Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles NAB School worksheet
Analysis of the Sydney Swans v West Coast Eagles game:
Both sides decided to rest so many of their best 22 that it makes it really hard to gauge where both teams are in fantasy terms. Add to this the wet weather and greasy football and this turned out to be the worse game I’ve watched this preseason.
The biggest out for me was Nic Naitanui. Its a big risk selecting him now that we haven’t been able to see where he is fitness wise! He was locked in my team but now I have a ruck selection headache.
All the talk in this game was Franklin’s first game for Sydney. He was awful. He worked hard early but when things weren’t going his way as the game went on he got frustrated and gave away stupid frees. Granted he got no service and no doubt many will expect he’ll have a bigger influence on games with better players around him. However I’m not convinced and I’m not sure he’s the LOCK he’s been taunted as being all preseason: Have a read of this article before you decide!

Dom Sheed was Ok without been a standout. Worked himself into the game again but can’t help but get the feeling he is substitute bound in the real stuff. Not a rookie Lock for mine.
Xavier Ellis was the best rookie priced player on field. He choose to kick a lot with 17 of his 23 possesions being kicks. He did butcher it a fair bit but in the conditions I seen enough potential to lock him away as a midfield bench rookie.
Gary Rohan was Sydneys best forward – didn’t get a lot of it but there was really limited service on the night, missed a set shoot straight in front but apart from that didn’t put a foot wrong. Kicked 3 goals and should find his way onto many a supercoach’s forward bench.
Jeremy Laider did very well for the Swans down back. The ball was down there a fair bit and I don’t see him averaging 21 dissposals when the real stuf starts. Still worth a consideration for a bench spot down back.
Mike Pyke shared rucking duties equally with Tom Derickx. Expect he’d do more ruck work when the season starts propper but didn’t shoot out “select me” in this game. Derickx could get a round 1 start and if so will be a good R4 selection.
Craig Bird was good for the Swans in the guts but can’t see him producing similar numbers when Jack and Kennedy are back in that midfield.
Masten was best for the Eagles but again hard to gauge what his numbers will be like with Piddis and Shuey back in there.
Tell me your thoughts community.

How good was it that Buddy stunk it up!
HE BURNMAN
Yeah it was awesome. Hopefully plenty of the undecideds jump off him now which suits me to T. I know that wasn't your meaning btw.
Only wish Sandi mailed in a stinker on Wednesday as almost no one won't have him now after busting out that 156. May as well remove the R2 spot from all our teams until the byes as they will all be virtually carbon copy clones to start there. π
Another one of those none the wiser NAB games with the slippery conditions and each side fielding half a reserve team. Not sure the last time Reg Grundy was the SC BOG (by a country mile) ha ha.
Pity they are not televising the NAB 3 round of practice games as they should be a much closer simulation of true match conditions with most teams expected to field full strength or near full strength sides.
So we'll have to rely on match reports and SC scores now which can be a poor substitute to watching games with our own eyes.
Sandi played 13 games in 2011, 12 in 2012 and 7 last year. Pick him and burn a trade.
Don't pick him and then burn a trade after round 2 bringing him in when he's about sky rocket up $100K!
Only needs to probably play 5 or 6 rounds to make you a quick $200K and then you can dump him for a more durable elite.

Will brent colledge (123k fwd) get game time? 97sc from 15 touches
I'd be interested to know also. Rookies up FWD are a bit thin.
X. Ellis 23 touches for only 52 SC points due to his Disposal eff. of 43%
Still if he can find the footy 23 times a game has to be a lock. Slippery conditions last night.
I'm prepared to blame the conditions on that. He's managed to find a fair bit of it against two fairly defensive-minded teams.
Viv Michie over Ellis any day…. You watch lads, just watch.
Is Michie better than Dom Tyson?
he just didn't want to be tackled. as soon as he got the ball he kicked it…..anywhere.
Mid price Fwd/Mid dilemma. Who would stand up for the season?
Ben Howlett
Craig Bird
Robbie Gray
Matthew Wright
Dayne Zorko
Lachie Hunter
Wright
Zorko
Gray
Howlett
Hunter
Bird
in preference of that order for mine. would chuck Caddy in above Wright.
What about caddy?
Forgot Caddy. Does come into this group
I think everyone walked away from that game with the same thoughts: "_____ did pretty well, but can't see him doing that once _____ is back in the side".
The most that I've been able to take away from that is that X Ellis appears to be worth a shot, and I'm now just juggling whether the eye injury to Luke Parker or the calf injury to Tom Mitchell is likely to have any impact on R1.
Rohan is now Locked
Definitely not going to go with buddy this year. He is just to unreliable and inconsistent.
I have to agree Billy, IMO not worth it
Tough call after one game – first game for a new team, in the wet, not the best 22 on the park so not the best supply..
Does anyone think Gaff might be worth picking this year? He's going to be a terrific player once he learns how to break the tag, he can rack up the possessions If left unmarked and has good ball disposable. There are a few others around his price like Daisy who are probably a safer option but Gaff might be a good P.O.D.
Do you think he has he learnt to break a tag yet? If not, could be in for more of the same as last year.
Defiantly a talent and will be a superstar of the future. As you said the key is to break the tag. Had a great year in 2012 averaging 90 in SC running free without a tagger.
Then all the clubs were on to him last year. They basically had a run with player every week on him and he couldn't handle it.
Personally I wouldn't start with him and see how he goes then look at him throughout the year.
I think he's probably more of a pick for next year, may take him a little longer to get over the tag as you said. Not sure if i can bring myself to pick him after last year, but if he does start scoring well then i'll try and sneak him in.
Rhys Shaw vs Matt Suckling – the pig is getting plenty of love early, could Shaw be a sneaky POD at that price point?
Similar question from me but Grundy vs Suckling?
64 was Grundy's lowest average in 5 years. 70, 89, 86, 74 in 4 previous. Maybe there is some value there. Although, not sure why the decline last year…new role?
T Mitchell missed last night with a calf injury????
Would expect both to produce similarish output so you may as well pick Suckers and save the extra $35K.
Grundy's 161 may have put him on the radar after last night's game for a few but there was some very distorted scoring going on there I reckon. Only managed one tonne for the entire season in 2013, after playing every single game, and that was in a final. Suckers produced 7 tonnes in his most recent year of footy which was 2012 obviously.
Reg is a very durable player though, only missing 2 games in 5 years so that's one thing in his favour I guess.
Yeo is another to consider for virtually the same price as Grundy. Not sure he's done quite enough to find a spot in my team just yet. Simmo really rates him though so JS should be there and he's only going to improve with a good bunch of defenders around him.
Thanks SCaddict and SCKook. I guess I did get a little excited after his 160 odd from last night.
Both are in my team right now but if really good rookie defender options present at Rd1 then I may drop one or both.
Not sure about the likes of Georgiou, Langford, Langdon, Lemmens, Tippett and Clurey just yet. Need at least 3 of these guys to look like they will be a regular fixture in their teams before considering dropping Rhyce and/or Suckers.
Yeah it is definately a tough one SCA. I'm waiting to see when Docherty will be back. They said 4-5 weeks from surgey time, which is round 1 or 2. Reckon this kid will be a gun, almost considering having him on the bench until he returns, otherwise I'll have to burn a trade to get him in. Really depends if any of these blokes you mentioned are good enough to have on the field
Where's the Bulldogs Dockers game?
G'day Mick – How do you afford to have Rohan as a bencher? With what I reckon is a good balance of premiums, mids and rookies, I need to slot Rohan in at F5. What forward rooks do have in front of him?
Yes good question Kenny. I have him as an F6 myself.
It's conceivable that you could start a JKH, Lloyd, McDonough etc ahead of him if these guys are named for Rd1 though think I would start Rohan myself against GWS and see how things go.
Otherwise Mad Mick must have a midpricer i.e. $200K plus as his F6 or he may just be passing on Gazza Rohan altogether.
He's definately too pricey to have on the pine. The forward line has quite a few cheap bench option, defence is proving to be the headache this year.
Who's the best cheap defender option taking note that they are not keepers but to earn you $
Suckling at 312k will score well, but sometimes I think how does he fit in with Hawks defenders? will it effect his relevance to our SC teams either way to justify his price he will need to crack into the 80's
R.Shaw at 299k Sydney play GWS, Melbourne and Collingwood in the first 6 rounds and I mention the importance of Collingwood because he has scored 2 tons in their last 3 meetings. I do believe Rhyce Shaw could average more than Suckling after the first 6 rounds. Hope he averages 80+ till round 7 upgrade.
S.Shaw at 254k Adelaide has old rusty truck and have lost Henderson so now see him at real value only played 2 games last year but looks fresh in NAB and feel he has a new role in defence. His debut year in 2011 he averaged an impressive 72.7 and can't see why he can't match it or more.
Let us know who you think?
Also tell us who else is a likely prospect for a cheap option down back.
Looking at Shaw myself. Don't like suckling simply because he seems to be flavour of the month likewise with McDonald. I don't see other cheapie at the back worth having. I'm looking to offload Shaw and one of my cheap rucks for a quality defender at some stage.
Agree on franklin. Seen a lot of players in a lot of sports get big money deals and then loathe. Not saying he will necessarily do that but not taking the risk. Roman seems to be going ok but don't see a lot of game time for him moving forward with buddy, Tippett and Reed al ahead of him.
