Supercoach 2014 interview with Jay Clark

Jay Clark knows his Supercoach.

He’s starred in the Fox Footy Supercoach Show and dominates proceedings with his fantasy footy insights as one of the Herald Sun’s footy journalists.

Unlike some blokes in the big smoke who claim to know a bit about their Supercoach – Jay is the real deal. Knows his stuff. He’s released the first version of his Supercoach team recently and we had him in the bungalow to talk through some of his selections.

Remember you can subscribe on iTunes as well – give us a rating and a comment on there if you can?

Here is some stuff we mention in the podcast this week:

(Make sure you’re registered first with Supercoach – confirm the invitation and you’ll be automatically added. Private Groups are different to the head-to head leagues of 18 so check the groups area).

What do you think about some of the options Jay puts out there for us?

  1. decs says:

    loving it so far mate!!
    some good suggestions

  2. Bailey says:

Great podcast once again fellas! My team as it currently stands has 15 rookies and I was wondering how many anyone else is going in with. Thanks and once again great podcast!

    • jockreynolds says:

Cheers Bails! Glad you enjoyed it mate Jay is a ripper. I'm looking to fill 13 rookie spots which I reckon is about right, gets very difficult to find the time to trade much more than that in. Last year's winner = 13, year before = 14

  3. Give It A Go says:

Top podcast yet again lads, interesting line of thought, I have 12 rookie places taken up, lot depends on the NAB outcome though!

  4. throttlefinger says:

Didn't think you could top last week's show yet the rabbit was pulled out the bull's backside on this one. Amazing insights all around.

Jock, is the qualifying league different from the donor's league or same thing? Early morning and wife nuked yesterday's coffee rather than make a freshy. Not working as fast.

    • jockreynolds says:

Gday Matty! Two different groups old mate – the donors league gives you a bigger crack at getting into the Divisions in 2015 because you're up against a significantly smaller group. We'll send you an invite to the Donor's Group during the week mate, thanks heaps for your very generous donation!

      • throttlefinger says:

Truly appreciate all the hard work you and the gang put into the site for the community, Jock. Pales to the amount of laughs and SC knowledge I receive in exchange.

Looking forward to a Yankee takeover in the donors.

      • Mike says:

jock do you think Brandon Jack from Sydney is a good pick?

  5. Rayza Ray says:

Interesting point that Jay made on Shannon Hurn Jock… Did have him on the watch list but now he's a lock.

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

Yep, he's been in my side for a while now and I've read he's earmarked for a role on the wing to make full use of his penetrative kick.

    • SCaddict says:

Yeah I'm pretty big on making sure the Eagles are well represented in my side this season. Have a super soft draw as a result of last year's mare and kick off with the Doggies, Dees and Saints in the first 3 rounds!

As such Hurn, Priddis, Shuey, Gaff, Ellis, Sheed, JJK, Darling and Nic Nat are all very prominently marked on my selection radar. Very likely to start the season with at least 3 or 4 of these boys.

      • SCannonymous says:

Good call SCadd – I think Shuey has to have a better season – I will give him some serious consideration.
If Hurn does push into the midfield, is Yeo a definite starter on the half back flank. I rate him highly, but can you see him adding much to his $334K price?
Where does Ellis fit into all of this? I fear he may just be selection pressure and insurance.

        • SCaddict says:

Yes Yeo will be another to keep tabs on in the NAB. Perhaps not as attractively priced as some of the other proven Eagles but we will have to see how he fits into the Eagles jigsaw this season.

    • jockreynolds says:

Yeah he's one of these blokes that's always on the fringe of relevance every pre-season. Personally I find it hard to see him moving into the guts I think he'd get exposed too easily the other way

      • Pieman1978 says:

Not just that Jock. The eagles like big bodied defenders. Which he is. He’d have to strip weight & run like buggery. Or like you say he’ll get smashed on turnovers. He’s not as aerobic as HL (new identity) shall we say & similar price. Same sort of player potential in that role & no interest for me. Some good games but can’t see 90+. If he was 200k then that’s a different story.

  6. Osh says:

Who's a safer pick Dustin Martin or Chad Wingard

    • Rayza Ray says:

      Dustin without blinking.

    • Cezza93 says:

Break down the port midfield, Hartlett, Boak, Cornes, Wines. See any outstanding class? Not a lot of it. Wingard will cop the tag.

      • Crowsfan says:

And dustin won't get a tag? Wow incredible that you think port has an average midfield…….how did they do so well in finals then? I suppose it was just a fluke, martin will be in every generic sc team as per usual………..

Boak – superior and tougher to martin….
Wingard – has the heart of a lion and speed and skills to match…….and this is a crows fan talking not a biased opinion.

    • Mike says:

    • Chaz says:

Worried about Martin possibly getting a new role and potentially being a bit over priced but could eat those words. Worried Wingard will be the Zorko of 2014!

  7. ShinbonerSpirit says:

Ripper of a podcast this week lads! John Bruyn and Jay Clark back-to-back, you've outdone yourselves.

"He's got the pace and evasiveness to get around, not just the cones, but the Melbourne defenders too." Based on 2013 alone, you'd think the cones would be more difficult to get past.

  8. taylorwoof says:

Once again another superb Podcast lads!

The Super Coach guests just keep rolling into Flapping Tarp Studios! Love it!!!

  9. Jarrad says:

Didn't think it was possible but i just added another 5-10 players to my watchlist. Superb podcast fellas, A-grade stuff.

    • SCannonymous says:

I agree Jarrad. Lots of little insights from someone who gets to a number of training sessions. I think we almost need a HiggoNABber spreadsheet to keep track of NAB cup developments.
I look forward to the podcast each week – it's a great 30min escape.

  10. Pieman1978 says:

Have to agree with Wayno. Which cones was he eluding to? I have tried a mid pricers strategy in the past which was a spectacular failure, so never again. But I was impressed with some of the rookies he peeled off to have a look at. Could be some gold in there. Great show fellas. Loved it

  11. Cezza93 says:

Really good POD with Hurn! Had him back in 2012 really impressed but only averaged 85ish. However i question his endurance as a wingman i mean the guys built like a brick sh*t house can he run with? Will watch the NAB

    • jockreynolds says:

Yeah agree – I made a reply above along the same lines, I see him being exposed defensively and surely wouldn't have the tank required?

  12. Kevan says:

Great podcast Jock. Agree with you %100, Guns and Rookies is NOT dead. Just need to look a bit deeper for the rookies who will make cash. If you leave out Caddy/Daisy/Savage/Docherty/Tex, and downgrade these to rookies, it frees up so much catch to put Premiums(or damn near close as premiums) into your team. Starting with 6 rookies on the field is old style, but old style still feels like the right style.

    • yurkins says:

Cant help myself I have to have a throw at one or two mids to get the most our of cashing cows or upping him to a premo. I liked Hibberd for this last year. He did enough to be in all year.
Th year before I took Motlop. He was traded up.
There is a lot of satisfaction (in overall finishing order and in leagues) in seeing the talent and upgrading them.

  13. Pieman1978 says:

I tried to post this earlier but it seems to have disappeared. I listened to the interviews with John & Jay back to back. I'd suggest to the community hat it's well worth doing. The strategies of the 2 great men couldn't be any further apart. I'll be backing John, he won last year for a reason. I have issues with Jay's team. The most prevalent being that by the time he's finished his corrective trades he might not have any left. The 200-350k market s fraught with danger. As John alludes to it's ok to have 1-2 spot fires. But not 8. I think that Jay could easily end up in that category. And quite possibly more than 8. It could be genius or a complete flop. At this point ill put my house on the latter.

  14. Dools says:

Man tht was excptional on a scale of 1 to earth shattering I think yu ads ust hit Asesomenessness ! Loved the insght from a fellow Kat he more then justified hi play and entertaining to boot

    • Pieman1978 says:

Spot on Dools. Listen to the last 2 podcasts back to back. Moses may have parted the Red Sea, but this goes way beyond!

      • Dools says:

        ‘day Pieman1978
That was Old Testment mate! Could this be the year of the “Jock”
Chinise New Year and all that I feel ‘ve just been to a wedding and someone decided to feed All the guests with top notch vintage and enough grub maybe to feed all the followers .
Jock as the Messiah Naw not even God would call his other Son that surely??? I thought his name would have been Erik or maybe Calvin but Jock Hmmmm Much to ponder…LOL

  15. rhino says:

Hey Jock, just wondering if you could help me, I clicked on the link for the league but when it shows me all the names that are in it, but I’m not on there, could you give me a rundown on exactly how it works, thanks.

  16. rhino says:

I'm thinking of a 1 prem and 2 midprice and 1 rookie ruck, thoughts? Thinking Minson, Sandilands, hickey, and king.

    • PJ8 says:

Not bad, you can do the ruck loophole every week and that will help. Personally id go with Dixon in the fwd line and have a DPP link.

  17. MattRio says:

Hey Guys Great Podcast what are your thoughts on North Melbourne Cameron Delaney at $242,700, Rhyce Shaw at $299,400 and Sam Wright at $297,000. If you were to pick two who would they be?

  18. SamuelScoach says:

    Hello Jock and Co

Who would be the outright best forward 400k-465k

    • PJ8 says:

Top 5 in order in this bracket IMO
      1. Zorko – after 2nd year blues should go back to a top 10 FWD
      2. T.Mitchell – SC scoring machine
      3. Gray – breakout contender
      4. Watts – breakout contender
      5. Sylvia – new club, better club. Has avg. 90 before at a poor club

    • Philthy says:

Jack Gunston, check his stats in the stats interface notably the tons% v <70% and his final series would've only added to his tons…

      • throttlefinger says:

I'm digging on Gunnysack. Strongly being considered as the alt for Zorko and someone who I could quickly upgrade to Danger or Dusty.

    • SCaddict says:

Pav has to be seriously considered too if he's up and about in the NAB.

  19. sam says:

how much do i need to donate to be a part of the donors group?

    • SCaddict says:

P.S. I'm sure whatever you can afford would be fine (e.g. $5). A donation is a donation after all.

  20. rhino says:

Just wondering who people think will get the tag at stkilda?

  21. JEREMY MORGZZ says:

    • SCannonymous says:

Motlop is injured I understand – maybe 6 weeks? Rioli suspended for 1 week and Zorko having a pretty good pre-season. If you're picking from those three maybe Rioli?

      • Philthy says:

Rioli does things that score BIG!! Motlop had 7 x 100+ from 21 gms, Rioli 6 from 13

    • taylorwoof says:

Both will have delayed starts to season 2014. I'd steer clear of both. Was keen on Motlop until his injury.

  22. Wattsie says:

I'm tossing up between Martin and Boomer. On one hand I don't know how Martin will be after the contract wrangle last year and on the other hand Boomer isn't getting any younger. Thoughts?

    • SCannonymous says:

Martin is likely to get some time in the back half. I'm not sure how much this might affect his scoring, but I think he could have a good year.

      • Wattsie says:

Thanks mate, I was leaning towards Dusty, saves a bit of coin. I think Boomer did well last year best he came in about a third of the way through and was fresh compared to everyone else.

    • Gilly says:

Each year I think this is the year that Boomer's age will catch up with him, each year he proves me wrong. Surely I cant be wrong again!!

    • Crows fan says:

      Neither at those prices

      • SCannonymous says:

Hi Crows fan, what does your forward line look like at the moment? I have Dangerfield, Martin, Crameri, Caddy, Stringer, Fasolo, Gartlett… I'm not sure about Stringer and I need to get in one more keeper, maybe Franklin? Your thoughts?

        • Crowsfan says:

Franklin could go well at Sydney because he is pretty good around the packs, and we know how many bounces there will be inside 50 for sydney, some are saying the opposite and that he won't have room to move, I'm just staying out of it until I see him perform. No buddy for me until later in the season.

My forwards so far are Danger, roughy, tom bellchambers (backup as running lobbe and 3 rookie rucks), J-pod, rohan, L taylor, garlett, honeychurch

But nothing is set in stone atm, also thinking of reconfiguring and bringing wingard from mid to forwards. This could get rid of j-pod or one of the rookies depending on how I sacrifice others.

  23. Give It A Go says:

    Hi Community

Whats your thoughts on going Goldstein, Naitanui , Thurlow and Nankervis as rucks, could save on trades and get off to a flier if they perform well.

    What do you recon?

    • Wattsie says:

      Hi Give it ago,

The strategy of set and forget for rucks is great but usually is one premium and one to upgrade. I'd worry about Nic Nat being at his best as he's still being injury managed. I've chosen Nankervis as have most and am tossing up between Thurlow and Currie as R3 and R4. I'd think about down grading Nic Nat to a Brodie Grundie and look to upgrade the second ruck later in the year.

      All the best

      • SCannonymous says:

You talk a fair bit of sense Wattsie.

      • Crowsfan says:

Good advice and there's plenty of opportunities this season for mid priced rucks, and even ruck rookies.

I wouldn't go and buy 2 premium rucks straight away, look at reliability and match time, ie a ruckman who doesn't have lots of competition within their own side for a spot.

price should be a factor too of course and there's some decent ruck buys that could really put a team in a good position both scoring and profit wise.

    • Crowsfan says:

Goldstein was my no.1 ruck last year and was a great pick, can't see him having a bad year this time around.

Natanui not convinced but the price is decent and if 100% fit could see him move back into the top ruck territory easily.

In simpler terms I think your ruck picks are very good.

  24. Paulo says:

Heya – Jocko just had a look at your man Robertson from the lions. Looks a special talent, in the same mould as young Ollie Wines.

  25. Kongyyy says:

What about beau waters at 400k

  26. Pieman1978 says:

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Sam Docherty. Awkwardly but under priced for mine. When he didn’t have a vest last year he was pretty good. The number of vests he had last year has affected his price. Thoughts

    • Liam says:

He is not in my team right now but someone to watch closely in the NAB challenge. If he plays well and gets himself a round 1 selection he could be worth the punt, although there are more cheaper rookies to choose from this season: Cutler, Fuller, McDonald etc.

      • Pieman1978 says:

I was really only thinking of him as a stepping stone. But he’d need to get to 400K & quickly. He’s worth keeping an eye on. He’s not a POD as lots will have him. I’m still a guns & rookies man personally. Not buying into this mid-pricer business.

      • SCannonymous says:

Hi Pieman and Liam, I think you pay a bit extra for someone like Docherty when your not convinced of the rookies getting early or regular games. I'm not sure about Cuter starting R1. Fuller sounds like he should and McDonald should also (but there is a fair bit of depth amongst the developing players at the Roos – he may even have to do some more time in the VFL). I don't think Docherty is a bad choice but it may come down to NAB form and R1 team selection perhaps.

    • Gilly says:

G'day Pieman, as you can see below I have Docherty in my starting squad at the moment. I am also seeing him as a stepping stone, his price is awkward but I think he has a bit more upside than Suckling in terms of rate of gain and he isn't coming back from an acl.

Hopefully a few cheap rookies pop up in the NAB challenge

  27. Gilly says:

I have come off a lengthy off season, so this is my first serious attempt at a team. Obviously NAB form and injuries may cause some changes, but interested in thoughts.

Def. Bartel, Hanley, Birchall, Docherty, Laidlaw, McDonald, Fuller, Kolodashnij

Mid. Ablett, Pendle, Griffen, Beams, Savage, Michie, Sheed/Ellis, Crouch, Polec, Dunstan

    Ruck. Lobbe, Sandilands, Nankervis, Thurlow(fwd)

    Fwd. Dangerfield, Martin, Wingard, Dixon(ruc), Fasolo/Lamb/Rohan, P.Jackson, T.Lewis, Garlett

Depending on some of the option have 40-70k left over. Not sure on having both Wingard and Martin, thinking should maybe turn one of them into Buddy.

If I did that I might have enough $$$ to change Savage to Ellis, plan with Savage was to hopefully make a quick 100k then down to a fresh rookie.

Probably like everyone and tried a few ruck combo's. Thinking other option instead of Lobbe is Mumford. No doubt will change my mind tomorrow and head down another path.

Anyway let me know what you think.

    • crowsfan says:

I think you have a solid team there, although not quite convinced on birchall for the price.

Mid looks great, doubtful on savage and as he is what I would call a very common pick leaving him out could actually be a blessing, I don't see him being worth more than 450k anytime soon even if he performs.

Great ruck picks, although of course sandi is risky, but price is right.

lobbe should have a great year, there's always sam Jacobs but not convinced.

buddy is not the ebst idea imo but you never know, martin is also expensive and although a great player not convinced, if I had to pick wingard or matin i'd go wingard.

Maybe consider a big forward that can kick a bag and win you some of the tougher matches ie j.pod or somebody similar, that could be seen as very risky too, although remember he will be their no.1 and is very fit and ready for his new club.

      • Pieman1978 says:

I got torched by Birchil last year as well. With Suckling back his role may change. Suckling is an awesome kick. I'm not convinced on buddy either. He wont have the space like he had at the MCG. I like Polec. I think he could be great value. Also if your going with Sandlilands you must have bench cover. He wont play 22 games. 15 would be a good result. The only way I can seeit working with sandilands is 3 midpricers.

    • SCannonymous says:

Solid team Gilly, I really like the Ruck and a half approach, with Thurlow (is Apeness a better pick?) and Dixon as swappers if Sandi does not work out.
A lot of people seem pretty confident about T.Lewis, I'm not sure yet. Who is P.Jackson?
      Mids look very strong!
      Good luck.

      • Gilly says:

Just thought that with Bellchambers down for a while he might be a chance to get a few games, but I don't know much about either of them.

    • Gilly says:

Thanks crowsfan,Pieman and SCannoymous I appreciate your thoughts.

The rucks is giving me grief, really can't get settled on what I want to do, was originally thinking Grundy and Longer, but not sure how Grundy will stand up to a full season of being the main man at 19. He has got some tricks but he might get bashed up, Longer job security ??? anyway will continue working.

I hear what you are saying about savage, being a hawks fan have watched him for a while, just reckon he can average 85 early which generates some quick cash.

I was thinking of having Roughy (had him all last year) but losing dpp takes off some of the gloss and was trying to get a structure without any key forwards.

Don't know much about Taylor Lewis other than what I have read in "The Prospectus" so at this stage he is just making up the numbers. P.Jackson is Paine Jackson from Collingwood, Brisbane are looking for a tall forward and they went after him so assuming he might get some games.

Thanks again for the comments, all the best for the year.

  28. matt says:

i've had Naitanui as my lock in ruck for the last month and its looking very likely he will play round one but im starting to have doubts as iv read he will be managed throughout the year. what are you thought on him do you think he could be red vested at times or even rested once ore twice over the season. any thought on Naitanui would be great.

  29. Grizz says:

would love to get some opinion on my early selections……. trying to stick with as many rookie/guns as possible, but pricing makes it tough, so have opted with mids that are at the higher end looking to get back to premiums quickly. Would love the communities thoughts……

B: Mitchell. S, Laidler, Atley, Hanley, Docherty, Kolodjashnij. K, Cutler, Fuller

M: Pendles, Watson, Cotchin, Beams. D, Ablett, Shuey, Martin. J, Ellis. X, Dunstan, Morabito

    R: Leuenberger, Longer, Nankervis, Thurlow

F: Danger, Franklin, Zorko, Lamb, Garlett. D, Taylor. L, Billings, Honeychurch

Leaves me with about 88K. Other thoughts are M. Murphy to bounce back at under 500K, Hurn in defence, Jetta up forward and getting docherty out. But cant have them all !!

    • matt says:

your midfield isn't going to be great for round 9 byes

      • Grizz says:

cheers Matt. See what you are saying…. round 8 would have out Pendles, Cotch, Beams, Ablett and Martin. Would be a very big hole to fill. All rucks are sitting in round 10 bye also. Back to the drawing board!

  30. bricksavy says:

Lots of people picking Kolodjashnij – look I hate to tell you all but here's a tip – Lachie Plowman. (pick 3)

Check his stats from last year and then think again about kolodashnij…….

    • matt says:

plowman is a key position player and kolodjashnij is a rebounding defender which will average 70 ish

  31. scooter says:

With all the value in the mid s from blokes like clay e beams michi e Tyson polec with high job security do u think u could get away with loading your mids with these guys and pumping up Ur fwd line where there isn’t much value so far my mids are gaz pendles dayne beams daisy Martin c beams michie polec and fwds are danger Dusty rough buddy Parker lamb

  32. Coco jumbo says:

Loved the pod caste. First post for me ever. This strategy makes sense considering how many premiums drop into the bargain bin at one time or other during the season. Xavier Ellis is a great call if he can hold of the injuries. No risk no glory.

  33. Matt says:

Could somone give me their opinion on the following (already have Pendlebury by the way)

Option 1: GAJ, Cyril Rioli, no cash left

Option 2: Priddis (or someone around that price range), WIngard, 100k left.

Thinking option 1 but not 100% sold on Cyril

  34. Coco jumbo says:

Not convinced by Cyril. Have a look at Dixon for a similar price. Cyril will score regular 80’s but also has that hamstring. Dixon is looking fit and can really hit the big numbers.
