NAB Supercoach Significance Report – ESS v STK

Published by Lekdog on

LekdogA strange game.

Hard to know what to take out of this game community…

St Kilda looked good but who were they playing? Hard to know if their good performers will keep it up against tougher opposition, on the plus side St Kilda fans got to see a high scoring St Kilda win a game.

A poor Essendon VFL side showed up today and effectively got smashed. Two of their best players on the day were Brown and Marigliani who aren’t even AFL players. If Essendon receives any bans at least we know which rookies to select…

Absent Best 22 Players

Essendon: Effectively their entire list.

St Kilda: Billings, Fisher, Gilbert, Ray, Riewoldt

St Kilda Analysis:

  • Steven, Jack (MID $455,900) looked quick breaking away from packs and getting some clearances, one of the best on the ground. Worth pondering.
  • Montagna, Leigh (MID $480,300) had a lot of the ball over the ground, found himself in defense a lot. Slightly underpriced but with so many other midfielders to choose from it’d be hard to select him.
  • Ross, Seb (MID $317,100) had a good pre-season from all reports and looked good today… until he did his hammy. If he is fit there are still better value players around his price.
  • Dunstan, Luke (MID $400,800) doesn’t look like the second year blues will hit him, if you want a midprice midfielder he could be your man.
  • Acres, Blake (MID $220,700) had a very good game, got better as the game went on and showed that he can keep up at AFL level. Prefers to kick, which is a tick.
  • McCartin, Paddy (FWD $222,300) young key position player and looked like one. Not worth his price tag, better options available in the fwd line.
  • Saad, Ahmed (FWD $151,100) touched it 10 times but didn’t take advantage of his attempts at goal. Has potential but needs to do more to be elevated into St Kilda’s senior side.
  • Membrey, Tim (FWD $172,000) got enough of it to excite St. Kilda fans but needed to kick straight. Had some bad misses but pushed up the ground. With Saint Nick back in the team Membrey will likely play deeper up fwd and probably won’t increase in cash enough for him to be a good selection.
  • Geary, Jarryn (DEF $332,400) was one of the better players for the Saints and is shaping up to be a reasonable selection in our teams. Will be a choice between one of Geary, Newnes and Fisher for most, not sure our defensive lines can hold multiple Saints.
  • Newnes, Jack (DEF/MID $436, 800) 21 disposals and 6 marks. If the last two weeks haven’t sold him I don’t know what will.
  • Goddard, Hugh (DEF $122,300) the main thing is that he played. Took a few good marks and had a 9 disposals. If he keeps getting named then he may prove vital for our backline bench.
  • Lonie, Jack (FWD $117,300) staked his claim for a small forward/ midfield role today. Could be a better option for our fwd bench than Saad.

Essendon Listed Players Analysis:

Almost everyone who played for Essendon is NOT in their best 22. I have reviewed each player who is currently on their senior list, if Essendon are hit with bans we can consider some of these young players.

  • McKenna, Conor (MID $102,400) had 6 touches, nothing to write home about.
  • Gleeson, Martin (MID $292,300) one of the better Bombers, 20 touches. Awkward price for the midfield.
  • O’Brien, Nick (MID $123,900) had 2 games in 2012 and 3 in 2013. Had 22 touches and might get his 4 games in 2014.
  • Kavanagh, Elliot (MID $145,100) BJ talked him up before the game, could be an ok midfield selection if named round one.
  • Merrett, Jackson (FWD/MID $317,100) was probably Essendon’s best. Had 27 touches but 19 were handballs. If he keeps up this form might be worth looking at him for a forward spot.
  • Giles, Jonathan (RUC $396,600) will be playing as a forward behind Bellchambers. If Bellchambers goes down with injury (suspension) then Giles should be looked at as a potential midprice R2. Kicked 3 goals.
  • McKernan, Shaun (FWD/RUC) might occasionally pinch hit in the ruck but will have to contend with Essendon’s plethora of talls to get a spot in the best 22.
  • Chapman, Paul (FWD $516,000) captained the side and acted like a captain. Ran hard and got a fair bit of the ball. Not sure his output will be enough to warrant selection. Unless bans hit he won’t play every game especially with the addition of Cooney who will fill a similar role.
  • Langford, Kyle (FWD $142,300) talked about a lot this preseason but didn’t show too much. Very solid tackler though, had 5.
  • Edwards, Shaun (DEF $123,900) played off half back in the first half and then played deep forward in the second. Probably the most exciting Essendon rookie today, consider for backline.
  • Dalgleish, Lauchlan (DEF $145,100) played 3 games in 2013 but with just 11 disposals today doesn’t look likely to break into Essendon’s best 22.
  • Long, Jake (DEF $102,400) if promoted off rookie list he might be worth looking at but still hasn’t quite got the body for AFL.

Over to you community – what significance did you extract from the game?

Hey mate, Dunstan is just a MID.

Thanks, fixed up

Luenberger or Bellchambers?

Super coach wisdom needed.

Neither injury prone. THey are cheap for a reason! DOnt get sucked in

I was quite keen on Leuenberger but looking at alternatives after his first two NAB performances. Can always go downgrade to him before Round 1 if circumstances and form changes.

Bellchambers is too risky for mine. Don't get to see any live footage of his pre season, and has an injury riddled history. Very much Risk vs Reward with him.

Right now looking away from both of them.

Belch…cheaper and not as injury prone as it would seem… behind Ryder and Hille 'til last year – then injured… not a big follower of Ess so if anyone can remember back then, was he injured or just squeezed out (2013 and before)?

and Tassie boy!

So if you have picked them because they are cheap and you want to stack your mids…………………
With little in-depth thought or research………………
But hey you have plenty of trades, 4 trades and you can sell some mids and get some good rucks

Rookie problems maybe fixed from a unlikely source, may we have peace with Essendon and get some knowledge asap on these rookies please 🙂

Agreed Carla

Mid pricer frenzy down back and guns and rookis in the guts with solid rucks followed by guns and rookies in fwd line

Hope it looks like this with some discount prices of course

2– ( no fooling around in the rucks this year will prove vital )

Leaves 7 to upgrade to premium this year instead of my usual 6 but hope that 2 of the 3 backline midpricers are keepers, fingers crossed!
What's an acceptable average for our mid priced defenders? 80+?

80+ might be enough for Clancee but I'd be hoping for 85+ from the Henderson, Geary, Ibbotson price range. Newnes needs to be 90+

Agreed Carla. That's exactly my thinking for rucks and mids. Might go 1-4-2 in the backs and 3-0-3 up front.

fuqmah faic

What do these numbers mean please??

Premiums – Mid Priced – Rookies filling the starting spots

Anything above 450k a premo ?

Only for backline

Seen some cracking comments from you lately, carla. Keep it up!

And thanks for the review Lek! Nearly as impressive as that mo'! Like the extended list of players reviewed

How did Shenton play. $315k well priced?

I’m keen on both Wines and Gray but worried about Ports tough start so probably only start reason with one. But which one?

I'd start with wines, Gray is probably more likely to drop in price due to his high cost price, then you can grab him cheaper later on

What kind of average are you guys expecting from Wines?

Expect a steady climb to 105 110 max I would think. Though Ports draw could see him only average mid 90's after 5

Say, increases ave to 105……i'd then think better options in Ryan Griffen and Andy Swallow, and even Jack Steven at 80K less.

I agree plus Port have many players who get midfield time, think that's why they don't have an ultra premo mid player because the engine room is huge

I N Pieman

Didn’t get to see any games yesterday so your report is very significant Lek. Appreciated. Was interested to hear about Newnes Geary Edwards & Goddard. All relevant for defence this season. Might end up with all of them. When I looked though the bombers line up it was the who’s who of who are you!

Pieman I watched the entire game VERY closely. A few points I took out of it:
*Goddard: far exceeded expectations. was used as a link up switch player on a few occasions. Looked good.
*Geary is a butcher by foot. That worried me… Accumulated most of his points late when Essendon were cooked.
*Acres..see above re Geary^. Still cheap tho, and looked much better after half time like Lek said.
*Newnes: bona fide midfield role, moves well, and is a lock.
*Jason Ashby (Ess) looked likely. $220k. Worth keeping a close eye on.

Add Membrey to the Butchers list.

Wouldn't get a game at many other clubs.

King Menace

Thoughts on Hampton as F4?

Think you mean D4. But looked good yesterday. He will be one of many mid priced Defenders to consider, just gotta pick the right ones

Beautiful ball user and makes great decisions.

Hey guys do you think I should keep Jarred Pickett in the forward line?

Suggestions please

King Menace

He is priced awkwardly. Better blokes down there mate.

Hey everyone,

on a different subject, does anyone know where it shows the breakdown of your players in the bye rounds?
I am sure last year on Supercoach there was somewhere, but cant seem to find it!
Thanks in advance.

If you have subscribed to SC Gold it should be in the SC Gold Analyser

I see you didn’t mention jason ashby in your review, trying to keep the boy quiet at 220k?

He looked very likely didn't he Rhys?

Haha sorry mate, must've missed him

Laverde should be in next game, minor issue according to the team doc on their web page March 2.

pauly walnuts

thanks Mike ,i have him my team ATM and I was wondering why he wasn't playing

Steven/Prestia vs wines/rich what should they all average

Rich, i'd say 85.

Steven….anywhere from 95 to 105.

Haven't looked at the other two. Not on my radar.

Interested to know if anyone is considering Tom Hickey as a mid price ruck. Started last year nicely before injuries got him.

Thoughts on having Sam Jacobs & Stefan Martin in the ruck?
