Lekdog’s Check In – Captains
Look community I’m gonna be honest with you, this round has been rough. Not just because I’ll have a terrible score but also because I witnessed the great CJ crumble before my very eyes…I’m writing this through a few tears I can admit.
Now in my emotional state I don’t think I can logically pen a lengthy piece of writing containing all of the wisdoms you desire, or deserve. But I will do what I can…
So in my observations of this season I’ve seen some things and I think I’ve seen enough to make some bold calls.
Looking at the Supercoach scores from this year I can see a couple of trends. I believe (and I’m sure I’ll be corrected) that blowout games (31+ point wins) are bd for Supercoach captains. It looks like points are being spread out far more in blowouts and in particular our midfields aren’t scoring as well, we are getting maybe five 100-110 scores rather than one or two 140+ scores. The exception seems to be key position players like Buddy or JJK.
In close matches however (30 points and less), we are finding some massive scores. Dangerfield, Higgins, Goldstein and Mumford are just some examples from this round. It seems that close matches are creating more critical possessions and moments late in the game which really helps with the weighting of points.
What I’m trying to say is that when looking for a Supercoach captain we should look to competitive games rather than potential blowouts, or just pick Nat Fyfe every week #FyfeIsLife.

#FyfeIsLife – But I had the C on Tom Mitchell this round.
Vc on danger. Flirting with swanny but looks like im eating a donut this arvo, will win my leagues so think I’ll take the 130.
Thoughts on CEY, Miller and McIntosh to Dumont, Boston, Hodge
Terrible idea. Plus, not an appropriate forum for this question.
Ok Mark Jenkins… just looking for some advice mate
Mark Jenkins calm down please
Wtf dude.. since when did you run this forum?
Mark “Mr serious” Jenkins
Ball Mark
Have you missed boat on dumont? Took boston over him last round. Not sure if right yet but extra 30k handy.
settle down big boy
Mr Jenkins
Lekdog, Will your "Mo' Supercoach News" be back for the all important bye rounds?
Yeah mate I'll be putting one up tomorrow, just had to finish some assignments last week
Thanks, looking foward to it.
Out shopping for a Bowler too, I hope.
Very sad to see judd possibly finish his career in that manner. A true champion and future hall of fame legend I’d assume. I loopholed the vc on fyfe and the c on kennedy this week and it backfired big time. Have been loopholing all season but with fyfe generally captain. It has paid off most of the time (sloanes 2 big scores, pendles 158 both as vc) so I think I will continue with that strategy but not if fyfe is vc again. I won’t be as greedy and will take a 110 score from him next time. Just can’t trust the consistency of my other premos this year.
Funny to read this! I did exactly the same thing. Great minds…
We thought JPK could handle the responsibility of Captain. Obviously not this week. Fyfe seems to be the new Supercoach Gary Jr.
When selecting a C option, a hard nosed inside midfielder is best. These guys are a safe option, and usually are good for a ton at the very least barring a shocker. It would be a lot smarter though to experiment with a key forward or an outside midfielder as a VC option, as you always will have your trusty C option which is your Fyfe, Pendles, Beams variety.
Who's the best inside mid? Kennedy? Great captain option this year…
Danget?
Danger!
This hasn't worked well with the likes of Jelwood and Kennedy lately
I have been choosing the VC on an inside midfielder like Pendles, Wines, Hannebery, Parker, then chucking the captaincy on the Fyfe if it falls down. Vice Versa works well. This week I had Fyfe VC, then took Parker's upgrade as captain
You put the C on Parker, bold move, paid off. Wouldn't have been good if he scored another 60.
I didn't take Fyfe's score and took Selwood's score so i get it
Did the same, flirted with Gray lucky I didn’t.
@Lekdog Good point on the massive scores in close games
Lekdog,
Feel for you with Judd going down.
My team has also underperformed this week, looking like a sub 2000 score for the first time this season.
But chin up, have my bye strategy in place, and not going to dump under performers the week before the byes. It's time to play to he plan.
Watched Judd go down, and think it may assist Murphy in some weird way, as he is now he man. Also Kruzer looked good.
C’mon Cloke. Go huge today
You're in luck today Derek. He's flying right now.
Well he has to have 1 good game, I guess this is the one
Congrats on the comeback win today mate. Hogan's worst game of the season and the Cloke of Invisibility's best got you home in Eggs. Hopefully I get another crack at the Bunnies in the finals. š
I honestly didn’t deserve the win.
Nah that's the way the cookie crumbles so well played.
I'm actually surprised Clokey didn't score a little more than he did.
Hogan got me too. Had a 50 point lead with Hogan vs Oxley. #spewin
You got me too Derek. A lousy 6 points.
I saw that. I Had given up. Cloke to beat Hogan by 80 points was not likely.
I’ve had Cloke from round 1 and he finally paid off.
Only managed 2174. Will slip down rankings.
I can’t believe I beat Farros Flyers by 1 point.
Plus 10/10 league wins. More than half by less than 40pts.
Who would have thought Travis could have saved my weekend
You've been extremely patient with him. He had to pay you back at some stage. You're backbone should be inspirational to the coaches who want to dump premiums after a couple of bad games.
Hogan and Vandy onfield. Ouch!
A true champion of the game for sure. Also quite a handy ambassador for cardboard box sales by all accounts.
Fyfe, always, with the loophole option of a smokey, like bud
bloody hell i went oxley to hamling this week
Yeah I thought I was pretty clever going Oxley to Simpson this week ha ha.
I always marvel at opposition coaches who continue to allow these damaging plus 1s in defence to rack up huge numbers of intercepts and rebound ball. Great for those who kept the faith with the Ox though.
Pretty happy with myself in keeping Oxley, will give him the flick most likely Rd12
Scored 1943 this week…
2002 for me, with a donut on the field, 2 premos out and C on Gray.
Ouch. Somehow crawled to 2081 with a donut….
Newnes miller CEY griffen tarrant hogan TBC and mcintosh were my problems
If you were relying on those blokes to post you a score I’d look in the mirror to find your main problem š
good one mike
2217 – After much debating I decided to keep Oxley and Rockcliff, leaving me 21 trades to attack the byes.
Where abouts you ranked mate?
Absolute carnage for my team 1909 points, full team (no donuts), with bench options on all lines (except ruck).
Dropped ranking from about 4k to 9k, ouch
Goal climb back up the ranks to top 2k following byes.
I moved up 424 places so I'm ranked 1045…though I was as high as 560 after round 8
Ha, looks like i'm going the other way.
I dropped to 1315 and was as high as 280 after R6.
Funny when 2050 is enough to win 5/7 leagues. Got a few sneaky shark moves planned for the byes, looking forward to it
Should i get rid of tom rockliff?
Would wait a week for his bye and then get a status update on his return date. If it still looks like he's a month away you could then trade him for another Rd11 bye mid.
Agree,good advice
Yes get rid of him, Brissy will not make the same mistake twice by bringing him back early this time, they are no chance to make finals so why would they risk him? and when he does return expect a few slow games/ playing more forward time anyway so 4-6 weeks + possible couple games recovering forward anyway….why hold just to get 5-6 weeks of decent scores at end of year?
2331 kicks me from 251 overall all the way up to 88. Stoked! Shame I’ve only got 2 trades left lol
Way to go! Show us your team.
I’m sure you have more than 2 trades š
2 trades left huh? That's impossible, up until now the max amount of trades that could have been used is 21 with 9 remaining
Yep, 2 trades left and tony Lockett kicking goals for me up forward! Lighten up a little Shaun! And Derek team is thewinningchoice all one word, think i saw the binder a bunnies in one of my leagues.
I see you are hanging onto TBC as backup. I like how you have 6 DPP players in your forward line. Still a few cash cows to cull, team looking good.
Thanks Derek, feeling pretty good about it! Tough decision is going to be whether to keep bell or cash him in for that Suns 100k rookie ruck (can’t remember his name). Prefer the flexibility of belch as an r/f and good js but the 200k would be handy if that rookie keeps playing….
I don't really understand the bye scoring system. By 18 players does it mean only the highest 18 will score? So if that's true then everyone will be scoring a whole lot lower right? I would imagine that 2000 would be a great score during the bye rounds
Correct
Yes 1800 would probably be a decent score on average each bye round as you are having to play a few more rookies than you'd ordinarily field in a regular round and any outs or vests will hurt more than usual too.
Lek I feel for you re. Judd. Great player.
But am I bad for looking forward to your weekly vid because of it?
I expect to see you wailing in a black dress while scourging yourself.
people worried about doghnuts! what about Johnsons -3??
Johnson is my only trade for the week. It’s the rnd12 donuts I have to worry about so I’ll be bringing in a rnd 13 bye player. For mine, McGovern looks the best option.
Any word on podcast community?
Jock tweeted that the gang is having a podcast bye this week but he'll be back Thursday night.
The poor fella has had a bad run with the bug the last few weeks so hopefully he's back on his feet soon.
Thanks addict get well big fella
Long weekend bug? Lol
This weeks trades:
Goodes to kavanagh via mckenzie dpp
Heeney down to boston
CEY to wines
Only problem is that i have to hold rockliff
Is rockliff a must trade or should i do those??
Cheers community
No now that you've kept Rocky you may as well wait another week and then consider your options then.
Who knows he may make a miracle return in Rd12 although I reckon that's fairly unlikely given this is the second time this season he's busted those ribs. But hey stranger things have happened and the guy is harder than a cat's head as they say.
why kavanagh
Kavanagh looking like a solid pick if he can avoid the snot vest. A 77 in his first game for the year was promising, but I'll be sitting off him until after his bye to get one more look at him.
Is it possible to do cptains loop hole during bye rounds?
Yes
who are the best forward downgrade options this week
there are none
is krak playing again any time soon. if not is krak down to rookie like kavagnah and rocky or cey up to wines good?
Not sure about Krakouer, he wasn't in great form before he got demoted back to the rookie list so I'd probably look at trading him. Ellis-Yolmen can be traded this week, has a bye and with Brad Crouch dominating in the twos his JS now isn't great, especially given he was subbed on the weekend. Wines a good trade up option, no dramas there.
can anyone give me an update on tom rockliff?
second case of broken ribs, dont think they'll risk him like last time
Tommy Mitchell or Buddy for the last spot in my forward line?
Buddy because he's cheaper and has rock solid JS. Whilst Titch will very likely play the remaining 12 games it's not 100% ironclad like Bud. If he has a couple of quiet games or doesn't do what Horse wants him to there's a small chance he could return to the NEAFL again. For whatever reason Horse doesn't seem quite a Titch fan though no way could he be dropped on his current form.
Ideally you would want to bring these guys in after their bye although they will be a little more expensive if you wait that extra week.
Tommy for me. Dpp and surely not as hot cold? Worried bout leg injuries with both tho. Agree about js.
having the DPP for a fwd mid isnt really going to matter much especially if you already have gray, goddard or deledio
Buddy's BE is only 17 this week, this is the last chance you will have to get him under 500k for a while so Buddy for mine. Yes he has some hot and cold weeks but he looks like he's hitting some really good form – averaging 105 over the last three rounds. You will have to deal with the round 12 bye so if you can hold off until after his bye that might be ideal. It all depends on how much cash you have and your structures.
podcast tonight?? bueller??
Yeah why no podcast fellas š ?
Kavanah a good option this week? What rookies are on the bubble? I already have Boston. Too late for Dumont?
Not many rookies to choose from this week, Boston is the obvious one. Daniel Robinson from the Swans is a potential midfield rookie – he scored an 83 on debut but was the sub last week. Job security is the big risk there and considering the Swans played Carlton and GC they could have just been giving him a run. I think it's too late to jump on Dumont – personally I wouldn't be spending more than 150-160k on a rookie now.
Who is better option to bring in this week, Wines or Ebert? Similar prices and average.
I bought Wines in last week and thinking I will bring in Ebert this week after flicking the stain that is Ryan Griffen from my team. Considering their averages they are both super cheap – Ebert has only had three scores under 100 and one of those was a 99, so its pretty clear that even if the Power don't win he plays well. Wines is a safe pick and there will be lots of people jumping on him for their final teams, so he's probably preferred by most. If you're looking for a bit of a POD though, Ebert is your man.
Jezza, your opinion on selwood?
He had a poor start to the season by his standards but that 122 I think is a sign of things to come. According to Fantasy Freako on Twitter, he has averaged 121 and 125 in the last two seasons after round 10. I think he has virtually bottomed out (even though his BE is 91) and his round 13 bye is also handy. If you get him now you're locking in a big win over those coaches who picked him for their initial squads, which is what I'll be doing. Ellis-Yolmen up to Selwood for me.
thanks jezzalinko
Thanks Jezza – love the way Ebert is a tackling machine! Just hope he can end up around a top 8 mid.
He's certainly a unique pick, Bretto. One which I think is still flying under the radar. I'm not sure he can crack the top eight mids come seasons end, but i think he can certainly be inside the top 15-20.
What’s the go with the captain loophole this week? I assume your non playing player must not have the BYE? ie put the vc on gray Friday night. If he goes big put the C on Cox leaving goldy on the field and move Grundy onto the bench with an E?
I'm pretty sure your Non-playing player can be from a team having the bye. As long as they are on your field, you can put the C on them and take the VC score.
All bye players can be traded or subbed right up until the last game starts this Sunday at 4:40pm AEST but not a second later.
So no dramas planting the C on a bye player for captain loophole purposes if you want to double your pre-existing VC score.
Same deal for emergency loopholes if you happen to have a surplus player on a particular line in a given bye round.
So just when I thought I had my bye structures set for this first Bye round and the following ones Iāve been forced to deal my hand in trading, a few patch-ups are in order. So, in saying that, which of these combos looks the goods (really thinking about adding more Rd 13 bye players in order to cover myself for Rd 12):
Option 1:
M.Johnson ā Yeo
Rocky ā Wines
Option 2:
M.Johnson ā Higgins
Rocky ā Shiel/Treloar (if you guys pick this combo option, which of those two GWS midfielders looks a better option?)
Option 3:
M.Johnson – Higgins
Rocky – Wines
Cheers guys
š
Option 3
I don't mind option one. Yeo is playing a lot in the midfield and has had 5 scores over 80 in a row. The only concern is that his best and his worst performances are a long way apart. His lowest score for the year is 40-odd and his highest was 140+. Wines is a safe pick and one I think a lot of people will jump on. Option one or three for mine.
Option 1
As downgrade targets, does Hamling or Clurey have better job security?
Hamling. Trengove could be back next week which would see Clurey drop out of the side.
Thoughts on a Rd 13 bye Def? Was looking at Enright or Kelly from the cats?
McDonald best defender atm but he's a KPP so be weary. Higgins, Shaw, Yeo all in fine form
looking for same … mcg is other option but tmac for me of a thin bunch … most good defs have r11 bye
Hi Guys can you trade a player with a bye this wk mid round or does it need to be before the round commences? Cheers
All Good,It depends who you are trading in, as long as the game hasn't started.
cheers yeah i knew re. player trading in was just concerned on the lockout for players with a bye trading out
You can trade Rd11 bye players (either in or out) right up to final lockout at 4:40pm AEST this Sunday. You can also make them your C up til this time for captain's loophole purposes too.
Thoughts on Kavanah?
Solid but JS is weak with Watson to return
selwood vs wines
Wines until Selwood fines some real form
Sellwood 122 last round
Selwood has averaged 121 & 125 post round 10 in the last two seasons. I think we saw the start of his run on the weekend with 122. In terms of value Selwood is cheap as chips, but both are good selections.
I'm downgrading Krak to Boston this week which leaves me with 250K. Which of the following three should I upgrade to Buddy: Salem, Tarrant or Clark? Also, Selwood is priced at 490K this week. Should I upgrade Rich to Selwood this week or wait and go for either Hanners, Danger or Priddis? Thanks for all the help!
Community.
Would you rather:
-Cockatoo to Boston (for cover) OR
-Cox to Brooksby (just in case one of my rucks is a late out in the long run)
I am tossing up same thing with cox/brooksby. I have stef and goldy. Both workhorses and could play out year with byes only break? Worried about brooksby js and probably better trading to a mummy sauce nic nat if one goes down hard. I keep coming back to being a burnt trade? Thoughts
True true. I have goldy and Nic Nat who is injury prone. But say your in finals and Goldy is a late withdrawal before the game, Brooksby could be your 50 or so points contribution to the winning margin. So…
I have thought about it, but have always said that I will run with only two rucks (No TBC in fwd) and if one goes down or cant play for a week, I would trade. So far Goldy and Sauce have not missed a game. I would prefer getting in a premium to replace one of my missing rucks so I don't just get 50 points. I want maximum out of my rucks.
I would hold the trade and use it later when you really need it.
Yeah its a tough one. I have been machine gunnin through my trades tho so will probably take my chances!
So boston here steveo
thoughts on Motlop?
Stevie has never averaged anything over 80 in his past 5 seasons. Couple low scores this year of 26 and 70, but if they aren't taken into account his average is 97. Could this be the year he steps into Supercoach premium status?
With Rockliff coming back round 13 at earliest. Should I stick with my original plan of going cripps to selwood or trade rockliff to selwood to have a bit more cover?
If you care more about overall ranking then go rockliff but if you care more about winning your league rockliff will be a good POD to have for finals because lots of people have traded him
ok thanks
Thoughts on my team. 19 trades with over 100k in the bank
Simpson, Shaw, Gibson, Newnes, McIntosh, Saad, Hamling, Lever
Fyfe, Selwood, JPK, Parker, Beams, Treloar, Rocky, Miller, CEY, McKenzie, Steele
Goldstein, Maric, Read
Gray, Martin, Swan, Franklin, Tarrent, Clark, Hogan, Lonie
Was thinking going triple downgrade this week….
McIntosh to Goddard
CEY to Boston
Hogan to Kavanah via Steele DPP.
So next week I can go
Saad to Hodge
Miller to Danger
Clark/Tarrent to Dalhaus
Thoughts?
Hi Harry,
Just a couple of things to keep in mind. I reckon Mc Kintosh to Goddard is a tick. CEY to Boston is risky IMO, as he could be named straight after the bye after a rest and continue to score well. He may have simply been subbed out because of a little niggle in his last match.
Trading out Hogan may also be a bit pre mature after a poor game against the pies. The Dees have the Saints this week, and I am expecting him to bounce back hard. He is that kind of player who revels a contest.
Just my take,
Cheers
Thanks TopHawk! Love that you took the time to reply. What trades would you suggest I make this week? McIntosh to Goddard is locked, my only problem with CEY is high breakeven, but I can go Miller to Boston, but that will limit my scoring this week. What about, Tosh to Goddard, Clark to Dale? Or do you have any trades you could suggest?
Anyone know what Jock is ranked overall? Would love to know!
Triple downgrade this week of:
Hogan, CEY and Krak
to
Dale, Boston and Kavanagh
Leaving me with 660k for next round. Thoughts community?
Yeah good trades exept I'm not confident in kavanagh
Solid 919k ready for 6 tasty upgrades next few rounds
