NAB ANALYSIS: Carlton v Essendon
It was like Land of the Bloody Giants down at Princess Park this arvo.
Out of the Windy Hill toxic peptide waste swamp have risenย a pack of hulking towering man beasts. They had me scrawling into the old notebook like a frothing rabid dog. And mark my words – a few of them are fantasy relevant.
24 hours ago we were stroking ourselves in satisfaction at having identified Mason Cox as a lock. We now have a few more Ruck/Forward rookies to have a think about.
Missing from best 22:
Carlton (9): Matthew Kreuzer, Marc Murphy, Cornboy Cripps, Bryce Squibbs, Dennie Armfield, Andrew Walker, Dale Thomas, Matthew Wright, Lachie Plowman
Essendon (7): Mathew Leuenhamneggnburger, James Kelly, Matty Stokes, Mark Jamar, Adam Cooney, Nathan Grima, Mark Baguley
Essendon:
These two lads below are the kids I’m talking about folks. They impressed the absolute crap out of me. But it’s complicated. Yes – they performed impressively today. However we need to think about where these kids fit at Essendon alongside Leuenhamegg, Jamar and McKernan;
Sam Grimley $124K RUCK/FWDย Was discarded by the Hawks and snagged by Essendon as a top up player. And he was a real focal point up forward. With his height and forward sense he wouldย provide a thumping headache to coaches trying to cope with Daniher alongside him up FWD. Played with aggression and spirit with his highlight a huge grab over the top of 2 Carlton defenders early on. Did it a few times. Can’t kick the side of a barn door kicking wise based on what we saw.. but also got up the ground and was instrumental setting up a few across half forward. Can see him sneaking ahead of Jamar and McKernan in the pecking order with his versatility. Finished with 1 goal 4 today.ย
Sam Michael $124K RUCKย Yes he was a good lead up target across high half forward a few times. Yes he showed some real penetration driving it into the forward line. What really impacted on the trouser was his mobility at ground level. At one point in the second quarter he crashed into a pack at ground level, plucked out the pill, was dispossessed but then willed himself to the pill on the third effort to drive it into the forward line. His desire on the second and third effort was evident on more than a few occasions. Again I’m left wondering where Jamar and McKernan fit in this lineup. His lack of DPP and doubt around his place in the 22 at Essendon will keep him out of most teams given the quality we’ve been provided with. But given he cracks a RD1 spot he could be a real special.ย
I want a GIF of that Sam Michael bull rush. MAJESTIC.

Mitch Brown $117K FWD/DEF Lock him away into your team.ย Played the General both deep in defence and higher up across half back and the wing. Experience at senior level was very evident. Composed. Clean. Reads the ball in flight beautifully and his decisions driving out of defence were wonderful. Plenty of pill today, finishing with 20 disposals at 85% efficiency.ย
Darcy Parish $202K MIDย showed us all how he earned his #5 selection in the draft. 104 Supercoach points. Poised. Looked more mature than he should be for his age.ย Makes good decisions underย pressure which is critical.ย Will clearly line up in the best 22 based on what we saw today but I won’t consider selecting him at this elevated rookie price. 19 disposals, 5 marks and 4 clearances today.
Nick Kommer $124K FWDย Was quiet early and looked bloody angry all day. Would suggest it may have something to do with the ridiculous dag of hairย having off the back of his head. Get fair dinkum and cut the think off Nick. Just the 7 possessions at 57% efficiency which will sow that seed of doubt for looking at him as a FWD bench option.ย ย
Michael Hartley $117K DEF ย Looked slow early but eased into it. Shoulders heavily strapped and looked tentative. Best and fairest at Coburg and has been impressive there. Showedย poise clearing out ofย defensive 50. 14 possessions at 85%.ย ย
ย Jonathan Simpkin $223K MID/FWDย has been high on my watchlist as a midpriced FWD option.ย Was quiet early but worked his way into the game. Nothing flash – just a middle of the road workman like performance.ย 11 kicks, ย 6 handballs but did deliver the ball inside forward 50 six times.ย
Craig Bird $348K MID/FWD I expected a bit more of although he did accumulate as many tackles (9) as anyone out there today.ย Didn’t have a significant impact on the game – but Worsfold will enjoy some of his defensive pressure work in the clinches. Just 14 touches today.ย
Ryan Crowley $203K MID Was booed every time he went near it – but he went near it plenty. Plenty of ball deep in defence early and appeared to roam free all over the field. This is the first time in a long time we’ve seen him hunting his own ball without hanging off the jumper of the poor prick he’s tagging. 17 possessions and a sausage.ย
Brendon Goddard $525K MIDย Also copped the boo every time he had the ball, and he had it 21 times today. Played all over the joint and roamed free which is a luxury he wonโt have when the real stuff kicks into gear.ย Kicked em from the boundary 55m out and was as influential as always. Not much to take out of this performance fantasy wise – just know that he’ll cop a savage tag when the real stuff arrives.ย
Will Hams $158K FWDย Didn’t see much of it but did slot one after a 50m penalty in the first half. 21 year oldย – can’t see him slotting straight into the Essendon 22.ย ย
David Zaharakis $414K MIDย Was dominant and is looking very fit. Interesting point of difference selection at this price and given hisย proven scoring capacity. Again – you’d think he’ll cop some heavy attention once the season kicks into gear so you’d need some robust plums to go there.ย ย
Zach Merrett $447K FWD/MIDย Based on what we saw today he’ll absolutely compete with Bird for a regular spot in the guts at Essendon given their situation this year.ย Was very lively with 22 possessions and looks as if he’s ย increased in general body girth. Impressive 9 pointer on the bounce in the second quarter and was instrumental in a number of Essendon forward movements. Interested in Patch’s thoughts here. 122 Supercoach Points
Zach Merrett a nice option in #SuperCoach, finishing with 15 handball receives and 122 points. Also attended 9 CB’s.
โ Fantasy Freako (@FantasyFreako) February 28, 2016
Jake Long $117K MID/FWDย the son of legend and great mate Michael Long hit the park in the second quarter where he was amongst the action quickly. Coughed it up with his first touch but minutes later presented well on the lead and slotted one from 40m. Won’t see him early and not one to consider but looking forward to seeing him emerge over the coming seasons.ย
CARLTON
Jacobย Weiterung DEF $221Kย showed he can certainly step straight into senior football this year. He collected 19 posessions and an incredible 9 marks in his first senior hit out. Will be a special player for a long time if Carlton can hold him – but at this price I’m reluctant to consider him. Brilliant reader of the ball coming into the opposition FWD line. Took a number of composed intercept marks across the backline – will be fantasy relevant for years to come ESPECIALLY in CoachKings where these intercept marks are worth big arse points. Did not have him on my watch list before today but I’ll admit I’m tempted. Rare talent and a great bloke.ย
Davidย Cuningham MID $122K really disappointed me today because I know this kid can play. Started in the guts for the first few centre bounces but lookedย overwhelmed early. Barely sighted for the rest of the game and I’m not sure he even touched the bloody thing. Could be time to remove him from the cheat sheet. Might see him later on in the season as a downgrade target. Chin up David – I know you’re a good JR Community man. NEVER relent. NEVER give in old mate.
Andrew Gallucci FWD $102Kย was absolutely towelled up by Mitch Brown earlyย but showed some aggots by working his way into the game.ย Copped a few very harsh frees against which will make his Supercoach score look ordinary, and did cough here up quite a few times. He’s a premiership player for Williamstown but will be up against it to crack into the best 22 this season.ย
Ciaran Byrne $124K DEF showed a bit of twinkle toed flair and had the Carlton Army up and about at Princess Park on more than one Occassion. Still on the rookie list and probably needs to do a bit more to force the selectors hand. Just the 8 touches.ย
Jack Silvagni FWD $117Kย didnโt get his kit on till half time. Had a few touches but didn’t show enough to warrant any meaningful fantasy arousal. 5 touches and nearly blew the roof of the park with his 3rd quarter behind.ย
Charlie Curnow FWD $171Kย started to get his hand on the ball this week. Didn’t set the world on fire and by no stretch of the imagination will he make any of my starting team lineups.ย
Samย Docherty DEF $473Kย wasn’t fair dinkum today. Had to double check to make sure he was out there which isn’t a good sign. 6 touches, 3 of them clearances out of defensive 50.
Kade Simpson DEF $500K only played the first half and did what he usually does. Not much to take out of this game. Same role, same magnificent Kade.ย
Lack of quality game but very fanstasy relevant. First look at Jacob Weitering and I loved. It seems those balls will be flying in there all year, and hopefully he'll be plucking them. I know his costly, but is he along with mitch brown (ess) starting rookies?
After watching that rubbish you could be forgiven for thinking that it was the team in blue who had their best players banned due to institutionalised cheating
Is Darcy Parish a lock, or are we leaning towards Mills?
Sometimes that 9k between Mills and Parish can be a lot, Vinny! My personal choice is Mills, but will come down to who is named round 1
neither for me
Mills get on
Weitering and Crowley both looked good,, Hmmm has me thinking about them now..
I guess Weitering will see plenty of the ball back there so I’m thinking about adding him too.
What about Edwards? Relevant at the price?
Agree, thoughts Jock?
What do we take out of kade Simpsons game?
Looked good early then unsighted.
Thoughts please community
Kade simpson didnt play 2nd half.
Thanks. That explains it
Finding myself being tempted by mid pricers from all over the place lately. Doesn't help that I've had a few rookies not quite get up. Badly need to keep my discipline! Any word on Menegola's injury?
Yes, there are plenty, especially with Essendon: Zarharakis and the "Top Ups". Also have O'meara, Libba and Polec in mid. You have to save some money somewhere and I am banking on price rises for these guys to trade up/down.
Love to see thw sc scores for this game…some fat juicy cows getting around in this game.
Carlton's lineup out there today has got to be up there in the worst teams ever to take the field at AFL level. Made a team of players who basically had never played together before look like contenders.
Sam Docherty's game worries me, I just put him in at D2 a couple of days ago, and now I'm not so sure. The bloody backline this year, I tell ya!
Mitch Brown and Co impressed, and I think Simpkin did enough to take my F5 position. I wouldn't be too worried if he's SC score today is a bit under-par, I doubt he'll average 3 FA every game. Should run through the guts and deliver into the forward line frequently enough, and might slot some goals along the way.
We're in for an interesting year folks!
only played the second half
26 Supercoach points in a half of footy doesn't cut it in a team where he should dominate, against a team he should dominate.
Great Job Patch Zaharakis is on watch list now as think Goddard will get more attention.
Thoughts Community on team so far, happy to cop criticism and make changes! Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Def: Shaw, Rance, K Simpson, Brown, Hartley, Collins (Bonner, Broad)
Mid: Dangerfield, Pendles, GAJ, Gray, Rockliff, Libba, Mills, Gresham. (Gore, Cunningham mathieson)
Ruck: Nic Nat Gawn
Fwd: Martin Higgins, Barlow, D Menzel, Nakia Cockatoo, Petracca, ( Kerridge, Kommer)
Higgins having minor knee surgery to clean out "old bone fragments", Norf are confident he'll be right for round 1. Keep an eye out for further news.
"toxic peptide waste swamp" hahahahaha
Brown: Lock
Hartley: Lock
Simpkin: Locked with one of those cheap $2 padlocks you can buy for you luggage
Don't really need to see them again, reckon all 3 are walk up starts.
Galluci and Cuningham… Eh, I'll look elsewhere. Worrying signs for Carlton
How did you rate McTip's game Jock?
Sorry meant great Job Jock!!!
Nah you were right first time mate.
Docherty didn't play a full game though did he
docherty only played about a half
And what the thoughts on r3 this year ? Some options emerging in cox, grimley and Michael ,,, loophole at r3 or look at that spot too make some coin ?? Be interesting to see people's tactics there
I considering using a loophole with one my def def bench players too be honest
I've got Cox at R3, with Max King from Melbourne on my FWD bench for my loophole.
Just pick which rookies you think will play. Not all of them are gonna play every round. At first. Pick who's gonna play because you want to generate cash for the finals. You should be just preparing your team for the finals. I'm not starting with a definite loophole option.
My team at present;
DEF: M Boyd, J Bartel, D Rampe, J Weitering, M Brown, N Broad (M Hartley, K Collins)
MID: S Pendlebury, D Mundy, R Sloane, T Rockliff, T Adams, M Duncan, T Liberatore, D Parish (B Keays, R Matheson, D MacPherson)
RUC: M Gawn, K Tippett (S Grimley)
FWD: C Wingard, M Barlow, M Robinson, J Simpkin, W Milera, C Petracca (S Kerridge, T Phillips)
how much money do you left?
73.6k
That team is a car crash in slow motion!!
Reasons?
Was at the game we had most of our midfield and kruzer out so not to concerned. However Jones and Rowe should never play another game ever. Weitering is a lock even at his price and Parish is looking good. I don't see many cheap mids putting their hands up so I am happy to pay 200K for a special rookie like Mills and Parish.

Out of these guys, I'm seriously considering Fantasia. Like the look of him as that D4. Between him and Aish for me. Also have Simpson, he only played half a game so not concerned with him. Mitch Brown is 100% locked into my backline after this performance (which he already was) and if you don't have him, I question if you are a fair dinkum supercoach player.
Cheers Jock. Just letting you know that Parish only scored 74 as opposed to the 104 points that was stated in the article.
Kerridge was also missing for the Blues today
What happen to Docherty?
Only played the 2nd half. Game was already over, so he just helped out the kids
Aww ok thanks
I've seen better quality local footy matches than that Rubbish. God help them when they play good teams
10 4 Pie Man , also have you put out your invites for your leagues yet ?
excited to see some rookie defenders put their hand up. Im sure there will be a few people changing their structures now.
Anyone else setting up the Sam Day & Mitch Brown (Ess) forward/defence swing set to start the season?
No.
Is it worth spending the cash on Hopper?
He would want to put in a darn good showing in NAB2 as there is a lot of viable choices at the $200K price tag for pure mids with Mills, Parish, Macaffer, Crowley etc and then Trengove, Gresham even cheaper.
There are even more options when you include the DPP boys so he has some stiff competition to remain fantasy relevant.
def; simpson, gibson, bartel, birchall, brown, hartley (hibberd, k.collins)
mid: pendlebury, gazza, selwood, rockliff, wines, libba, kerridge, gore (trnegove, mathieson, macpherson)
ruc; goldstein, lobbe (cox)
fwd: gunston, barlow, greene, stringer, menadue, petracca (kommer, grimley)
i have 91k in the bank and there are a couple of players im considering but i wasnt to impressed with wines yesterday so may look to replace him bu im not sure to whom, i am also looking to get another 500k+ fwd and have my eyes on rioli, wingard zorko and martin but i am open to options, and of course i am looking to try and get the best rookies so if any of you have tips it would be most appreciated.
Would consider downgrading Gibson to Smith and upgrading Lobbe to Gawn. Gunston, Selwood and Trengove all a bit iffy for Rd1. For Wines, consider Mitch Duncan, Todd Viney, Miles or Cripps.
Gibson has played a sort is sweeper role and creating of off hb so if he keeps it up he will be in my team and Smith hasn't performed and I think laird will replace birchall. Gawn is someone I'm trying hard to fit in and I can atm. I'm considering Sloan over wines because he has been tagged a couple times and done well and is consistent and I think he will be top 10. With Sellwood if he is in round 1 he is a lock and the other Sellwood is the one that is in doubt. Jelwood has done well with other players around him in his career like stokes Kelly Duncan bartel so I can't see him going any worse and I see him going 115. Fwds will probably change most and johanison is very tempting.
Gibo will play as the second tall more than likely behind Frawley unless Hawks plan on using another player as that second tall backman.
I know this is probably the wrong page , so apologies in advance. I have one spot left in my SuperCoach league. Anyone want to join , feel free. League number 193755. Thankyou
Anderson or Parish? I already have Mills as M8.
Parish, certainty to play and score well in the guts for Essendon
Young Tippa (McDonald-Tipungwuti) scored 49 and hasn't been mentioned in any posts. Anyone know what his role was? Did he play more defence or forward? The 49 points came from 5 Kicks 5 Handballs 3 Tackles 80% DE and played 2/3rds of the match. Not bad for a $102.4k Def/Fwd DPP. From all reports was very good in the two Essendon intraclub games and I am keen to see if he'll be getting a gig Rd 1 or at least early season??
How about Fantasia for a D4 option. starting to warm to him.
Here is my current team
B: Laird, Birchall, Yeo, _____, Broad, Brown(ess) (Hartley, Byrne)
C: Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Ablett, Rockliff, Wines, Libba, Gresham, Petracca (Freeman, Polikinghorne, Cuningham)
R: Martin, Lobbe (Grimley)
F: Martin, Barlow, Merrett, Simpkin, Cockatoo, Kerridge (Kommer, Adams)
Thoughts?
I have 700K left with 1 spot to fill in defence. Thinking of getting another Midfield premo
Surely your getting rid of Lobbe, did u see his performance on the weekend.
whats happening with arron francis
