NAB Supercoach Significance Report – CARL v GEEL
Geelong went in full strength, Carlton were missing a few guns & fantasy coaches everywhere panicked when they saw Bartel named sub – but rest easy folks – he won’t start sub in season proper.
The game started almost ping-pong like. Blues kicked forward – Geelong rebounded and kicked forward, only for Blues to clear and repeat. Eventually young Menzel snagged a nice super-goal and the dam walls burst. The cats pulled out to a 5 goal lead, but the blues pegged them back and a relatively even match ensued. For a bonus to Carlton – Judd looks to have wound the clock back. In the end though; Carlton were missing 6 players from their A-team and the cats won by 19 points.
Absent Best 22 Players
Carlton: Yarran, Kreuzer, Simpson, Gibbs, Walker, Casboult
Geelong: Essentially Best 22 on-field.

Noteworthy Performances:
- Patrick Cripps (MID, $211,400) – Lock him in Eddie! The highest possession getter today. Has shown us this pre-season that he has turned up to play. Seems to be Judd’s heir-apparent. Their new extractor. I still think he is a vest risk though (he bloody shouldn’t after today!). Could kick more and use it better, but for 211k – he gets the ball plenty enough to make us the coin we need. LOCK. Finished with 32 disposals at 62.5% efficiency, 6 marks (1 contested), 4 tackles, 5 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50 and 1 goal 1 for 119 Supercoach Points.
- Chris Judd (MID, $486,900) – Seriously considering Cee-Judd as my M7 – in the hope he starts well and averages 105+ and in the process making me some money to move on to an ultra-premium. Looks to have wound back the clock, bursting from packs and running out games. At 486k, he’s under-priced. Was subbed out at 3QT with 18 Disposals at 61.1% efficiency, 2 marks (1 contested), 1 tackle, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50’s and 2 rebound 50’s.
- Joel Selwood (MID, $649,900) – Did what Selwood does best – Ducked. No, in all seriousness, he just dug in, extracted the pill and tackled. Spotted Carrazzo running off him a few times, but don’t think he was seriously tagging him. You know what you get with Selwood. Currently locked in my Midfield. Finished with 28 Disposals at 71.4% efficiency, 1 mark, 6 tackles, 8 clearances, 2 inside 50’s, 1 rebound 50 and a goal for 111 Supercoach points.
- Nakia Cockatoo (Mid, $177,300) – Did some nice things and set up a nice goal. This guy will be something. If he plays, he’s a big vest candidate. At 177k, he will generate cash – but there is a decent assortment of rookies to pick from at a cheaper price, pass for me. Finished with 7 disposals at 100% efficiency, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50’s and a goal.
- Troy Menzel (FWD, $272,400) – Carlton’s Chad Wingard (minus the exuberant marking, so far). Very good goal-sneak that can run through the guts – roosted a super-goal early in the piece, got into it a bit, but I’d want more from a 272k player. Nice to watch – but the awkward price has me put off. Finished with 14 disposals at 50% efficiency, 8 marks (1 contested), 3 tackles, 2 inside 50’s, 1 super-goal and 2 goals 2.
- Mitch Clark (FWD, $155,200) – Was barely sighted in the first quarter, he had Jacksch keeping him company most of the game. Took some great marks, kicked a few goals – did what we want from a rookie priced player. Also played a bit in the ruck – getting 9 hitouts. Locked in for mine. Massive ceiling and excellent JS – Everything you need. His game finished with what looked like a dislocated finger – but he should be ok for round 1. Finished with 11 disposals at 72.7% efficiency, 3 marks (2 contested), 4 tackles and 3 goals 1 for 97 Supercoach Points.
- Blaine Boekhorst (DEF, $132,300) – Didn’t really do much. I don’t think I spotted him all game. He may not even get a gig early. Pass for mine. Finished with 7 disposals at 85.7% efficiency, 1 mark, 1 tackle and a clearance for 25 Supercoach Points.
- Dale Thomas (FWD/MID, $406,600) – Unlike Higgo – I’m not excited by his prospects. Maybe it’s my bitterness as a Collingwood supporter, but what I do know is he won’t be a top 10 forward. Because of this; he’ll need to be a stepping stone player. He’ll need to average 85+ just to make 50k – but that’s just my opinion. Did a little bit today, kicked a goal and ran around a bit. Finished with 18 disposals at 72.2% efficiency, 4 marks, 0 tackles and 1 rebound 50.
- Jimmy Bartel (FWD $549,000) – Started as sub and still did wonders. A solid pick for F1 this year I think. “Junk-time” Jimmy was subbed on after half-time and remarkably finished with 22 disposals at 86.4% efficiency, 6 marks, 2 tackles and 3 inside 50’s for 92 Supercoach points from only 47% ToG.
- Harry Taylor (DEF, $446,900) – Played majority back, but I did see him kick towards goal a few times. With the options provided to us down back, Taylor finds himself as a relevant mid-price option this year. Didn’t disappoint. Finished with 21 disposals at 90.5% efficiency, 10 marks, 2 tackles, 3 inside 50’s and 4 rebound 50’s.

Cripps going to be in 50% + teams because of those 32 touches.
Did Gibbs play?
Mitch Clarks average game today community,
I’ll cop a 97 average for a $155,000 prospect every day of the week
I have him in my team and on the ground.I will take that score every week.Just wish he was named as a ruckman as well as a forward.
Stop trolling jim.
Cripps a lock and a half
Thoughts on Blicavs?
better ruck options, i suggest going expensive, nic nat at cheapest in the ruck
I reckon he is good as he probably won't play ruck a whole lot this year with Clark and Dawson, I think he'll play a nice defensive role which sees him get a fair share of footy
^^By defensive I mean a running half-back type, not lockdown type
Will burn you I think, too much of a utility man
Am thinking very hard as my second ruckman.
So am I
No mention of Mitch Duncan. Guess i will be the only person to pick him
hard to pick over swallow and griffin
Averaged 100 last year didn't he? Solid POD
Bartel + Selwood + Clark = Locks
Second that
cripps is a lock
clark is a lock
bartel is a lock
what do you guys think about coery enright and james kelly? what did they score today?
I reckon they would've been around 70-80, no truth to that, just an estimate.
Kelly 106. Not sure about enright
Enright has unfortunately played his way out of my team, I think Taylor is the option now
Taylor my second Defensive LOCK behind Newnes in my team. Cripps also LOCKED
love kelly, running more in the guts 71% TOG for 104pts
11 contested gets
enright 89
Excellent Dex. Hard not to pick Cripps after that. Could be the Tyson Polec type this year. Liked a few things Clem Smith did. He’s going to be a very good player.
Choose 2:
Rich, Newton, Cripps
Rich & Cripps
Newton dosnt look as good as everybody says
I am axing Newton to Keep Wells and Cripps..
Wells VS Rich?
flip a coin mate, id go Rich ,but i don't have either
newton cripps
Great article Dex. Cripps is a lock for me. Judd at m7 is going deep Dex you must be going shallow in other lines how is your structure looking?
Was thinking the same! M7 is dangerous considering how many good rookies are floating around to gather coin this season in the midfield imo.
yes, thinkin the same ?? seriously i think he is a huge injury risk with others at a similar price that i would rather go for
I've seen his team and community it is truly a thing of beauty
C smith do enough to get a game you think ? Goes past boekhorst surely …
Will get a look ahead of Tutt but I think Ellard will come in and take his position
Devo already have all these guys who performed now everyone will
who should I pick out of
cripps, newton, biggs, and heeney
I need 2 of them
cripps and newton. BANG BANG!!
judd at m7? Are you kidding? Surely you need to utilise more rookie mids
With the forward and defensive rookies we have I think we'll find a lot of teams don't field a player below 200k in the mids
Newton, or Cripps? Or both?
I have them both, both should avoid the vest and score well
what role did james kelly play, did he play through the midfield?
Some defensive stuff but mostly ran through the mids
Any reason why nobody is hyping Harry Taylor as a value pick? He's scored over 100 in the last 3 NAB games (albeit they are NAB games)
From memory he was amongst the highest scoring defenders last year as well. Solid pick. The odd game he gets a shut down role and goes missing is the only knock for me.
In my side over Enright
Decisions decisions decisions…. Gibson or Kelly for my D2.
Gibson
Where did Kelly play? Pure mid? Mid/Back? Pure Back?
Basically pure mid
Great write up Dex! Just wondering is there going to be a significance report for the GWS Vs. Sydney game, would be interesting to see what you guys think about the game. Thanks.
Had some technical issues but working to get it up properly
Bartel or Goddard??
lids
Lycett attended 22 ruck contests to nic nat 13 in the first half, courtesy of fantasy freako #significant
better options than both? or you suggesting Lycett as R2?
I'm sticking with nic nat at R2, i'm not going to change my mind over 1 game. I know what he can achieve.
I'm pretty sure everyone knows what he can achieve mate, it's just wether he is 100 % fit… If his back is still annoying him then maybe Lycett or other rucks are a better option. If I know for a fact he is over his injuries and is 100 % fit! he would be one of the first players selected in my team with out a doubt…. WELKUM!
I currents have Lycett as my R2, he had a good average last year when Cox didn’t play
What time is the PODCAST on? Nearly past my bloody bedtime….. Come on lads hurry up!
Is it worth going from rich to Newton and have cripps and newton as M6 and M7, in order to upgrade KK at M4 to Gibbo at M2?
KK and Gibbo as defenders not MIds
How’d Jaksch go? Score?
He was 100% focused on stopping the two Geelong key forwards. Did a fair job considering, and wasn't Carltons worst by any stretch. WILL PLAY, but don't expect decent scores when he is forced to play lockdown roles like he did last night
Would you say then Henderson will have a better scoring output than Jaksch if he plays that lock down roll? I actually haven't seen much of henderson this nab, somehow was off my radar however I'm noticing his scores now and he is a tempting prospect..
Most definitely. I've cooled on Jaksch, as I think Saad/Edwards/McIntosh will all score just as well at $150k less. Hendo is a rebounding playmaker, but would wont be tagged like Brodie Smith is likely to be. Expect a solid 85+ average if he stays on the park
As a blues man I’ve had crippa all along, but honestly dex are you really considering Judd considering for a bit more you could get Swallow, Crouch, Wines, Griffen or Cotchin. Love juddy but no from an sc point of view
Kelly or Taylor?
Thoughts on Lumumba the prince community? Do you guys reckon he will reach an average of 90?
Yes. Watched all the Melbourne games closely and he is the real deal. He's even been attending some center stoppages and is a natural contested ball clearance player.
No mention of Ciaran Byrne? Had 73 SC. Will he make it for R1? DPP…$123K. Yummy.
I noticed him Throtts, I noticed 😉
He’s a rookie and a fair bit further down the pecking order at the blues than blokes like Wood, Sheehan and Johnson
Cripps or Newton
Cripps ALL DAY LONG
Guthrie anyone? He killed Carlton all over the ground…
Thoughts on Cameron Wood community? What did he score against Geelong? I currently have Goldstein as my R1 but really contemplating on having C. Wood as my R2….. I'm assuming that he will be Carlton's number one ruckman this year and finished the year of last year strongly averaging 80+. Feed back would be greatly appreciated….
Will Mcintosh from Richmond play Round 1?
won't know until teams are announced
