Supercoach 2014 preseason podcast

At last we can trade in blokes knowing they’ve had their bye.

And we have some reasonable quality presenting itself to us as as well which is arousing.

Community – the next few weeks are a delicate balancing act. You want to concentrate on bringing your sides scoring capacity higher. You also want to make sure you’re cherry ripe to have at least 18 warm bodies on the deck for the next couple of rounds.

Sharpen your minds community. Sharpen your minds and focus NOW. This is the stage of the season where the inexperienced lapse in concentration.

And when members of this community pounce.

    thoughts on using my 3 trades this week?

    sammy mitchell to bartel or hanley

    roughy (if rubbed out) to ???? (need some help have danger,gray and zorko)

    and suckling piggy to ??? (have hibberd, enright, mitchell have 212$ in the bank)

      Roughy would only be out for 1-2 weeks I think if he is gone, so depending on how you look over the next two bye rounds I would suggest holding Roughy – He is someone you would probably want to keep for the season (unless you were planning on getting rid of him at some stage).

      Simpson would be a good upgrade for the pig.

      Yes get roughy out for sure. He will get 2-3 weeks. Then he has 93 carry over points which is basically another week then he has a bye also. That could be 5 weeks out. Even if its 4 thats still 19% of the year he will miss.

    Ellis – Acres
    Polec – Selwood
    Higgins – Rnd 8 premium forward (although struggling to think of anyone decent)

    Is it too early to cull Polec?

      I would be pulling the trigger on Polec. He is currently my M7 and if he can turn into a selwood, griffen or muddy for less than $80k more then thats a steal

      Selwood's be is about 160, which he is capable of but if you wait another week you might save 20-30k

      Polec's BE is still only going to be about 85, which he's shown he's more than capable of scoring.

      I wouldn't be rushing to trade out one of the most consistent scorers in the game, especially not when he's got Melbourne and St Kilda as two of his next three.

        Gilly is correct, Selwood will cop a Crowley tag and hopefully drop another 20K

    Is it time to trade Macrae to a rolled gold premium? He has done his job as a mid price breakout player (raised 140k). Looked to be struggling last night but saved faced with a big final term. Thoughts?

      Yea i think its a good move, if you had him early enough, you made some cash from him, Griffen starting to look in better form, Macrae has probably peaked, Good time to get a round 8 premium who has already had their bye.

      Macrae copped a hard tag from cross and then was let loose in the fourth (cross went to boyd?) where he pulled in about half or more of his score. I would be holding for now.

      I ran over the same thing myself today after seeing his score, but there are much better options in the forward line to go back to Buddy. Gray, Dalhaus, Parker, Wingard etc.

      My advice is wait post round 9 for Selwood, his price go down and Polec and Tyson price go up. Save cash $.Welcome

        I agree favalinko. I'm in no hurry to rush Jelwood in to my side just yet either.

        If he puts out more 70-80 type rubbish next weekend with Crowley hanging all over him he could end up dropping below $500K eventually. So it could be as long as a month before he fully bottoms out in price.

        Also I think we need to see at least some sort of return to elite output form before we fork out the investment capital. He could be carrying an undisclosed niggle for all we know that's been hindering his performance lately.

          I agree, he has a be of 158 for next week so while possible unlikely to reach that. Also concerned about injury, remember he had foot surgery late in the pre season. I didn't start with him as I was concerned that it had been an ongoing issue and he had a managed pre season.

          I might be jumping at shadows but just thinking back to nic nat last year, limited preseason then came back and went bang bang. We all got on board thinking he was back then he turned into a stinking turd.

      depends on how many you are fielding this week. If you dont get Jelwood then Polec will be on the bench this week. And Jelwood could easily smash out a 140 and only drop another 10K. Now is the business time of the season and theyre the risks involved. The aim is to get the best team ASAP. Look at Danger- he made up his losses in 2 weeks

    Is Christian Salem worth a look at some stage? Had the vest 3 times which has caused his price to drop this round. However the kid can play and looks at home everytime he comes on. I can see his JS being healthy and I think will eventually make you a nice earn once he starts games and will provide a healthy emerg score.

      Bang on, JX20. He was played 3qrts of footy in those games, and has gone 25, 25, 46. Kicked a goal in each game. Just needs a good run at it

        I think Proos is playing him the same as JKH until he gets the speed of the game he will have the vest! JS good will play full games after the bye I believe!

    Community thought on buddy franklin??? Now that the fwd line is fit n firing together with Tippett back and Sydney playing a lot better

      Not this week CJ, hold off til after the bye. Buddy has been 1 game on followed by 1 game off so far this season. I decent score does not a premo forward make.

      Would prefere Bruest, Wingard, Dalhaus over the 9Million dollar man, at least until Buddy manages 2-3 decent scores in a row.

        I disagree. There are valid excuses for all his low scores this year.

        His first two, it was pouring down not unlike the flood in which Noah had to build the ark which doesn’t suit lone full forwards.

        His most recent was injury related. With Tippet, Reid and Goodes as other forward targets, he will almost certainly not get the attention he has been getting to this point.

        I expect him to average 100+ for rest of the season barring incident/injury and is currently priced under 80 ave. That’s a bargain in my book.

    What are the community's thoughts on BJ 'Lord of the Trouser Ring' Floggard as an M7/M8 upgrade option this week? That's of course assuming he plays this Friday and that the jaw is fine.

    Obviously not ideal with his Rd10 bye still around the corner but from a price perspective this would be the optimal week to bring him in, somewhere around the $460K mark, now that the 11 from Rd4 has finally left his pricing.

    Has tonned up every week he's played, bar the one where he was subbed out early, resulting in an adjusted average of 116 and will have a tiny BE this week. Perhaps the Priddis like bargain buy of 2014.

    As an aside it looks like Josh Kelly has fattened up fully now and with his bye about to occur he's the lamb I would silence for this purpose.

      SC, I like your thinking as I was looking at the very same.

      BJ is like a bit like Priddis, he won't go as high as Ablett or Pendles as often (occasional 140+) but he rarely has a bad game unless inhury plays a roll.

      You can bank him in for 95-120 each and every week and that is good enough for a M7/M8 spot on any man's teams.

      I will however wait until after his bye, he will only drop approx $15K this week and a break even next week of about 90 so may go back up another $5K unless he has a 150+ game meaning at the start of round 11 he should still be around that $475K mark.

      Good enough for me to bring in

      Thought i was the only one, Goddard is straight in this week at $466, 000.
      Averaging 116 for 5 games if you remove his 11 when he was subbed out 5 mins in.

      His BE will be 40 next week, a score of 100 will be a $26k price rise.

      Good work Sammy, I'm on 1764 with Thomas and Dunstan to go so should make the 1900 mark which I am very happy with.

      A good % booster when my best of 5 league opponents will be around the 1100 range.

      This might hurt us come round 10 though, I will need to (as crouching one would say) "TRADE ARSE OFF".

    Hi guys, need some advice.
    I'm predicted to lose my league match this week in my money league by about 100 points. Is it worth the trade of McDonald to Simpson to try to get the win this week even though he'll then miss next week? Don't have many round 9 bye players so would have almost a full team next week, but was planning on getting Bartel. By getting Simpson this week I won't be able to afford Bartel next week. But was planning on getting Simpson at some stage.
    Thoughts? Should I go for the win?

      It sounds like it fits into your structures ok, just not sure if you will get 100+ out of Simpson. Who do you play next week, and will having Bartel be critical next week?

      Maybe ask yourself this, if he scores 90 and you lose by 10, are you you still happy to have Simpson in your side, knowing that you cant have Bartel?

        You also need to look at where you are in your league, if you are sitting top 6 now, you still have every chance of making the grand final in that league so a short term trade now to win 1 game may proved to be the killer if at the end of the season, you have traded out Simpson?

        Based on what you have told us and if you are top 6 in the league, I wouldn't do the trade at the expense of not being able to get bartel next week.

        Thanks Garglesnarf! Good advice. Although I think I've just decided to get Dal Santo in the mids instead of Bartel next week. Either way, it'll help me win the next two rather than this week and maybe the next two.

    Currently up by 191 and have Murphy to play tonight. Have got the VC on McVeigh's 131. Opponent has Murphy as C, Ray and Simpson.
    Do I loophole to get McVeigh's 131 or move the big C to Murphy?

      322 lead with 1 player v 4 (effectively 0 v 3) or 191 up with 0 v 2.

      Murphy's recent scores (last 4 years) v St.Kilda are 75, 57, 78, 73, 115, 90 and 75.

      Go with McVeigh, you'd have to be stiff for Murphy to go big.

    Going with Suckling to Bartell, Kelly to Cotchin, Polec to Pendles this week after stashing some cash last. Cotchin may have sucked so far, but his draw looks too good to ignore from here on.

        I was "three times an arsehole" last week. (Best song yet) and have stashed away $590000 after dealing Stich to Salem, plus another downgrade. Stich be at 138 and is an ideal sub coming back into the Swans. Still hurt me when Salem was unbelievably the sub again. Would have easily toned up in a full game. Not only did he score "only" 45 but price dropped when I was counting on it going way up. The perfect trade in target for a bench keeper I reckon. He'll average over 80 for rest of the year.

    Montagna's last 7 games of 2013 averaged over 131+ including prelim 154 and GF 165 scores.
    Slow start this year but with the return of Steven has gone 140 174 144.
    With his bye yet to come, 637K, BE 61 tonight – is there a good time to grab him? Or simply leave him alone? Massive POD and can he be a top 5 midfielder by the end of the year?

      He's been in ripping form the past month. Unfortunately you are paying top dollar for him at the moment and with the rookie situation looking a little dire right now we have to conserve every dollar we can lay our hands on.

      I'd still also rather throw that sort of coin towards a Pendles upgrade instead, as predictable and uninspired as that may seem.

      However those who already have Monty must be basking in a Supercoach glow. Will be keenly watching to see whether he can keep that 140 plus form going tonight!

      I'm in a similar position having both Kelly and Polec. Still reckon Lord Farquaad hasn't quite run his race just yet so intend to hold on to him a little longer. Think the time is about right to cull Kelly now though.

      So my preference would be option A although I'm looking myself at bringing in BJ Goddard instead for $100K less than Swanny. Swanny at $564K is still a bargain though especially with his bye out of the way now.

    What are peoples thoughts on old mate Daniel Jackson from the tiges? Posting some good scores, bye gone and could be a significant POD.

    He is a complete toss bag off the field by the looks, however you have to look past these things when you are chasing SC glory……

      I was having a good hard look at him as well Jimmy BUT came to the conclusion doesnt seem to be capable of pulling out massive scores. Looks consistent yes as probably will never get the tag with Deledio and Cotchin there. Depends how the rest of your mids are looking – IF you just need some consistency ie: 100-105 output each week he or priddis will almost guarantee you that but he is not going to ever pump out a 160 etc like a selwood, johnson, pendles etc. He wouldve been great to have at the start of the year but dont think i can bring him now.

      Think plenty of coaches are looking to bring in Bartel this week, many using Suckling as the trade. Jobe still has bye so either of those 2 .. if you don't have to trade this week it may be worth waiting for Libba .. seems to have hit premium supercoach form

    I'm currently 2-3 and predicted to lose in both leagues by 58 and 240 respectively but have Montagna as captain tonight. Have made 1 trade so far and not sure whether to make another such as McDonald to Bruce (Saints) – provided he doesn't cop the vest or to Docherty to make some extra cash or leave until next week/week after and use the trade then. Not sure on Bruce's JS or Docherty's scoring potential. Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

    I have three spots left for premium mids and will fill them in the next couple of weeks.

    Which three to choose from these four though?

    Jelwood, Watson, Stevie J and Goddard.

    Leaning towards the first three, but at his price Goddard is hard to pass up.

    Great Pod-cast Jock Reynolds peter higgionbottham and crouching one and i lam looking forward to Mick the Mad Irishman triumphant return. To payback the INCREDIBLE work you boys do here is my wisdom for the community.
    The first part of my wisdom is i will closely follow the St Kilda vs Carlton match tonight with much interest because of the upcoming star Billy Acres however i will not be swayed with a 60 or 70 or even 80 to go to the extent of getting him in my team i will only be satisfied with a 32 possession game with 110 super coach points beside his name. Because i believe it is not worth it to downgrade to a player that is going to slow burn this far into the season. Lets say Billy Acres doesn't achieve my bench mark i will use my trades to swap burgone with McDonald making burgone in the midfield leaving burgone as a keeper in my back line for the rest of the year and then i will trade Mcdonald who is a certain trade out this week because he is now bleeding cash and it is a good time to trade him out for a premium. I am thinking obviously selwood with his price and everything however since he has the Crowley trade and Crowley has been down this year and will probably fight back this week to stop selwood i probably wont does anyone have any suggestions for a upgrade player for Mcdonald.

      tom, this is inspiring stuff and a great idea but don't you think your asking a bit much of Billy? There are next to zero downgrade options this week and if you can name one better than Acres please enlighten me and the community. While some people may have the cash for an upgrade as you clearly do, the majority will have to downgrade first and Acres or maybe Hartung seem like the picks of the bunch.
      Your thoughts?

      I ended up using that process .. traded McDonald for Swallow so that I could have 1 down and 2 upgrades next week. May only do 1 upgrade, 1 down but I have now have the option to use 3 trades that will significantly improve my team. Potentially I'll be bringing in 3 premium keepers and 1 late autumn lamb .. cash and points .. I like it!

      True, it will be a toss up between him and sauce. It's more if I go to dixon now, and he does pay off with consistent scores (as he will be in the ruck consistently for at least 10 weeks), then i can swing him forward later in the season if there aren't 6 consistently scoring forwards by then.

      Sloane is a star and has been for nearly 2-years. That Jock bloke is fast becoming irrelevant as a supercoach advisor; all his tips pre-sloane have been for nuffa's Webster, Dawes, Schuey etc, etc etc.

        Was going to trade out Webster on round 10 but may have to do sooner. Won't do much good bringing Docherty in rd 9 though. Ugh.

      Watson looks to be the best pick apart from the fact he has the bye in R10.
      Griffin looks like his starting to hit form and is under 500K but has the bye.
      Swan and Ward are both great players, but Watson would be my Number 1 pick, coming of a 158, and price at what 523 or something? Can't knock that.

      What about little Libba? In the same price range and is a tackling machine .. tackles = big points. Ward is usually very clean with the ball, regularly 75+% on DE. Even with a stack of handballs on the weekend and his team getting thumped, he scored 123. Watson probably a better pickup after his bye although his price will go up after that 153 kicks in. Swan is Swan, has had his bye and is available at a good price .. can go real big but can get left in the forward line for too long sometimes. In saying that he is a goal kicker. All are solid picks.

      There's Fletcher Roberts from bulldogs who played his first game this week although JS is pretty average. Have you got Ambrose? His JS is pretty good with players out and his priced at 149.8K? Only problem is he has the bye in R10.

However, he did play and although he didn't get a lot of touches, he scored a solid 74. Adelaide will be blooding a future "lamb" this week who will be a lot cheaper. His job security sounds pretty good if you listen to the coach. Do you have DPP swinger to be able to take advantage of the Mid rookies …

      Stop and take a deep breath son it is just the end of the footy week. Hallahan is still -17 BE why would you trade him? You don't have to have Acres. Trades are gold with the price of rookies. There are plenty of options you have there without parting with Hallahan. Trade Higgins up to a gun, Or Robertson to Acres would make more sense after copping the vest.
      Settle down, Fletcher Roberts does not play this week he Might play round 10 which means you don't have to bring him in till round 11 when he is on the bubble.

        I like Robertson, i reckon his a consistent player but why the green vested him i can't understand.
        I never said Fletcher would be a sure thing, seeing how hard forward rookies are to get, he seems like someone to maybe go. As i said, JKH still has money to make so im not going to trade him. A lot of people said trade Langdon after he had a average spell and he came out with that 128 so just because Robertson was green vested, doesn't mean to trade him. If he keeps on being vested then yes i agree but how many times have you seen a player score poorly, get traded out and then bounce back with a big score?

          Just trying to give you some options, I still have Lagdon and Lanford myself and don't plan on parting with them in the near future due to lack of options forward and back. But looking to make cash because of low BE. Robertson 59 ave and BE of 48 makes him a prime candidate for culling.. You don't need a forward rookie looking at your team. All the money is in the midfield. You ask for an opinion don't knock it. Last years winner said you have to be ruthless sometimes with rookies. This year maybe an exception with their prices but just an opinion like you asked for. Hallahan too Acres in my opinion is a wasted trade. You like Robertson then trade Hallahan to Acres.

        On the flip side Wingard kicks 5 goals, takes a number of marks inside 50 has 17 touches and still can't ton up. I'm not a Wingard owner but would've been peeved by that if I was.

        So you have to wonder how closely they audit the scores at times.

        The problem with the scoring is somebody, somewhere is making a judgement call on the value of each possession. teams of trained statisticians supposedly assess the state of the game, the pressure on the player and the result of a disposal or possession to determine a score for that action. Paddy Ryder got a massive boost for kicking the "winning" goal – when they were already in front! The score boosts players have been given in this situation is often ridiculous, Hanley and Dog Dog are 2 prime examples from last year where they got over 40 points for one kick .. but the best example was the winning free kick and goal just before the siren by Bartel against North .. his score jumped from around 80-something to 149 …

    My current MID structure is:

    Ablett, Pendlebury, Libba, Rockliff, Beams, Watson, N.Jones, Crouch (Taylor, Hallahan)

    Thinking about my final upgrade to finsh my MIDS which would be full of premos. Would it be better to Uprade Taylor in the mids to someone like Selwood/Sloane OR switch him down into the FWD, bring up Danger and then have a swing option for the remainder of the season. Would then trade Taylor for Gray next round.

    My FWD structure atm is Danger, Parker, Zorko, Martin, Fasolo, JKH (Lloyd, Ambrose)

    I feel that if i swing Danger up into the MIDS, my FWD line will be exposed too much and i'd have to field Fasolo, JKH and LLoyd, although if i just upgrade Taylor in the MIDS, I would have to go the remainder of the season without a swing option!
    Please someone help me as to which option would be better for my team in the long run?
    A) Upgrade Taylor in Mids
    B) Upgrade Taylor in Fwd

      Wait and see if Georgiou is named this week. He copped a head knock last week. If he comes back into the team after a week off, that tells me his JS is very good, and he will be my D8 for the rest of the season. But your structure for the byes also comes into calculations as well (Melb R10, Nth R8). Its a risky strategy, but with the lack of low priced rookie defenders on the radar, I've been turning over forward rookies to generate cash to steadily upgrade the defenders to full premos.

      Simply can't go wrong with Fyfe, constantly wins contested ball, takes contested marks, does all of the hard stuff. Only weakness is his disposal by foot, could easily ave another 20-25 a game if he improved that flaw but most of his possessions are in traffic and usually kicking while under pressure. Beware round 10 bye. Come to think of it, your question has just prompted me to trade him in … thanks 🙂 (PS – similar player is Sloane – very consistent and both have scooby doo shaggy hairstyles!)

Jamie Elliot will cost more but has been very consistent, as has Parker. For about the same price there is Dalhouse or Bruest. Gunston is available for the same money as Martin but doesn't have mid DPP.

    Murphy > cotchin

    Polec > bartell

    Michie > acres

    I think Murphy is already at his peak and cotchin is going to get better so it is at least a break even if not an improvement and it allows me to bring in bartell for polec. Plan to swing bartell to def and bring in Jelwood for Langdon in a couple of weeks when jelwood bottoms out and langdon hits his peak.

    Any thoughts?

      The last two trades look fine but would keep Smurph. He's performed beyond expectation and can see no reason why this would drop off. Is there another trade that could help you bring in Bartel this week?

      Hi Antonio,

      I'd probably look at the following:

      Thomas down to Acres
      Webster or McDonald to Bartel
      Then I'd use the left over money to turn Polec into someone like Stevie J, Joel Selwood or Fyfe (I know Fyfe hasn't had the bye yet but he's a gun and you don't seem to have many round 10 bye players so he'll be covered. Long term, he'll be gold!)

      Just my thoughts, but you should try to get two guns in this week. You're defence is looking a little weak so I'd make at least one of your upgrade trades a defender and Bartel is one of the best.

      I'd expect him to be back for Rd10 but wouldn't put my house on it. GWS has been a little coy on the issue from the get go so who knows what the real story is.

      Been a Swans supporter I've certainly had my share of frustration over Mummy's injuries that can seem to drag on. Was probably a consideration along with the salary cap squeeze in the Swans not moving heaven and earth to try and keep him. Durability has always been an issue unfortunately.

      Would keep an eye on the Giants website to see if there are any status updates during the week.

      Can't go wrong with bartel I reckon. I think fwd line is your only chance to upgrade at the moment, but all the best options still have a bye to come .

      I'm still stuck with pyke too. Thinking about holding him for 1 more week as I have 20 scoring players this week. If he is still injured , or plays but scores less than 90 I am trading him next week to either sauce,Minson, goldy, depending on my cash situation.
