Fantasy Footy Radar 2013 – Robbie Gray

Published by Jock on

This kid reminds me a lot of myself at a young age. Talented beyond belief. Incredibly effective in an unfashionable looking way. Ladies bloody love him. Before he made the big time he would get out of bed at 4am to head down to the abattoirs there in Adelaide to pack meat. A good boy.

However I’m unable to draw a parallel between Robbie Gray’s terrible run with injury and my own 927 games with the Karingal Bulls Football Club. He comes with a discounted price tag in 2013. Just like the factory damaged crap from Not Quite Right. Now I’m partial to the box of Savoys from the old NQR when the price is right… but how willing will I be to cough up my hard earned Supercoach and Dreamteam salary cap on my old mate Robbie?

The facts:

  • 2013 Price: Supercoach: $301,800, Dreamteam: $276,100
  • 2013 Position: MID/FWD
  • 2012 averages: 71 SC, 67 DT (2 games only)
  • 2011 averages: 91 SC, 82 DT (22 games)
  • 2010 averages: 76 SC, 68 SC (11 games)
  • 25 in March 2013

Jock’s Verdict:

I love this kid and really do wish him the very best in 2013. However I can’t ignore his injury history.

He completely and utterly stuffed his knee in round 4 last season and some suggest that it was the most sickening footy injury of all time. A big call – especially if you saw my compact fracture of the femur in the forward pocket at the Pines in 1971 (before kicking 12 goals in a losing grand final 5 weeks later). In fact Robbie’s injury rap sheet stretches right back to before he was drafted where he missed the AFL Draft camp because he was injured. His career between then and now is pock marked in outages due to injury, but also limited output due to playing injured.

Now injuries are always a concern in this caper folks there is no doubt about that. There is also no doubt in my mind that if this kid gets through a strong pre season and stays on the park all year he may be one of the selections of the season. But all we can do is look at the past when we make a selection call – and Robbie’s injury rap sheet, his back related hamstring trouble together with one of the worst bung knees in history is just too much for me to overlook.

Sorry Robbie – unless you absolutely smash em in the preseason mate I can’t see you ending up in my starting team mate.

I picked him up in 2010, where he was a big disappointment for me, but I won't even consider picking him this year. Ken Hinkley has said he'll be giving Gray at least 12 months off to recover, so he won't get a preseason in and following the timeline set out for him, the earliest he'd be back would be RD4.

So even with a Round 4-5 return, you're really not going to be expecting big scores from a guy coming back from that kind of devestating knee injury.

Dools · 22/12/2012 at 14:58

Horrible injury takes more then a year to recover from barring reinjury (ie Cats D. Menzel or favouring the the other knee to the extent that the un injured knee is more likly to strain….Big NO from me !
Might be worth a look at in the closing rounds of the comp if he plays well..I think he will plumett in value by round 11, 6 games into his seaon if the rumors are true he wont start till round 4 or 5 or more likely 6/7

M.J · 22/12/2012 at 15:55

Hey Dools, didn't realise he was looking at coming back in so late, thought he might be right for NAB .. I must be dreaming :/ where did you hear round 4 or 5 ?? Its a definite no if he is not right to go round 1

Dools · 24/12/2012 at 01:20

Hi M.J, I didn't see the mail from you until aftre the Chrissy pod cast.
Horrible injury 12 months re-hab MINIMUM – PT ADL need this guy to play. Are you seriously thinking they will risk him in the NAB?
We wont see him till rnd 6 and with No Pre-season to date except for running behind him . he will be nursed along RED vest at best.

The coloring of IPA solely depends on the amount of malts
used. After the great depression in the country and two centuries have passed, the sparkling Shiraz
was introduced in the market by Australian wine makers. So,
if you want to get the most out of your wine,
or you know someone who is passionate about wine, then make sure
that it is stored correctly and invest in a wine fridge.

Independent reps should be armed with as much sales

and marketing collateral as possible. Towns

in a state representative district should be grouped together when part of a school

region. They try the “warm list” strategy

and then simply run out of people to talk to.
