’re not here to worry about SC Finals just yet, we’re here to take a look at what our rookies did over this shortened  Round 13.

West Coast VS Geelong

Nathan Vardy

RUC | SC Price: $366,000

Round 13 Stats: 15 disposals, 1 mark, 7 tackles, 31 hitouts, 125 SCPoints, 100 CKPoints

Tom Cole

DEF | SC Price: $217,900

Round 13 Stats: 8 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 50 SCPoints, 46 CKPoints

James Parsons

FWD | SC Price: $213,300

Round 13 Stats: 7 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 51 SCPoints, 45 CKPoints

Tom Stewart

DEF | SC Price: $326,300

Round 13 Stats: 17 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 74 SCPoints, 78 CKPoints

Nathan Vardy’s score of 125 SCPoints was an equal career high (scored the same against St Kilda in Round 18, 2013) and was just the 3rd triple digit score he’s had in his 37-game career.

Tom Cole played his first match of the year after playing a pair of AFL games around the same time last year. He was only averaging 13 disposals in the WAFL this year, so doesn’t look like he’ll have ultra high Supercoach potential. Tom Stewart continues his solid run, with his 3 round average now at 79 SCPoints and a BE of just 45. He’ll keep for a little while longer if this scoring rate continues.

North Melbourne VS St Kilda

Declan Mountford

MID | SC Price: $123,900

Round 13 Stats: 15 disposals, 3 marks, 5 tackles, 59 SCPoints, 61 CKPoints

Kayne Turner

FWD | SC Price: $340,400

Round 13 Stats: 9 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal, 4 tackles, 43 SCPoints, 47 CKPoints

Declan Mountford played just his 2nd game this year after a 12 week break from AFL action. He’s on the bubble this week and there aren’t a ton of downgrade options available, so he could come into play out of sheer necessity if named.

Richmond VS Sydney

Shai Bolton

MID/FWD | SC Price: $181,400

Round 13 Stats: 14 disposals, 3 marks, 2 goals, 63 SCPoints, 57 CKPoints

Daniel Butler

FWD | SC Price: $247,700

Round 13 Stats: 4 disposals, 3 tackles, 14 SCPoints, 20 CKPoints

Nic Newman

DEF | SC Price: $428,600

Round 13 Stats: 26 disposals, 4 marks, 7 tackles, 104 SCPoints, 112 CKPoints

Will Hayward

FWD | SC Price: $226,200

Round 13 Stats: 10 disposals, 4 marks, 1 goal, 45 SCPoints, 50 CKPoints

Shai Boltonwas on fire for the 1st half of the Richmond/Sydney game (on 79 SCPoints at the half apparently) , but couldn’t keep that pace up, but a score of 63 is still better than the scores in the 40’s he put up the two weeks before. If you’re one of the 10.5% of teams that still own Dan Butler now might be the time to trade him out, with a 3 round average of just 36 SCPoints and a BE of 73 on the cards. He lost $22,600 this week and may be on trade for another decent loss this week.

Nic Newman may not even need to be traded out at his current pace. He’s currently the #13 ranked defender in Supercoach, which puts him ahead of guys like Rance, Shaw and McDonald and he’s only 7 SCPoints away from jumping into the top 5. The Sways have Essendon, Melbourne, Gold Coast and GWS over their next 4 which might be a good time to let Newman see how he goes and then re-evaluate him closer to the start of SC finals.

Port Adelaide VS Brisbane

Sam Powell-Pepper

MID | SC Price: $348,100

Round 13 Stats: 16 disposals, 1 mark, 5 tackles, 2 goals, 85 SCPoints, 75 CKPoints

Dan Houston

FWD | SC Price: $301,100

Round 13 Stats: 17 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles, 90 SCPoints, 65 CKPoints

Jake Barrett

MID | SC Price: $350,000

Round 13 Stats: 17 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal, 54 SCPoints, 77 CKPoints

Jarrod Berry

DEF/MID | SC Price: $293,500

Round 13 Stats: 16 disposals, 2 marks, 44 SCPoints, 39 CKPoints

Hugh McCluggage

MID/FWD | SC Price: $249,900

Round 13 Stats: 13 disposals, 1 mark, 3 tackles, 33 SCPoints, 48 CKPoints

Sam Powell-Pepper continued his decent run against Brisbane, while Dan Houston returned to the side and put in a good effort. He should probably stick with the injury to Jared Polec, as well as average performances from some Magpies in the 2’s. His ownership percentage has dropped from 23.5% when he played in Round 7 vs the Eagles to just 5.2% for last week, but those who kept him should have another bench option for a bit longer. Jake Barrett and Jarrod Berry were a bit down, but they’ve both put up decent scores lately and both have achievable BE’s this week.

Gold Coast VS Carlton

Jarrod Witts

RUC | SC Price: $475,900

Round 13 Stats: 9 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 39 hitouts, 72 SCPoints, 83 CKPoints

Mackenzie Willis

DEF/MID | SC Price: $214,000

Round 13 Stats: 9 disposals, 1 mark, 29 SCPoints, 22 CKPoints

Ben Ainsworth

MID/FWD | SC Price: $257,800

Round 13 Stats: 9 disposals, 5 marks, 2 tackles, 39 SCPoints, 47 CKPoints

Caleb Marchbank

DEF | SC Price: $371,200

Round 13 Stats: 15 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, 55 SCPoints, 65 CKPoints

Sam Petrevski-Seton

MID | SC Price: $322,700

Round 13 Stats: 15 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal, 64 SCPoints, 64 CKPoints

Zac Fisher

MID | SC Price: $220,500

Round 13 Stats: 11 disposals, 5 tackles, 47 SCPoints, 45 CKPoints

David Cuningham

MID | SC Price: $306,100

Round 13 Stats: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 6 tackles, 44 SCPoints, 64 CKPoints

Tom Williamson

DEF | SC Price: $227,200

Round 13 Stats: 7 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 29 SCPoints, 28 CKPoints

Jarrod Witts reportedly had a sore shoulder during his game against Carlton, but there hasn’t been any word on that keeping him out for any amount of time. Some of the Carlton boys like Caleb Marchbank and Sam Petrevski-Seton are getting near their BE limits and may be on the chopping block soon.

Western Bulldogs VS Melbourne

Mitch Hannan

FWD| SC Price: $311,200

Round 13 Stats: 15 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 2 goals, 90 SCPoints, 76 CKPoint

Mitch Hannan has been on form in the last few games, with his average over the last month sitting at 78 SCPoints. His BE is 42, so he should have a few more weeks of life left in him if you still need to keep a rookie option playing in the F5/F6 spot.

Andy Otten – 122 BE

Kayne Turner – 102 BE

Andrew McGrath – 100 BE

Sam Petrevski-Seton – 99 BE

Riley Knight – 98 BE

Cam McCarthy – 93 BE

Tim Taranto – 83 BE

Ryan Burton – 80 BE

Jake Kelly – 78 BE

Tom Williamson – 72 BE

Ben Ainsworth – 39 BE

Will Hayward – 35 BE

Dan Houston – 31 BE

Tim Broomhead – 30 BE

Tom Cole – 28 BE

Zac Fisher – 27 BE

Nathan Vardy – 17 BE

Harry Perryman – 14 BE

Matthew Scharenberg – 3 BE

Ive never followed a rookies progress as much as i have b.eddy, 6 GOALS! give him a game ffs

Probably comes back when you don't need him & would prefer to use his as a loop. That's how the Gods operate

Howard kicked 8 goals for them the week before and didnt get a game. Shame Eddy doesnt play for a poorer team because he would be playing every week.

HELP !!!

Neale because he has a higher ceiling

Been running the rule over them both this morning, Winter, and they're bloody hard to split. I'm leaning towards Neale, his d.e of 77 v Zerrett 69 is appealing. Sick of seeing my midfield bulls get plenty of it but have poor d.e.

Tackle numbers are about the same, Neale gets more contested footy and shades him for clearances

The DE isn't everything though, Merrett averages 5 more touches, a tackle more, 20 kicks vs Neale's 12. And a mark and a half. haha

Merrett all day every day.

Happy Gilmore theme.

Been awhile since we have had an update. Bloody work getting in the way. Yeah I know get my priorities right which I have this week. So I give you the Happy Place Update.

Halfway through the season and here is how we sit.
SCAddict is undefeated on the top of the ladder. Is it little wonder he is inside the top 100 teams. If he comments sit up and take notice as he is generally bang on the money. I played him this week and felt the wrath and raw power of Addict. Kicked my butt. Damn Rd 13 bye didn’t help but.

Swans and INP take up the next two positions on the ladder and then it is eerily similar to the actual AFL ladder with 1 game between 4 and 10. Every W is critical. Tight as a fish’s butt.

The Happy Place has moved inside the top 100 teams with our league ranking now sitting at 80.

So with a ranking of 80 there are some seriously competitive teams with no easy games and quite a few of the boys sit comfortably within the top 1000 teams. Even Patch’s poison potatoes who sits at the other end of ladder can be a tough match up if they all turn up on the day.

Rd 13.
Iceberg dead ahead. More than one SC ship smashed headlong into the icy beast with the splintered remains floating in the water and the occupants gasping for air looking for something – anything to keep them afloat.
Ugly just ugly as most of the premos we had didn’t fire or the rookies produced rookie scores. If things worked out your way this week you would have shot up the rankings. The Byes do sort out the contenders from the pretenders.
Give yourself a pat on the back if you scored an average of 1,800 per round during the byes. If you scored more congrats you have made a move up the ladder one step closer to glory.

As for the Happy Place it really depended on your team and who you had sitting on the pine Rd 13.
When the dust had settled the winners were:

Rick Grimes

Biggest drop in Price
Jarrad Waite

And the award goes to: (lowest scoring premo – starting price > $480k) and not injured during game
He has got the double.. Jarrad Waite – 37 SC points

Jock has also set up a JR community Group where any team can join and compete against one another under groups:
Overall JR Group Leaders:
We have a new JR leader.
Well done Paul – Hutto’s Hitmen leading all and sundry community group members with an overall rank of 24!

Hopefully one of this great community can be standing on the winner’s dais at the end of the year!
Good luck to all.

It's a very competitive League Trig. Won't be easy to make the 8

Love the update trig, gunna be an interesting couple of months, I'm setting my sights on addicts no1 spot

You can have my spot instead if you want, I won't be needing it much longer

Surely Eddy in this week… He's been sitting on my fwd bench for quite some time just waiting for the call up!

Is Luke Shuey a legitimate option at M8.. 499k. Has 6/10 remaining games at Domain. The bloke is a burnman and a campaigner but I think he can be a decent POD on the way home.

I've had him all year, he hasn't performed up to expectations but he is certainly a keeper. He'll probably be another Yeo, somebody that I picked one year too soon.

Rick Grimes

I've had him from the start. He was good early on but went off the boil. Last weekend was promising and was what I had hoped he might achieve, 110-115. As you say, has a good run at home and is probably underpriced. But if you can afford to go elsewhere, I would.

Upgrade to Neale, Merret, T.Mitchell or Dusty? Bloody stuck here boys!

Money a priority or just looking for a final upgrade? Neale is value, Dusty the risk reward, Mitchell the consistency.

I would go for Neale. He has the potential to go big like Dusty but not as many people have him.

if you want consistent with a chance of going big, Tom Mitchell.

Black D

Brown or Beech as downgrade in the fwd line?

Brown. Mitch McGovern is due back for the Crows soon.

Don't think Brown will get much more games

Ok so how many trades is enough to sit on until finals do you think?

I have 10 and thinking of going 2 double trades to finalize my sides until finals leaving 6 trades to pimp my side come finals time.

After next week my team will be. (CAPITALS are 4 players I'm planning on brining in.)
D: Doc, LAIRD, Adams, shaw, Hibb, Newman (Harbrow, RYAN).
M: Danger, ZORKO, Pendles, Hanners, Trelor, Wines, Beams, Fyfe, (Bolton, Cousins, JUNKER, to DP swing with Adams if premo mid goes down).
R: Grundy, Sandi, (Strandica (to swing with Nank).
F: Dhal, Mcrae, Wallis, Buddy, Yeo, Nank (Mcinnes, Greenwood, to swing with Bolton.

Fire away.

Cheers, lots of big decisions need to be made next 2 weeks.

Wizard of Ertz

I'm bringing in Junker as well. It's that time of the season.

I have 7 trades left with only 15k in the bank.

Thinking of holding for 2-3 weeks but any other advice is welcome!

Team is:

Laird, Doch, Adams
Roberton, Hibberd, Tuohy
(Ryan, Hibberd)

Danger, Martin, Pendles
Zorko, Oliver, Kennedy
Fyfe, Scooter
(Fisher, Cousins, Brown)

Martin, Nank (Strnadica)

MacRae, Yeo, Greene
Dalhaus, Franklin, Greenwood
(Parsons, Eddy)

Scooter injured hurts you. Need an M8, trade Scooter and Fisher for Lloyd and maybe m/f you can swing Greenwood with if needed. Then sit tight.

Agree with Milllsy you need an M8. Think your a few dollars short of going Fisher to Junker & Scooter to Bont. You could consider Shuey or Wines or as Millsy said Lloyd

Traded Fisher and Scooter for Lloyd and Maynard.

Swung Adams to the Mid and put lloyd in the backline. Leaves me with 93,000 left for my last upgrade later. Which will be swinging nank fwd and trading greenwood.

Only have 5 trades left now

Have seen a few with 4-5 left & 2-3 rookies still onfield. But go easy with the trades for a few weeks & hope Greenwood flies up in price

Given you will upgrade Scooter at some point , you need to get Nank out of your ruck. He is your weakest point.

Yeah i know. Will be looking to swing nank fwd after greenwood makes some more cash and i might be able to target gawn also.

Well done

The Ranger

I went up 27,000 places over the byes with a total of 5408
Which tells you that a) I planned the byes reasonably well and b) that's all I have planned well this year!

I score 5518 but only went up 2084 :-/

Mine similar, scored 5548 over the byes and moved up about 3300 after careful planning all season according the JR's first magazine. Sitting on 1438 now. Way too far off the leaders so struggling with not making a few polishing trades to correct a couple of premos and holding my trades for leagues.

You could get higher up the ranks than you think, teams drop off due to jumping on bandwagons, others run out of trades entirely trying to keep up with the jones'.

The Ranger

You're a bloody legend Barron, thanks again mate.

Hi All,

I have a decision to make;

I can either bring in Lloyd or Heeney. Question is who is going to have the bigger price rise this round. I am leaning towards Heeney.

Also what are thoughts re mcinnes from west coast will he be playing any time soon?

Both will probably get around the same price rise after this round. But Heeney will be cheap again at some point IMO. Lloyd won't be this cheap again.

Mcinnes is on the rookie list so very unlikely to get a gig

Rick Grimes

Anyone got the balls to pick Gray? So cheap, massive ceiling, no consistency. Could be the move of the year if he can pump out those 129s. Or I go Dependlebury or Zerrett to finish my mids.

Pendles or Zerrett mate. No need to take any risks.

Beady Eye

I was looking at Gray as well, but his scoring history this year makes for horrific viewing. Can't do it.

3 sub 45 games (so far). You'd need to be desperately short of cash to consider that. Pendles or Zerrett for sure Rick

I rolled the dice on Robbie Gray at rd 11, scores of 44,85 & 129 for an avg 86.

Had to take the risk because I was so short of cash and wanted to have my team semi premium by rd 14.

I was really hoping he would get into the midfield more but he is basically a permanent forward I would stick with Pendles or Zerrett and bank the 115avg from here on in.

Nice john. Well done. Its a great feeling when it happens.

As long as you have strengthened ur team though it is worth it.

Who is junker and how long is scooter out

The cheapest non playing swing option $102 def-mid, good for downgrade on mid bench

Thoughts on Berry to Ryan and Barrett to Yeo (to then swing fwd once Greenwood makes enough cash to upgrade)?

Sounds like a plan to me

Nice trades

Steven Jurica

Exactly what I am doing mate, the Lions boys have done their job and it's a perfect time to pickup Yeo as he has proven himself as a premo forward.

Mystic Mac

Hope Fyfe pulls his finger out this week

I hope not. I traded him out last week. Maybe the rest will do him well but wont even be in the top 20 mids if his form doesnt improve.

If you had to choose two of Rance, Shaw and Newman for D5 and 6 who would you choose? One of these will become a mid upgrade in the next couple of weeks.

I have 11 trades left with 94.5k in the bank

My team is
D: Laird, Adams, Shaw, Hibberd, JJ, Berry (Scharenberg, McNiece)
M: Danger, T.Mitchell, J.Selwood, S.Selwwod, M.Crouch, Bont, Dahlhaus, SPP (Myers, Mutimer, Hewett)
R: Grundy, Witts (English)
F: Yeo, J.Kennedy, Macrae, Broomhead, Bolton, Greenwood (Eddy, T.Smith)

Thinking of trading out JJ for Ryan and S Selwood for someone like Neale or Zorko. Any advice appreciated

you gonna have enough to get your team to full premo + have a few emergency trades for injuries etc? that's the main thing to consider.

Is that C hewett (Port)? or G Hewett (swans)?

i think you need to hold JJ. You have others to upgrade before him.

i count 16 keepers (including JJ and Witts). means you need to get 6 more keepers.

1 Defense, 3 Midfield, 2 forward line

Even if you paint the fence the next 5 weeks, you will use 10 trades and still be 1 short of full premo. plus you will run short on cash if you buy players like Zorko and Neale. You need to be looking in the Bargain Bin for players like LLoyd, RGray, Parker

I suggest to also hold SSSelwood, he will be back soon and you will need to call him a keeper.

You need to come up with who you want to fill your last keeper places. need at least 5 before you can do anything else, then work out if your cash cows can give you enough money to do the upgrades.

Lloyd or Hurley for D6?

Lloyd for mine. See no major difference in scoring capacity and the cash saved can be used to bolster your squad elsewhere.

any forward rookies coming up at alllllll?

any rookies at all next week on the bubble?

Callum Brown seems to be the only one at the moment.

cheers ill keep a close eye on him this week 🙂

Dawson from Sydney might get a run. Been doing good in the magoos and would be on the bubble if selected.

Don't Blush Baby

Freo – Ryan DEF, Norf – Mountford Mid & Pies – Brown MID/FWD are notable ones

yeah ryan is a must this week 🙂

Shhhh… Ross may be listening.

That's why we should think about Montford …. I have Ryan in at present … finger poised to hit Reverse.

Don't Blush Baby

Tim Gossage WA just reported – Sandi – should play, JJK – maybe another week if not 2 , we'll see

🙁 JJK originally was 2 weeks max

Nah 3.

trade out myers/fisher or berry?

Berry gives you the most cash & more options

agreed – but also seems a great option for injury cover

True Lazza. Logan post your team in the Podcast comments with the same question. See how the DPP loss impacts

Depends on your DPP coverage. Berry is still useful … the others not.

Traded Berry-Ryan then upgraded Otten-Adams thoughts

Solid trade but will be cheaper next week or ideally the week after

Traded Parsons – Brown then upgraded Barrett – Lloyd. Thoughts?

Sounds good to me.

Sideways trades on GAJ, Fyfe, Tuohy. Other than that mainly just forced to trade aggressively due to not picking enough value at start of season.

I have 10 trades left and 148K in the bank.

Thinking of holding trades for a couple of weeks to generate money.

DEF: Doch Laird Simpson Rance Shaw Hibberd (Berry Ryan)
MID: Danger Z.Merrett Pendles Oliver Bont Adams Fyfe SPP (Pickett Cousins Freeman)
RUCK: Martin Nank (Strnadica)
FWD: Yeo Macrae Dahl Buddy Lynch(GCS) Greenwood(ADELAIDE) (Bolton Eddy)

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated .

Yep agree with you. Hold.

Okay I'm in a bit of a predicament at the moment.

I've got 9 trades and 23k in the bank

Def: Doc, Laird, Simmo, Howe, Newman, Lloyd, (Rance, Sharenberg)
Mid: Danger, Titch, Pendles, Oliver, Bont, Treloar, Fyfe, SPP (Barrett, Fisher, Brown)
Ruck: Nank, Ryder (Strndica)
Fwd: Yeo, Heeney, Macrae, Dahlhaus, Steele, Greenwood (Parsons, Eddy)

Now previously I had planned to go Newman and Barrett for Neale and Ryan. However I didn't expect Newman to look this good. So now I have 7 premos down back (depending on how you clarify Newman). This is my first problem. Should I keep that seventh premos down back or downgrade one for some dosh.
If all goes well (I'm looking at Fyfe, Steele and Nankervis here) my last trade before full premos after this round will be be big Max Gawn in the Ruck (via Ryder or Nank).
I absolutely want to get one of Neale or Merrett this week (preferably the former) so how should I go about getting him in?
My second problem right now is Fyfe and Steele. Right now I'm just going to wait it out but from what I've heard these two blokes may not even be playing in the coming rounds. Thoughts?

Captain Risky

Maybe get rid of Barrett, Swing Lloyd into mids for a while and see how the rest of def goes..bring in Ryan

I'd be looking at getting rid of Steele and Parson as well as a priority. Can't see Steele getting back in this week. Only issue is you have the best 4 forwards already and none of the other options look that tempting!

Probably have to swap Fyfe for Neale if that's who you want to bring in.

Sorry, probably doesn't solve your problems..

Should be depending on how you *classify* Newman

Fyfe hasn't been dumped, and is averaging 11 more per round. Steel out before Fyfe for sure. There's no cash to grab from trading Fyfe, you won't get a better player for that price.

13 trades left $85k in the bank. Was going to downgrade berry to Ryan leaving me with $262k. The problem now is I don't know who to upgrade! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

DEF: Doch, Adams, Laird, Simpson, Shaw, Newman EMG Stewart, Berry
MID: Danger, J.Selwood, Zorko, Treloar, JPK, Bont, Fyfe, Barrett EMG Bolton, Lloyd, Cousins
RUCK: Grundy, Nank EMG English
FWD: Macrae, Heeney, Dahlhaus, Franklin, Stewart, Greenwood EMG Parsons, Strnadica

Barrett to Merrett is tempting. Leave you with 50k headstart to boost your forwards in the following weeks – which will help as our benches thin out
