Round 22 Supercoach Scouting Report

VonCrow_smallThere are several words I’d like to use to describe what happened in Round 21 last week, but unfortunately Jock has told me I’ll be sent straight to the tribunal if I say any of them on here. Howdy folks it’s Barron Von Crow here and welcome to our Round 22 Supercoach Scouting Report!

Injuries! Suspensions! My dog pooped on the carpet! This and more are what went wrong for me and many Supercoachers over the weekend as it seemed the AFL gods unleashed a tidal wave of carnage that’d make Noah cry for his mother. It was a complete A-Z of damage done to our Supercoach sides as the likes of Dayne Beams, Ben Reid, Travis Cloke, Scott Pendlebury, Jamie Elliot, Josh P. Kennedy, Michael Barlow, Jimmy Bartel, Stevie J, Callan Ward, Troy Menzel, Dale Thomas, Jack Grimes, Charie Dixon and Mark LeCras are all facing time off due to injuries, to go along with Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey and Nat Fyfe being sent to the change rooms after being suspended. It’s going to be a tough week for many, and it may be a case of only the lucky survive, but whatever condition you find your team in there’s always a chance that your team will come through for you. So let’s get moving and see if we can’t at least get some good luck with our Captains picks for Round 22!

Also, remember to look out for the red and green Supercoach scores, RED = bad, GREEN = good which may help you out when it comes to picking your captains for the week

First up, our Top 10 rankings for Round 21.

Image 1

Matthew Lobbe got the job done in his game against the Gold Coast, posting 178 Supercoach Points in the Powers win with 16 possies, 12 tackles and 56 hitouts next to his name on the stat sheet. His teammate Robbie Gray also made the Top 10 list with 148 Supercoach Points. Lance Franklin found himself busy, kicking 9.4 along the way to 168 Supercoach Points and Brisbane made up for their poor performance last week with a fantastic win against Collingwood, with Zorko, Hanley and Adcock making the top 10 list for the week (with our favourite Tom Rockliff 2 points shy from polling with 137 Supercoach Points). It was some vintage Matthew Pavlich on Sunday, scoring only his 5th 100+ score for the year with a terrific haul of 143 Supercoach Points. Young Josh Caddy showed why so many picked him at the start of the year, with a 28 possession, 140 Supercoach Point game and finally it was the young Rising Star hopeful Matthew Bontempelli doing his team proud with 139 Supercoach Points to round out the top 10 list for the week.

We must also consider Captain worthy scores from the likes of Tom Rockliff (137), Stefan Martin and Dion Prestia (135), Devon Smith (134), Harry Taylor (132), Michael Barlow (131), Trent Cotchin and Sam Jacobs (130).

And that’ll leave our Top 10 rankings for the year at

Image 2

Pearce Hanley moves into 6h place overall, taking over from Brent Harvey and Dangerfield. Dayne Zorko has also snuck into equal 10th with his terrific score in Round 21. The rest of the list has remained static.

Captain Pick(s):

Lobbe was fantastic last week and the last time he went big for a score of 150 in Round 12, he backed it up with a 145 against Sydney the next week. That now makes 5 of his last 6 games where he’s scored 100+ and he could be a contender here. Murphy has scored well against Port in the past, and has been in some very consistent form as we head towards the end of the year. He and Travis Boak could be nice VC options to look at as well. And it’s always nice to see Robbie Gray back and scoring well and in his last month he has scores of 134, 126 and 148 to his name. Another solid option for us to consider as well.

Captain Pick(s):

Let me tell you something Community, I’m bloody pissed off with my Crows at the moment. Come and support the team they said, be the 19th Man they said. Fighting for the Top 8 and they produced a shocking effort that stuffed up more than a few Supercoachers out there. I even went to all the trouble of bringing my bloody cat to Adelaide Oval, thought he might like to see some of his feline brethren in action and he just looked at me like “what is this rubbish?” and ran off. Unacceptable. There are at least 2 Crows who aren’t on my list though, and they are Sam Jacobs and Rory Sloane. Jacobs has a 3 round average of 138 and has scores of 126 and 133 in his last 2 against North. He has struggled against Goldstein in the past (See Round 9 when he was ineffective and subbed out), but he’s been red hot and I think he can produce us another good score here.

Goldstein is our 2nd ruckman worth taking a look at in this one, with a 5 round average of 139. His last 5 games have been terrific for us in Supercoach with scores of 166, 131, 133, 143 and 122 and although he hasn’t scored big against the Crows in the past, he could break that trend here. Harvey will miss the game after he was handed a 3 match suspension, so if he does fly down to Tasmania he’ll have to spend his time picking apples rather than playing football.

Captain Pick(s):

Jobe is back to save us! Watson played his first game in 9 weeks against West Coast and produced a solid 93 in his first hitout. His scores against GC certainly do look good and I think he may be a very popular replacement for teams that are carrying one of those injured Premo midfielders. Heppell had no issues finding the ball, even with Watson back as he racked up 39 possessions, although only returned a bit of a dissapointing score of 119. All 3, along with Goddard who has a fantastic career averages against the Suns could be options.

The Gold Coast youngsters have been a bit herky jerky without Ablett, playing some very inconsistent football. Guys like Prestia have gone 84, 123, 59, 135, Bennell has scored 93, 35, 115, 99, 144 and David Swallow hasn’t ripped out a 100+ score since Ablett was injured. I’d likely skip them this week, even if a few like Prestia and Bennell can score big.

Captain Pick(s):

I’m sure when Collingwood looked at this matchup at the start of the season they thought it might be a nice chance to rest up some players before the Finals. Now they find themselves struggling to stay in sight of the Top 8 and injuries to star players such as Pendlebury, Cloke, Beams along with other handy players like Ben Reid and Jamie Elliot have turned their season on it’s head. We’ll hold out hope that Pendlebury can play, but it is looking doubtful at this stage. Lucky for Collingwood GWS have their own injury issues with Jon Patton suffering a terrible ACL injury and and their Co-Captains Phil Davis needing to pass a concussion test to play and Callan Ward also looking like he’ll be out for a few weeks with a calf injury.

This could be a tough one to pick though. The hope would be Sidebottom continues his fantastic scoring pace, but he may become the #1 man in the Collingwood team now and could face some heavy scrunity from the opposition. And Dane Swan has scored well against the Giants in the past, but so far this year he has only cracked the ton in 3 of his 16 games that he’s played. I might stay away from this one, although part of me is considering a VC on Swan and hoping that the rest will have recharged his batteries a bit.

Matt Priddis is only owned in 4% of teams at the moment, but I have a feeling that percentage may skyrocket by the time lockout hits and he is a fantastic guy to pick if you’re looking to trade out on of your injured premiums. He’s also a very good choice to consider for your VC or C pick, having produced scores of 149 and 155 in his last month of football and is the 4th ranked player in Supercoach at the moment.

Captain Pick(s):

Sam Mitchell has the runs on the board in previous games against the Cats, but it’s Jordan Lewis who is the Hawk in the best form at the moment, with a 3 round average of 144 and a 5 round average of 129. His last two games have also included scores of 165 (VS Melbourne) and 145 (VS Fremantle). I know a lot of people are looking at bringing in Lewis for a Beams/Pendlebury/Fyfe type replacement, so you could do worse than a VC on him here.

And for the Catters we have Joel Selwood, who has a 5 round average at 135. Will be a very popular Captain choice this week I think, or a VC for those who have Tom Rockliff playing in the next game on Sunday.

@ The Gabba Averages: 89.5 Supercoach Points, High Score of 138

Captain Pick(s):

Rocky looks a goer here, with a 5 round average of 144 and scoring 158 last time he played the Dockers. Crowley went to Hanley in Round 14, but it will be interesting to see if they try and stop Rockliff this time around. No matter what though it’s really a battle you can’t win since whichever one is left free is likely to get off the chain.

Captain Pick(s):

Lance Franklin was a popular pick last week and he paid off big time, so I expect there will be more than a few that roll the dice a second time with Franklin as their Captain. He hasn’t played the Bulldogs in 3 years, but he could be in for another large goal haul again this week.

Captain Pick(s):

Cotchin was fantastic last week on his way to 130 Supercoach Points. He also scored a terrific 168 last time he played the Saints, so it could be a sign of him peaking right as the important end of the season is about to start? Brandon Ellis has also been on fire these last 3 rounds with an average of 128 to his name.

BARRON VON CROWS CAPTAIN SELECTION(S):

I’m going to put that old classic on the stereo this weekend, the Joel Selwood Vice Captain, Tom Rockliff as Captain one. The simple fact of the matter is with Pendlebury, Fyfe, Beams and JPK all out I’m really hurting for decent picks so it’s almost a case of take the best of what’s left on the field!

So who are you guys looking at making your VC/C picks this week? And left field choices or playing the favourites? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on the Twitters @BarronVonCrow.

  1. Gab says:

    Jesse White for captain this week?

  2. WombatsFC says:

    Heppell? I reckon Shane Kersten is a better captains option than Heppell this week.

  3. Skippa says:

    Any support for Nic Nat as captain this week, like a lot of us I'm without 5 premo midfielders this week and need to go different if I'm any chance of winning!

  4. The Garbo says:

    I’m going a priddis rockliff combo this week.
    Freo with no fyfe or Barlow just opens the door even wider for rocky to get his hands on the ball.

    And Fingers crossed that Crowley has either a precautionary rest or tags adcock

  5. Mozz says:

    I'm really nervous about Rockliff being tagged by crowley. Is it too risky to put the C on him? Because crowley will either go to him of Hanley, so it's a 50/50 chance

  6. Wattsieesq says:

    Sloane into Rocky for me

  7. throttlefinger says:

    Double S attack: Sloane to Selwood. Although maybe just for shits to do Cameron to Hartung.

  8. Peanuts says:

    Dal Santo VC …. Barron's stats highlight a potential hug POD. I have him and perhaps this could be his chance to repay me for his recent form slump.
    Thanks Barron, a very useful article each week.

  9. Pecks says:

    Chasing majestic wisdoms….

    Bring in
    Rocky and Buddy?
    or
    Rocky and Murphy?
    or
    Priddis and Lewis?
    or
    Priddis and Sloane?

  10. Crowmagnon says:

    I think the Baron looks just fine the way he is. Maybe you should be talking to Swanny.

  11. Chubby says:
