Richmond V Melbourne NAB Challenge Review

And here for tonight’s NAB School worksheet

Jay Clark gave us the big tip the other week.

A young kid from Melbourne had caught his eye. And Jay Kennedy-Harris stamped his name in the forward line of just about every fantasy team in this nation here tonight. Listen into our chat with Jay here.

  • Jay Kennedy-Harris had it 13 times and snagged 3 sensational goals. But it was how he got them. He’s a player this kid and with the departure of Davey, Rhoden and Sylvia it’s hard to see him anywhere but in the best 18. $117,300 thanks very much
  • Dusty played across half back. My guts tell me they plan to stick him there a fair bit this season while he gets a tank. Racked up the possies – but what will happen when the defensive tag goes to him?
  • I’m bloody impressed by Alexis Georgiou (MELB – DEF – $102,400). 24YO mature age wookie who had the job on Vickery and torched him. Awkward kick.. but had 14 kicks @ 90% efficiency. Needs a leg up off the rookie list.. I can see him nail a spot in the 18.
  • Bernie Vince had it 28 times and looked at home in the guts. He’ll rise up the watch list for many and could kick into gear under Roos. I’m not convinced yet but this performance did his midpriced prospects no harm
  • Didn’t see enough from Dom Tyson, Viv Michie or Sam Blease to be sold on them. Will wait to see how they settle into NAB.
  • Ben Lennon & Liam McBean aren’t ready yet community. No for me.

NAB Challenge - Rich V Melb

I’ll upload my finished research sheet in the morning, and of course we’ll have Saturday night’s worksheet up in the morning folks,

What caught your eye folks?

  1. @PeterHiggo says:

As you can see, I don't have Lennon in starting 22 …… possibly could push out The Push-up?

Knights in starting 22. Looking forward to tracking his NAB progress.

    • @shanedeane says:

Will be watching Ellis – potential breakout contender, need to wathc to see if getting more midfield time. May be hard to assess against Melb mids though.

Can Sam Blease realise his potential may be a good POD, mature body at Rookie price?

Can Dom Tyson go up a notch with more game time?

      Where is Watts playing?

So many other potential rookie priced options to mention that will all get a look.

  2. Bricksavy says:

Melbourne, melba, melbs – no fwd line tonight but plenty to look for in the guts. Perenial couldabeen champion Jack Watts has nowhere to hide under roos. My interest has piqued. RIchmond. Well – let me know what you've got planned early Hardwick cause I got no time for theatrical coaching when it comes to the tiges. Play to win and show me how you intend on doing it. Martin – are you Jack watts in disguise?

  3. Adam says:

Keen to see how Martin impacts the game from half back.

  4. Stefanie says:

    Watching this game on

    Great to see footy again!!

  5. Disco Stu says:

There is nothing more I love to do than look at a game objectively and give a balanced view. But, gee. You gotta stand up and say. Melbourne. Where have you been boys. Welcome back, it’s going to good super coach year. Go Dees.
Friday night, coopers slab has copped a beating. Go boys.

  6. SCaddict says:

Wow Jay Clark was certainly right on the money with JKH.

Don't really need to see much more.

I think we can lock him away on our forward bench already!

    • throttlefinger says:

And those weren't easy goals he kicked. Finds space well and got a lethal boot. Think you're right about him finding a spot, SCaddict.

      • SCaddict says:

Ha ha I posted this before he kicked those last goals so it's even more of a captain obvious call now.

Don't know what Jock thought but I'm guessing he will probably take one of those green spots on rookie cheat sheet v3.

What did you make of the game from a Tiges supporter POV? Did you like Dusty playing off HB?

        • throttlefinger says:

Well, hard to read too much into NAB but didn't care for their effort. Especially with 3/4 of their starting 22 playing. Roos came to win and showed it. Dusty in the back is something that he should be eased into. Strip the varnish off, he was an empty calorie down there. May evolve. Just didn't seem to take to it.

Like the look of Lids. Richelieu look and showed his lethal boot. Rooks didn't show me anything worth mentioning. Crouching right about Lennon. Won't crack 22 in the early rounds, much less R1.

          What were your takeaways?

          • SCaddict says:

I didn't think Dusty was too bad actually and was one of your better players.

Dees definitely won in the desperation stakes.

Bernie Vince obviously looked impressive and Georgiou looks promising.

Didn't see enough of Michie or Tyson to form a strong opinion just yet but hey it's only NAB 1.

Wouldn't worry about your Tiges too much as they were just going through the motions in a largely inconsequential early scratch match. Hopefully no lingering effects for Newey and that hyper-extension.

            • throttlefinger says:

That's fair about Dusty. Just looked rusty and a bit frustrated out there to me. Other than Houli, Vickery and Lids, don't think anyone looked strong. But you're right, it's a scratch game.

Liked Vince and G-man as well. Like to see how everyone does with their forwards in there.

              • NutSack says:

Dustbin Martin still a hack. Worth waiting til bring him in later. Teams will expose him him the first quarter of the year I reckon.

  7. WombatsFC says:

    I reckon this game identified potential F7 or 8 and D 8

    • jockreynolds says:

Alexis Georgiou D8?? Surely he's a big chance to come off the rookie list

      • throttlefinger says:

He looked strong. Aggressive but poised.

      • WombatsFC says:

Spoton Jock. Who cares if his kicking style is reminiscent of Curly Austin, it's effective and he's tuff. Just gotta get him off the rookie list

    • throttlefinger says:

Want to see more of Blease. A bit sloppy yet liked his speed and did well on that goal. Not sure he'll make R1 22. DPP makes him worth more attention.

      • WombatsFC says:

        Hi Throttle,

I would disregard Blease if I was you. The former Neighbors star and Oakliegh Chargers captain (JKH) will be taking that small fwd role.

  8. Roosy in disguise says:

Long suffering Dees fan not trying to get too excited, but gees that was fun. I think with the new Hawks style of chipping, marking and decent tackles, we could see a significant rise in SC points for the Dees.

Had my eye on JKH and Georgiou, if they are picked rd 1 I'm locking em in!!! Don't forget Sam Blease is as cheap as the rookies, his skills are pretty ordinary but it's a warm body at that price!

Clarky didn't give a date on his return, avoid him! Also I would be very precautious with Vince, Trengove and other high scorers tonight.

As for Richmond, Bradley Helbig was impressive, not sure if he'll crack the real games though.

  9. NutSack says:

You seeee… with Melbourne………..well, its quite simple. Coaches play a massive part of a team.

Man Utd – same team but crap coach- there worst season in decades

Aussie cricket – same team, good coach- now smashing everyone.

Just the way it is. Roos will pull this team top 10-12 which is a fair increase in 3 months.

    • Super_Freak says:

Having a good coach is crucial. They inspire confidence and respect which translates to performances on the field. Reckon Roosy's trading has played a big part too, wish we got him to Brisbane.

Good to see the Dees on the way back up.

Oh and the how good is the smashing the Aussies are serving up in SA. Awesome!

  10. NutSack says:

Dusty 6 points last qtr- what more could you expect. still cant finish a game out.

    • Derek says:

Martin will have an up and down year. He will score well against the weaker teams but the better teams, especially the well coaches ones, will dust him up.
Martin is a bully and will beat up the weak teams but will go missing against the cats, hawks, Fremantle, swans etc
He was i my team. Gone now

      • Super_Freak says:

Agree Derek. Reckon Dusty will burn anyone who selects him this year. Much better options for his price.

Already had JKH sitting on my bench, looks impressive…Lock!

        • Daniel Beales says:

Changed Dusty to Wingard last night, at least i know where he's playing on the field, that he'll be consistent, and that he doesn't have the round 8 bye.

  11. @HeiroDAB says:

Wouldn't get to excited on Vince………. just like at crows could go 1 stunner followed by 4 average, then back to a stunner……… Mr consistency he is not………. Prove me wrong Mr Vince.

  12. @HeiroDAB says:

Also a horse tip to boot!!!! Is that the name of the horse? macca? cause #4 is legman either way put me money on R2 #4 @ doomben…….. paying $61. Hope this donkey gets up!

  13. Daniel says:

Impressive game for Melbourne. They have me stuck with 2 players at the moment. Who would pick out of Toumpas and Michie, Toumpas has impressed me with their intra club match and last nights match. Or do I get both? Thanks

  14. Mark says:

Can I please have some opinions on my team! I’m still not confident about some of the rookies I have chosen, like Sheed, Robertson and Honeychurch, but I will have a better idea about the rookies after the NAB is finished.

  15. taylorwoof says:

One bloke i am keeping a close eye on now is James Strauss (Pick 19, 2008 National Draft) from Melbourne.

    22 disposals at 81.8% DE, 7 Marks & 5 Rebound 50's.

He looked a much more confident player than i have seen in the past. He appeared much more composed, and his skills appeared quite crisp. If Melbourne continue with the 'possession heavy' game plan we saw the other night, then a few of their defenders may see a lot of ball.

There are definitely two defense spots up for grabs at Melbourne. Outside of Frawley, Garland, Grimes & Tom McDonald i can't see any 'definite starters' in their back six.

Priced at 268K is a little awkward, but i'm definitely looking forward to seeing him again.
