Round 18 Supercoach Scouting Report
Howdy folks and welcome to our Round 18 Supercoach Scouting Report.
Our first week without Gary Ablett is in the books, and it looks to be a very mixed bag for some. Those who went with the likes of Danger, Selwood, JPK, Stevie J or Fyfe would probably be quite please with the score they pulled off with the Big C this week. For others who went with Pendlebury (like me) or Tom Liberatore, they might be slightly more disappointed, with Pendles picking the best possible time to have his first sub 100 Supercoach point game of the year. I guess Round 17 proved to us that the only thing for sure in Supercoach is that nothing is for sure! Still, we can’t dwell on poor scores from superstar players too much, even Ablett was prone to the odd stinker here and there and it’ll be up and onwards for many in Round 18 and that’s what we’re here to take a look at.
Not only is Round 18 “Multicultural Round” but it will be a split round over 2 weeks so we can drag another week out of the fixture and drive everyone crazy with late outs, players being dropped so they can have 2 weeks rest and all sorts of other shenanigans that can happen over these split rounds that cause us Supercoach massive headaches. Ross Lyon will no doubt be up to his old tricks this week, so we must stay vigilant!
Also, remember to look out for the red and green Supercoach scores, RED = bad, GREEN = good which may help you out when it comes to picking your captains for the week
First up as always is our Top 10 Supercoach scorers for Round 17
It was a young Bulldog midfielder leading the pack this week, but it wasn’t Tom Liberatore for once, with Jack Macrae knocking out a fantastic score of 172 Supercoach Points on a 43 disposal, 6 mark, 2 goal game. Todd Goldstein produced some form of last year with a 166 Supercoach Point effort. Patrick Dangerfield showed that rumours of his demise to injury are slightly premature with 41 possessions, 27 of which were of the contested variety and a score of 159. Travis Boak and Brent Harvey make welcome returns to the top 10 list and it was a good day out for both the Cats and the Bombers, with each side fielding 3 players in the Top 10 for Round 16.
We must also consider Captain worthy scores which were just outside the top 10 from popular SC picks such as Luke Dahlhaus (141), JPK (140), Bryce Gibbs (138), Stevie J (132), Callan Ward (131), Marc Murphy (130), Nat Fyfe (127), Luke Parker (123) and Jarrad McVeigh (121) as well.
And that now leaves our Top 10 ranking for the year at…
Ablett, Rockliff and Liberatore all held their spots, but it was Scott Pendlebury with the biggest slide, moving down from 4th to 6th after all of Boak, Selwood, Harvey and Dangerfield ranked in the Top 10 this round, with Boak making the biggest jump up from 7th to 4th. 7th to 10th remains static once again with no new entries into the Top 10, but with players such as Todd Goldstein, JPK, Jimmy Bartel and Adam Treloar all in close contention to crack the Top 10.

Captain Pick(s):
We’ll likely have a trio of viable VC selections here, with Murphy, Harvey and Dal Santo as the prime picks for this game. Gibbs and Goldy have shown they can put up a big score too, but their ownership rates are quite a bit lower than the other three, so I’m sure they’ll only be an option for a few. Harvey hasn’t scored well against Carlton in recent years, which may dissuade some from picking him, but he’s been in ripping form this year and I’d be willing to bet he can put up a good score this week.

Captain Pick(s):
Last time these two teams faced was the famous game where Ross Lyon rested half the team leading up to the finals, with 11 changes being made for the game. Hopefully we won’t see any such shenanigans from Ross the Toss/Boss (depending on your affiliations) this week, but I have a feeling that while it won’t be 11 men bad, we still may see a few players rested. At least this game is scheduled in Week 1, so we’ll know straight away if anyone is missing and we will be able to plan the rest of our Week 1 and 2 around any OUTS that might occur. Fyfe is the obvious pick here, with both a 3 and 5 round average of 136 Supercoach Points. Sandilands might be a sneaky pick here, with other ruckman such as Todd Goldstein (166 last week), Dawson Simpson (117 in Round 13) Matthew Lobbe (150 in Round 12), Trent West (121 in Round 6), Sam Jacobs (118 in Round 4), Dean Cox (121 in Round 3) and Shane Mumford (158 in Round 2) posting decent scores against the Saints rucks.

Gray could still be an out at this stage, which would be a big blow to Port, but could hopefully be a boost to Chad Wingards scores. Nathan Jones was on fire in the earlier rounds, knocking up 3 Top 10 scores in the first 5 rounds, however he has fell back down to earth a bit since then, with a few scores in the 120’s, along with 5 sub 100 scores to go along with it. Travis Boak is another solid option to take from this game as well and showed last round that he’s more than capable of knocking out a terrific score if he has a good day out.

Captain Pick(s):
It appears there is a new rule in place with Tom Liberatore in Supercoach this year. If Griffen plays, then he’s a very good VC/C pick, with a Supercoach average of 120.46 in the 13 games he and Griffen have played together. In the 3 games Griffen has missed this year Liberatore’s Supercoach average has fallen to 81.6 (scores of 79 in Round 1, 65 in Round 15 and 101 in Round 17) as he struggles with the extra attention that comes his way. Griffen was a late out last week, so if he misses again I’d likely skip young Libba as an option. If Griffen is nameds named then history suggests that Libba should be a fine choice to put the VC/C on. Goddard has a great record against the Bullies and will be returning from his suspension to a red hot Essendon team, but the Bulldogs are running alright too at this point in time. Could be another game where we see some scores in the 130’s/140’s like last time around.

Might be some slim pickings from this game. Deledio scored 140 the last time these two teams faced, but so far this year only has 4 scores of 100+ and his only Captain worth score came in Round 1 when he scored 136. Shuey had a big one last week, and Cotchin has been quite good over the past month, so those two, along with Matt Priddis would be the likely targets if you were going to pick someone from this game. Riewoldt has a nice score of 125 last week, but his averages at Patersons suggest he may be in line for another poor showing this round.

Captain Pick(s):
Rockliff will be back for this game and is a very good Captain candidate to take a look at. More than a few of the Suns youngsters have pretty poor to average records at The Gabba, but they’ll be playing without Gary Ablett this week so they’ll really need to step it up if they want to win. Hanley is a capable Supercoach scorer as well, but can be very hot and cold at times and can be quite unpredictable in what sort of scores he’ll put up from week to week.

Captain Pick(s):
Could be a big one for Sydney here. JPK has fantastic career averages against the Hawks and 2 big scores in his last 3 so I think a lot of people will look in his direction. Franklin put up an OK score against his old side in Round 8, but they’ll be without Brian Lake again, although a returning Josh Gibson will be back to help things out for the Hawks back 6. Josh Jenkins kicked a career high 5 goals against the Hawks last week, something that Franklin is more than capable of doing, so he could be a risky VC pick if you want to go in a boom or bust type direction.

Captain Pick(s):
It’ll likely be a Dangerfield VS Pendlebury option for this one. Pendles scored 128 against Adelaide earlier in the season and had Sam Kerridge tagging him that entire time. It’s doubtful that Kerridge will be fully fit, or even picked by next week as he’s been dealing with a hot spot in his foot the past three weeks. Adelaide have had more than a few difficulties stopping the likes of Pendlebury and Swan in the past, so I fully expect Pendles to have a bounce back game and net us a Captain worthy score here.
BARRON VON CROWS CAPTAIN SELECTION(S):
There’s more than a few appealing matchups this week, with Fyfe and Selwood taking on some weaker opposition, and also guys like Rockliff, JPK and Libba in matchups where they’ve scored very well previously. I’ll still be running with Pendlebury as my Captain, but it will be between the 3 above on who gets to be my VC. I’m leaning towards taking a chance on Selwood or JPK as the Freo VS Saints matchup leaves me slightly worried that Ross Lyon could pull one of his tricks, especially with the bye coming up.
So who will you be looking at as your VC/C picks this week? Let us know in the comments below, or drop us a line on the Twitters @BarronVonCrow

Hey guys first time posting here as I play Fantasy. Was wondering how my team would do in Super Coach!
http://oi62.tinypic.com/ajplc1.jpg
Hi Andy,
Welcome to the community!!
Pretty good side and would translate pretty well to Supercoach. Three players stood out as ones that you could improve on.
The Suckling pig served his purpose early in the season as a cheap defensive option but has now been moved on by almost everyone in sc.
B. Crouch is a bit of a low point for your mids at this point of the season
M. Duncan the only weak spot on your forward line assuming Martin is not fed too many ham and lueneggenburgers when he returns.
Overall a very good line up that would also be scoring well in SC.
Next year it is time to ditch that other game and come over to the dark side of the force.
Cheers
JC
Hi Andy
far as a fantasy team goes, it looks really good.
I am on fantasy, and have been coming here all year… was an excellent source of info for my initial team selection with their scouting reports.
Baron rocks!!!!
Scores are fairly different here, so I temper advice given a little bit, but overall what is good in here, is good in fantasy land.
Where are you ranked at the moment?
I started on fire – got to 2600th at the bye rounds, and then have died massively. Didn't clear out enough cash cows early on. I'm now down to 19000th
Thanks for the reply lads!
I did the opposite wes haha lost a bit of ground early but my ranking has gone from 9k 5 weeks ago almost in the top 1k now.. still got the eye on the prize 🙂 I nailed basically every cash cow which definitely helped me.
I'm holding off on the Suckers > Mitchell trade for 1 more week as the Swans are one of Sammys worst teams to play (DT/fantasy wise).
Thoughts Burgoyne to Mitchell ??
Have 6 trades and $128k in the chest
My team is full premo
Have gardiner as bench cover
Thanks communtiy

yep. Mitchell is cheap and you would have to assume he will score better than silks for the rest of the season. You have trades to use so I'd say do it.
With only 1 trade left am I screwed?
yes
Well and truely, sorry wish there was better news…
If you are going to make your league finals and they mean something to you then you must hold that trade until you get to the knockout stage or you are sunk.
I would only say you are screwed, if you have inadequate cover.
by inadequate cover, i mean relying on rookie who gets the odd game.
If you have good, reliable cover, i'd say not screwed.
does it count as one round of supercoach
Yep. Rolling lockout across two weeks. Be aware that, like always, trades can not be reversed even if your traded in player plays in the second week
hanley into pendles for me really risky but can see hanley going nuts
I like it Jesse!
IMO if Ross Lyon gonna rest anyone it would be Sandi. Has backup ruckmen Clarke and Apeness to cover and Sandi showing signs of tiring of late.
I'm tending toward a VC on Fyfe not just because he's in outstanding form but mainly because Freo are playing the Saints, who would have to be the worst scoring supercoach team in the league.
Barring Essendon's loss to St Kilda early on, every time St Kilda have played a top 8 side, an average of 8 players per game from their opposition have tonned up, many with significant scores, with the Saints tons to Opposition tons sitting at a ratio of 2:8.2. Basically there's a heap of points up for grabs in these games because the Saints don't take any of them, and all of your dependables will get a century against the Saints, the best of which should get over 120.
Compare that to GWS, who despite only beating one team in the top 8 this season (that weird round 1 aberration), in those six games GWS players have tonned up 28 times compared to their oppositions' dismal 20 tons, a ratio per game of 4.66:3.33. So while GWS are losing, their boys are skillful enough to hog supercoach points.
