This kid reminds me a lot of myself at a young age. Talented beyond belief. Incredibly effective in an unfashionable looking way. Ladies bloody love him. Before he made the big time he would get out of bed at 4am to head down to the abattoirs there in Adelaide to pack meat. A good boy.
However I’m unable to draw a parallel between Robbie Gray’s terrible run with injury and my own 927 games with the Karingal Bulls Football Club. He comes with a discounted price tag in 2013. Just like the factory damaged crap from Not Quite Right. Now I’m partial to the box of Savoys from the old NQR when the price is right… but how willing will I be to cough up my hard earned Supercoach and Dreamteam salary cap on my old mate Robbie?
- 2013 Price: Supercoach: $301,800, Dreamteam: $276,100
- 2013 Position: MID/FWD
- 2012 averages: 71 SC, 67 DT (2 games only)
- 2011 averages: 91 SC, 82 DT (22 games)
- 2010 averages: 76 SC, 68 SC (11 games)

I love this kid and really do wish him the very best in 2013. However I can’t ignore his injury history.
He completely and utterly stuffed his knee in round 4 last season and some suggest that it was the most sickening footy injury of all time. A big call – especially if you saw my compact fracture of the femur in the forward pocket at the Pines in 1971 (before kicking 12 goals in a losing grand final 5 weeks later). In fact Robbie’s injury rap sheet stretches right back to before he was drafted where he missed the AFL Draft camp because he was injured. His career between then and now is pock marked in outages due to injury, but also limited output due to playing injured.
Now injuries are always a concern in this caper folks there is no doubt about that. There is also no doubt in my mind that if this kid gets through a strong pre season and stays on the park all year he may be one of the selections of the season. But all we can do is look at the past when we make a selection call – and Robbie’s injury rap sheet, his back related hamstring trouble together with one of the worst bung knees in history is just too much for me to overlook.
Sorry Robbie – unless you absolutely smash em in the preseason mate I can’t see you ending up in my starting team mate.
