PODCAST: Round 18 Community Night podcast

Supercoach 2014

Enter Ross Lyon.

This is the time of year he just steps right up a gear. Sandilands in being rested, and that leaves about 4 out of every 5 teams with an issue this week.

As the leader of this community I made the executive decision to open this edition of the community night podcast with an open letter to Ross Lyon on behalf of the community. High bloody time that bloke received a firm message re: his actions towards the end of seasons and I believe I’m the bloke to deliver it to him.

Enjoy the show community – big split round!

BCHawks · 17/07/2014 at 21:15

Great stuff once again Jock, What are your thoughts on Shenton to Caddy this week?

@lewiswgrant · 17/07/2014 at 21:19

Traded in Brown to allow dpp for Martin from Fwds to substitute Sandi- don't rate Lyon. All trades done and dusted.

Blake · 17/07/2014 at 21:21

Sam Mitchell or Kade Simpson?

    BCHawks · 17/07/2014 at 21:22

    jockreynolds · 17/07/2014 at 21:23

    Mitchell mate

      Blake · 17/07/2014 at 22:00

Would u rather have boomer in ur team or Mitchell? Thinking of either getting in a strong forward or defence?
Def: swallow, mcveigh, Hanley, bartel, malceski, 'Mitchell'

Fwds: dangerfield, Parker, d.martin, Gray, zorko, 'boomer'

        Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 22:07

Depends who your other defenders and forwards are.

If you dont have Mitchell, who will be your D6, and if you dont get Harvey, who will be your F6?

        pete · 17/07/2014 at 22:59

North have easier run . But if you have a couple trades left boomer is consistent . Have you considered dalhlaus cheap ffw option . If you dont have him

James · 17/07/2014 at 21:39

Good stuff jock!
Have a quick question, M Murphy or Stevie j?

    Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 22:10

    Stephen Johnson

Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 21:41

Hello Community,

I have looking for a league win (from my 4 teams, who will all finish in the finals). I am going to win in all 4 leagues this week regardless of what trades I do or dont do this week.

My team is-

Def – Swallow, Malceski, McVeigh, Hanley, Enright, Firrito (Shoenmakers, Tippett)
Mid – Pendlebury, Priddis, D.Beams, Cotchin, Bartel, D.Martin, Johnson, Goddard (Miles, Acres)
Ruck – Sandilands, Naitanui (Lycett, Lobb)
Fwd – Dangerfield, Gray, Zorko, Dahlhaus, Franklin, Roughead (S.Lloyd, Shenton)

I have 4 trades and just $20,500 in the chest. Have my swing sets in place, and bench over on each line.

I have 3 alternatives that I am considering at this time-

1. No trades this week
2. Shoenmakers & Shenton for S.Mitchell & Honeychurch (leaving $106.1k & 2 trades)
3. Miles & Schoenmakers for Rockliff (via Bartel swing) and Honeychurch (leaving $15.7k & 2 trades)

Love the communities thoughs. Thanks in advance

    Garglesnarf FC · 18/07/2014 at 08:15

    Hi Donovan,

I reckon Option 1 at this stage. Mitchell is worth considering but you dont have any holes to fill, with the possible exception of Sandi. Given you should win all your leagues, I would hold fire and see what the injury gods dish out over this round.

      Donavan · 18/07/2014 at 08:41

      Thanks Garglesnarf,

I'm going to resist trading this round. I will probably do the option 3 trade next round if I have no other trades forced upon my team through injury/suspension.
Also happy with my ruck coverage Lycett has been very good recently.

      Thanks again.

        big aggots · 18/07/2014 at 16:23

Garglesnarf as usual with the right advice. Hold fire

Kev · 17/07/2014 at 22:11

5 trades, 170k in the bank
Def – D.Swallow, J.McVeigh, J.Bartel, M.Jaensch, P.Hanley, M.Hibberd (J.Bews, T.Clurey)
Mid – S.Pendlebury, J.Selwood, T.Liberatore, R.Sloane, D.Beams, N.Fyfe, D.Mundy, C.Wingard (L.Taylor, B.Acres)
Ruc – A.Sandilands, S.Martin (M.Pyke, D.Currie)
Fwd – P.Dangerfield, L.Parker, D.Martin, L.Breust, M.Pavlich, J.McGovern (C.Cameron, S.Kersten)

What trades to do this week?
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated

    john · 17/07/2014 at 22:34

upgrade wingard to midfielder of your choice and downgrade taylor to honeychurch

    Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 22:38

I would trade McGoven to Matthew Boyd (via swing of Wingard to fwd line)

      Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 22:42

or Lewis Taylor to Stevie J

Matt · 17/07/2014 at 22:32

I have 7 trades left and $537,700 in the bank. My team is
Bartel, Simpson, Jaensch, Birchall, Suckling, McDonald (Bews, Jones)
Selwood, Sloane, Beams, Murphy, D.Thomas, Griffen, Aish, Dunstan (Taylor, J.Martin)
Cox, Ceglar (Sandilands, Brown)
Dangerfield, Parker, D.Martin, Zorko, Roughead, Wingard (Ambrose, Cameron)
Any suggestions?

    pete · 17/07/2014 at 22:54

Thomas to kennedy . Dunston or aish to boyd /s mitchell /boomer you have plenty of options you could go

The Vampire · 17/07/2014 at 22:39

it says sandi has done his back- now could be the time to trade if you suspect he will be out for 4 weeks. we know what happened when mumford did his back

    medadsson · 18/07/2014 at 23:10

There is a difference between a legitimate back injury and the ailment known as Lyons Back which is a unique injury suffered by those coached by Ross this time of year.

Turls · 17/07/2014 at 23:06

Hey guys.

6 trades left, Sitting 4th in my league.
Thinking of bringing in Mitchell. But should I?

DEF: Swallow, Burgoyne, Hanley, Hibberd, Johnson, Enright) – Gardiner/May as cover
MID: Pendle, Selwood, Sloane, Dal Santo, Beams, MMurphy, Greenwood, Miles) – Shenton/Acres as cover
RUC; Jacobs/Martin (Sandi, Currie)
FWD: Boomer, Dangerfield, Parker, DMartin, Dahlhaus, McGovern (Honeychurch, Thurlow)

Obviously forced to play McGovern after switching Martin into the RUC. So if I bring in Mitchell it means sitting a decent DEF on the bench, or a decent MID on the bench… Would be for Shenton, so loses me a FWD/MID swing (but opens up a DEF/MID swing, albeit with decent players rather than rookies.

    Garglesnarf FC · 18/07/2014 at 08:21

If you brought him you can still rotate May fwd, Mitchell back and Honeychurch into the middle, so I dont think you lose anything.

Rayza Ray · 17/07/2014 at 23:32

Just a quick one anyone… C.Ward or B.Harvey into the mids. Bloody appreciated anyones thoughts.

Thanks Lads.

    Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 23:56

Like Harvey's next few weeks, expect him to go big.

    @Rem_Wah · 18/07/2014 at 00:54

They've both been excellent, although Ward is just a guaranteed ton every week.
Don't think you can go wrong with either.

    @Rem_Wah · 18/07/2014 at 01:00

This is how I see it:
Harvey: Riskier, better ability to go ham
Ward: Safer, more consistent, points in the bank

    Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 09:45

    I'd go Ward.

      Rayza Ray · 19/07/2014 at 00:26

Thanks Lads appreciate your expertise and insight.

Jimmy Columbine · 17/07/2014 at 23:41

Get me in your league Jock. top 7% so far this year. Looking to improve. Put too much time into the silly game.
Jimmys Juggernauts

@TheNoLanguage · 17/07/2014 at 23:54

Guys I have a dilemma..

I still have Wingard in my team but am worried if I trade him out this week he'll destroy Melbourne. I also only have four trades and 130k in the bank. Do I go Shenton > Morabito and Wingard > Luke Parker or hold my nuts?

    Donavan · 17/07/2014 at 23:58

    Hold trades.

Wingard could score big this week.

If you had 6 trades I would have recommended you trade.

    Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 09:26

@Rem_Wah · 18/07/2014 at 00:50

Hey guys
What's the best sideways trade for Andrew Walker in your opinion's????????????
(Would rather go sideways than upgrade as I want to upgrade Martin to Dusty next week).
Thanks for the help.
Def: Mitchell, Hanley, Mcveigh, R. Murphy, Walker, Suckling (Bews, Fuller)

    Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 09:43

    Burgoyne? Dunn? Mackie?

Jarrod05 · 18/07/2014 at 06:11

How long is Sandilands out for?

    Garglesnarf FC · 18/07/2014 at 08:23

He is listed as 1 week.

    big aggots · 18/07/2014 at 09:59

The inclusion of Griffin is a real worry. If he performs then I can see Lyon nursing Sandi along until the finals. I'm doing S.Martin to R2 via Thurlow and thinking it's time to thank Sandi for his services.

john · 18/07/2014 at 06:46

Hi Community – I have lots of coverage issues this split round and need some help.

Shenton was my cover in the midfield but has been dropped. He is also dual position so I could swing him to the forward line to create cover on both lines should someone else get named in the second week of the bye round which is a possibility. Can you still switch a dual position player in the second week of this round to another line if their team has already played in the first week?

e.g. saints play this week I leave him in the midfield on the bench. Then if Charlie Cameron is named and there is an unexpected drop out in the midfield can I swap Shenton with Patrick Dangerfield in the second week even though the saints have already played?

    jason · 18/07/2014 at 08:14

    no john, you can't

jordan · 18/07/2014 at 08:13

hey community. do you think it is worth trading sandilands to another premium, or trading my back up ruck to cameron wood just for this week. Thanks

    Donavan · 18/07/2014 at 08:19

I would hold Sandi, I expect him to come back rested, and score well.

    Peter · 18/07/2014 at 09:40

Might as well trade Sandi to another premium such as Mumford if you are going to waste a trade

Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 09:29

OK. Sandi is out. I don't have ruck coverage and 4 trades left. I'm not keen on burning trades BUT I could trade out Sandi for Mummy. Then continue on my merry way with Lobbe and Mummy in the ruck. Thoughts?
Alternatively, risk it and play a man down. I still could win.
Bloody Lyon.

    wes · 18/07/2014 at 10:42

you almost in same boat as me there… I had some cover though, as below shows.
Lobbe and mummy make a good pairing.
considering you don't have coverage for this week, thoughts are you will just need to fix it next rd… May as well get it done now is my thought on it.
    Pros and cons…
pro – do it now, gives you instant points certainty. leave it a rd, gives u visibility to other issues that may come up… other late Lyons-made outs
con – do it now, and next week someone else pulls out and you are down two trades. but you still have to fix up ruc.

btw – I had swan too… he was going anyways (swan into sam Mitchell). not sure if I feel ripped off about this all or not. thought I had good ideas previously

      Danny · 18/07/2014 at 11:44

Why not see what your opponent has donr this week before you trade

    Flacid Jaff · 18/07/2014 at 11:40

Yep, I have Hickey as cover and he's out for this week too, DAMN, but Sandi will come back with a vengence, I'm copping the zero, If you're in finals or aren't flush with trades, do the same

      Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 11:49

assuming he's just getting rested and not a longer term injury.

wes · 18/07/2014 at 09:36

who knows about the injury to Tom Hickey.
I don't have in my team – I got Longer sitting on bench.
With Sandi out, I can either upgrade him to a Jacobs and leave Longer on bench OR
I can stick with Longer for this rd and upgrade other worse areas in my team like fwds.

So – not that I;ve explained myself very well – If Hickey is out for a long time, then it may pay for me to keep Longer around even if he scores low. If Hickey is going to return, then maybe I should do the sandi to Jacobs upgrade
thoughts appreciated

    Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 10:05

Depends on a few things wes. Do you or can you win this week if you have Longer on the ground. And need to see the rest of your team to really make a decision.

      wes · 18/07/2014 at 10:38

I will win 1 and lose the other (no real chance of beating him).
I really want to know what injury Hickey has – if it is long term or not…

the next issue then is what to do with ruc.
Current RUCs are mummy and Sandi
Sandi is out for his nana nap…
considering I think the win/loss is a formality this rd, I am setting myself up for next rd and finals
If I leave Longer in play, and if he is there for a couple rds at least, then by leaving him in and not getting Jacobs I lose 30 odd pts a rd, this rd.
But next rd, cos I am downgrading sandie to Ben Brown, I give myself another 300k to spend rd 19.
that rd I can upgrade tex walker and dom tyson to whomever I want to really (boomer and JPK)… and that should give me from rd 19 an extra 50-60pts there… an overall win of 30 pts for me.
rd 20 I can upgrade longer to Jacobs with a spare bencher and get that 30 pts back there too (if I lat through first rd of finals.
      … maybe

    Flacid Jaff · 18/07/2014 at 11:37

Sandi will come home strong after 3 weeks rest between his last game and his next. A home final is crucial to the dockers so Lyon won't rest him again.
You have Longer as cover for this week, perfect, save the trade and keep the biggest monster in the league in your team!

Flaccid Jaff · 18/07/2014 at 11:30

Hello Community, I need help on the last decision I'll make this year, and where better to turn than the 'Jock Reynolds Fantsy Footy Community'?
I have 1 trade left (after I go Langford>Mitchell this week).

def: Bartel, McVeigh, Swallow, Mitchell, hanley, hurn, (Suckling on bench)
mid: Pendles, JPK, Libba, Selwood, Beams, Sloane, Johnson, Griffen, (M.Thomas on bench)
ruck: Jacobs, Sandi (Hickey on bench)
fwd: Parker, Dusty, Danger, Dahlhaus, Zorko, Roughy (Lloyd on bench) (note:I have Wingard swapping with Spina at M10&F8 as exta cover)

    Flaccid Jaff · 18/07/2014 at 11:32

I have cash, and am considering:
1: Upgrade Suckling to Malceski, Hurn to the bench.
2: Upgrade M.Thoma to Rockliff, Griffen to the bench.
3: Upgrade Wingard to Boomer, Roughy o the bench.
4: I am $20k shy of Lloyd to Boomer, but if Boomer scores sub 120 nd Lloyd over 60, I might be able to make this trade next week.
5: Save the trade and the cash for finals.

I am sitting in 8th spot in my leagues so I need to be aggressive now. Saw the Sandi rest coming so have Hickey as cover (DAMN!) summing up my year so far, have to take the ruck 0 as I'm skint for trades. I am leaning towards either getting rockliff for thomas this week or boomer for Lloyd next week but would love your thoughts!

    Thanks for the support community!

      Zo123 · 18/07/2014 at 11:52

geeez. I like the idea of bringing in Malceski.

      big aggots · 18/07/2014 at 15:57

      Option 5.
You've got some serious coin sitting on the bench. Any thoughts/chances of holding that trade and using loopholes if you can?

Mangrove Jack · 18/07/2014 at 12:13

Down to 4 trades, and lucky to have the SMartin>FThurlow switch open, so Sandi on the bench and Kersten coming into the Fwd line.

Holding trades in case of other emergencies or other strange sh^t thats going to happen

Roy · 18/07/2014 at 12:47

Firstly Jock you bloody legend, love the podcasts and love how you have nurtured the community through another season of this great game. First time poster looking for some insightful input from this great community. Team is ranked 399 overall, like to stay top 1k but mainly just want to win my league. Have two easier games coming up and have top 4 locked away so trying to decide on if I should burn 1 or 2 trades this week. I have 6 left with 384k war chest.

DEF: Swallow, Birchall, Hanley, Bartel, McVeigh, Kade bloody Simpson ) – Langford/Bews as cover
MID: Pendles, Duckwood, Barlow, Dal Santo, Beams, Libba, Goddard, Shenton) – O'Brien/Honey as cover
RUC; Jacobs/Sandi (Currie, King)
FWD: Danger, Parker, DMartin, RGray, Zorko, Martin (Ambrose, Gimpey )

Trade 1 has to be Shenton to Rocky? Mitchell? Fyfe? JPK?
Trade 2 – Sandi out Goldy in? or just hold that ever important trade for later carnage.

    Dylan · 18/07/2014 at 14:47

If I was in your position I would trade sandi out, even if he's only away a week goldy has been outscoring him. I would also look at getting rid of shenton, any of those options are great! Having sandi out this week is really going to hurt you if you still have a chance at the 50k.

For what it's worth, I'm eating that 207cm doughnut this week as i reckon he'll be back next round and my next two games are against softer opponents, and I have already sewn up my trades improving my team elsewhere (Swan out for Mitchell, McGovern out for Motlop. I want Rocky but i can't afford him)

    Derek · 18/07/2014 at 15:05

If you really are just wanting to win your leagues, I would hold Sandi and take a 0. He will be back next round, rested and ready to knock out big scores. The good thing is that you know that he won't be rested during the SC finals (not same can be said for Fyfe & co).

If you were to trade Sandi out, I would look at trading him out for Harvey (via SMartin swing)

Derek · 18/07/2014 at 13:13

Going to Trade Sandilands out this week.

Have $172k in bank. Can't decide if I should go to Jacobs or Pyke.

Massive price diff of $280k.

If I get Jacobs, i know I am getting the #1 Premier Ruckman in Comp.

If I get Pyke, This will allow me to upgrade Cloke >> Harvey & Suckling >> Bartel

what do you reckon? Anyone who has Pyke?

    BCHawks · 18/07/2014 at 13:25

I would go to Pyke simply because allows you to do the other trades plus he Pyke should average 85+ from here on out.

      Derek · 18/07/2014 at 13:56

I'm surprised Pyke is so cheap. He won't score as well as Jacobs (or Sandi) but with the extra cash to upgrade my B Graders to A Graders, I should come out ahead.

big aggots · 18/07/2014 at 15:26

I've placed the aggots well & truly on the chopping block. Sandi goneski to Wood. Frees up the cash I needed to complete my team. Free hit of Wood as emerg and see what he can bring (108 & 157 last year when Jolly went down). If I'm not happy, Thurlow/S.Martin swap to R2. Lions website has Leuenberger earliest return now round 21.

TOM · 18/07/2014 at 15:31

Community, this week I'm going to trade derickx to ben brown to cover for sandi and then kane mitchell is out. I have 3 trades before i do any trading. Im definetly going to trade derickx but I'm not sure wether to hold kane mitchell and cop the 0 or trade him. If i trade him I'll have 1 trade left. I'm definetly going to win this week, so I'm thinking of just holding kane mitchell for this week and maybe trade him next week.

    Matt · 19/07/2014 at 17:37

Hold Mitchell, but instead of downgrading to ben brown look at cameron wood

wes · 18/07/2014 at 15:56

anyone suggest a good DPP def/mid option for bench coverage at all.
So needs to be a cheaper player (no more than 250k).

I need to weed down the inventory on my bench and put it into starters… so looking at having minimal coverage on bench – a def/mid and fwd/ruc being it with the rest getting the $$ into upgrading on field.

maybe this is a crap option to take… just an idea I had.
ben brown offers cheap ruc/fwd coverage in event of losing a player for instance… am considering him.
just not sure on def/mid cheapies that get games regularly

    big aggots · 18/07/2014 at 16:49

Warnock omitted opens the door for Cam Wood. Sole ruckman at 162K is a gift if you have Derickz, Currie at R3. Malthouse will give Wood every chance and SC ruckmen seem to get big points simply by running through the banner, swigging on Gatorade, dropping their guts etc.

Mozz · 18/07/2014 at 17:02

My DEF structure is:
Swallow, McVeigh, Simpson, Hibberd, Bartel, Enright (Z.Jones, Gregoriou)

MID structure is:
Pendles, Rockliff, Libba, Sloane, Selwood, Beams, NDS, N.Jones (Shenton, Acres)

$123K in the bank
please help someone!!

    Lloyd · 18/07/2014 at 17:12

I say don't I have had the bastard twice already this year and has burnt me twice, except if u were worried about Enright the rest of your team is at least as good as Mitchell.

      Mozz · 18/07/2014 at 17:20

so you think Enright ==> Mitchell?

I kinda see that as a sideways trade

    BCHawks · 18/07/2014 at 17:20

easy Shenton to Mitchell opens up swing and give good bench cover

      Mozz · 18/07/2014 at 18:48

and have mitchell on the bench!?

        BCHawks · 18/07/2014 at 18:59

        yer I would

,,,, · 18/07/2014 at 17:14

Big question?

    Lloyd · 18/07/2014 at 17:17

Rocky POD because no-one would have brought him in last week

Lloyd · 18/07/2014 at 17:14

So excited to be currently in position to qualify for the Jock Reynolds Divisional system next year, will be fiercely defending my spot in the top 6.

The_Darwin_Ducks · 18/07/2014 at 17:15

i need sam micthell this week to finish my backline
I have 2 choices

Joel Tippet —-> Sam Micthell leaving me with 65k + Luke Mcdonald as back up for my defense
Luke Mcdonald —->Sam Mitchell leaving me with 228k + no bench cover

i have 6 trades

    Mozz · 18/07/2014 at 17:19

Definitely Tippet IMO. You do need bench cover because there will be players rested in the coming weeks so McDonald will come in handy

      Itchy Nuts Pieman · 18/07/2014 at 17:50

Agreed Mozz. The General is coming

TOM · 18/07/2014 at 17:44

Honeychurch dropped

Nick · 18/07/2014 at 18:04

Going Sandilands to Pyke
Then Cloke to Parker
Leaves me with only 1 trade left but I feel my players will definitely not be rested, the pyke trade will either kill me or win it for me and seeing him come back from injury like he as shows me there's more to come from the Canadin

    Derek · 18/07/2014 at 18:18

I am thinking going with Pyke as well. I can't believe he is this cheap. I was going to use my cash to upgrade Cloke to Harvey. I just think with hanaberry likely to be back next week, Parker will find himself down in the forward line getting pushed out of the way by Tippett & Buddy.

Terry Mayne · 18/07/2014 at 18:27

righto things are not looking good, who's the better vice captain option, Harvey, Selwood, bartel. back up will be pendles a captain. need points or i miss the finals in my own leage.not a good year. thinking harvey best option. please help.

    Tommykwr · 18/07/2014 at 18:56

I'm going harvey as well hes capable of big scores

Cyril · 18/07/2014 at 18:46

Is Mitchell really a must. Hasn’t scored many tons this year

    Mozz · 18/07/2014 at 18:52

looking at his run home, he averages 110+ against his final 4 opponents. He is a must

depends how many trades you have. 6 or more go for it

*regarding if Mittchell worth trading in or not

Jack · 18/07/2014 at 19:12

I have 3 trades left and i am thinking about trading him out. Is it wise to trade him and if i do should i get in another ruck man or should i swap Stefan Martin into my rucks and get in a forward. Money is no issue. I'm thinking about either getting in Robbie Gray or Goldstein. My current rucks and forwards are S.Jacobs, P.dangerfield, D.Martin, D.Zorko, J.Roughead, C.Wingard and Stefan Martin.
Thoughts would be appreciated!

Using up my last 2 trades and riding it out til the end!
Shenton out, Smitch in
Taylor out, Boomer in
Leaves me full on field premo, team as follows:

DEF: Swallow, McVeigh, Bartel, Simpson, Hanley, Enright (Bews, ZJones)
MID: Pendles, JPK, Jelwood, Beams, Fyfe, Cotchin, Murph, Smitch (O’Brien, Honeychurch)
RUC: Sauce, Sandy (Derickx, King)
FWD: Boomer, Danger, Parker, Dusty, Zorko, Pav (Ambrose, Cameron)

Happy to cop zero for Sandy this round, hoping Derickx gets a late call up!

Have swing sets for MID/FWD & DEF/MID for injury cover, cross my fingers the dreaded LTI or General doesn’t strike too much!

Am I mad? Going for best outright, don’t care about leagues.

Not smart to use all ur trades shenton trade is good but u will need to keep at least one trade for the rest of the year.

I have 2 trades left and have to trade out shenton in the midfield, have 600k but want to open my def/mid swing set. Who would be a better option out of j.mcveigh or s.mitchell as my m8? Or would c.ward or stevie j be better options?
