supercoach crunch time

The last week of the regular season is here.

We put it all on the line this week. We make desperate lunges to make the eight. We agonize over decisions to spend a trade or hold a trade. We wonder if we might just sneak into the top four.

And there are some gigantic issues facing many of us this week. Tom Nicholls. Andrew Swallow. Nic Nat. Danger. The list goes on.

Take our hand and let us guide you gently but firmly into the last round of the regular season – and towards the big dance.

  1. Amos Frank says:

Hey Jock you are a legend

  2. Will says:

    Hi Jock
Is it worth trading down Nicholls for a rook ruck like brody grundy. This will give me enough money to upgrade priddis to beams who is looking like an outstanding upgrade target. Note: I will only have 1 trade left if I do this however all other contenders in my main league have no trades left.

  3. Chris says:

    Thoughts on Chris Yarran,297 k?

    Recent scores 75 and 80

Only dipped so much in price due to injury and being sub.. Has scored a 130+ this year

    • john says:

you have to be joking mate!

    • cotchandmurph says:

Thats so true Chris, i had him at start of the year and was happy, injury and sub affected scores are why he has dipped in price, maybe get him in as a finals POD

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

Stay clear mate. The Carlton smalls (Garlett, Betts, Yarran) are too unpredictable for my liking.

  4. JB says:

Who to trade OUT Shuey, Nic nat, Nicholls, Hanley with 4 trades left? thoughts …

  5. Eagler says:

G’day Jock. Had my best score ever 2525.
Thanks to you and all the people on the site I’m setting up nicely for winning my work league this season.

  6. Rocksta says:

Great Tip Wayno, and right on the money Higgo.
Beamer is a gun and will score in the top 5 averages for the rest of the season IMO.
But Higgo, you are right, most people won't have the money nor enough trades for this Luxury Trade at this Stage of the season, myself included.
Crouching, I too love the old Salada's.

  7. bean says:

Cyril rioli a good option for nic nat priced @ 430k?????

    • Sulzeer says:

Had the same thought, Cyril is a good point if difference with not many picking him up since his return and he's cheap

    • Bruds says:

my only problem is i can't see sydney in the sc grand final letting rioli run around without copping some serious attention but at that price, delicious!

    • BestCoastEagles says:

Great choice made the same move this week.

  8. Help says:

Any word on Jobe? Rumor has it his playing this week against collingwood?

I've held onto him. With 5 trades remaining. $61,200 in the bank

    Midfield – Ablett, Pendles, Swan, J.Selwood, J.Kennedy, R Griffin, Cotchin, T Mitchell
    Int – Watson & Hrovat

Who would you slot into my midfield to complete?

Should i trade mitchell or watson?

  9. Hot_Pies says:

    Bryce Gibbs to Michael Johnston.

    Thoughts?

    • Rocksta says:

      Waste

      • Hot_Pies says:

        Gibbs has been rubbish.

        Last 4 rounds, 59, 69, 60 & 96 against Gold Coast.

Will these scores get any better? ATM they SUCK!

        • Rocksta says:

Malthouse has been trying him as a run with player, being why his scores were low.
He was freed up this week being why he almost cracked the Ton.
He will score consistent 90 plus provided Mick let's him roam.
WRT Johnston, I had him last year and even though he's a good player, he can go missing.
          Thus, a waste Trade IMO

    • BestCoastEagles says:

Agree with Rocksta. Gibbs had a tagging role for week's while Robinson was not there now Robbo is back his scores will improve. Johnson is scoring OK without Luke McPharlin being there other wise i think he is a spud.

  10. Bruds says:

hey community! i only have the 2 trades left and i have nic nat and am on the verge of top 10,000 plus top 4 in all 5 leagues and want to win most of them if i can, should i look at getting in kreuzer/minson? or should i put cox in the ruck and look at getting in walker/buddy, i think i want to do a mid upgrade going into the finals should griffen, barlow or beams be a priority, barlow great run but griffen has had massive scores against the teams he's playing again in finals and beams looks the goods? also that would require upgrading either priddis or jpk, is that necessary?

    • BestCoastEagles says:

In the same boat Bruds, i have gone Nic Nat to Rioli big risk i know. I just have a good feeling about Cyril and i think he will bang some great scores out now that Big Lance is back on song. Sometimes you need more balls than a beanbag and go the risk.

  11. Remy says:

Is this a good trade guys?
    Mayes~Hawkins??

    • Bruds says:

if you're really cash restricted otherwise i reckon walker, stevie j, martin and probably rockliff would have to be priorities if you don't have any of them. after that maybe bartel, buddy, those six are a pretty decent forward line if you ask me!

    • Super_Freak says:

Absolutely not. Don't get sucked in by his 1 good score. Much better options if you can afford to trade up, otherwise hold.

  12. Jimmy says:

What to do with Staker if he is on my field and i only have 3 trades left with 14k in the bank?

    • Bruds says:

      back or forward?

    • Bruds says:

I wouldn't want to be playing him through finals, more as an emergency but i think you'll have to upgrade him
if back you can actually downgrade to gibbs, hartlett or duffield
forward you can swap for stokes, rioli although watch his injuries or even zorko who hasn't been terrible lately (80-90) but if you can go to a full premium such as stevie j that would be you best bet if you can make cash from a downgrade.

      • Jimmy says:

his in my backline, already got goddard, gibbs, shaw, thompson, mckenzie

        • Bruds says:

hartlett is looking in decent form, heppell would be the one i would want but he is an extra 80k roughly, if you can make cash heppell would be best but hartlett or duffield would be best if you want to use just one trade

    • Joey Joe Joe says:

Hold Staker. Backlines have been terrible all year and there are no obvious choices out there to pick from aside from Goddard and Heppell.

Better to have a player who has tonned up 3 of past 4 matches than waste trade to another player who cannot demonstrate consistency (refer Gibbs, Ibbotson, etc).

      • Super_Freak says:

I agree. Staker has had good form recently bar one game. Hartlett is a super burnman, trade in at your own peril.

    • Dolls_87 says:

Hold Staker, unless you need to make the 8. Trades are gold right now.

    • BestCoastEagles says:

Staker had one bad game apart from that he has done OK. You have 3 trades left with 14K witch means you have to burn two trades to get a Premo. I would hold of this week as i agree with Jordan101. Reassess next week.

  13. Jay says:

Super podcast guys!!! Been loving listening to it all year…..great humor and most of all wonderful insightful info on Fantasy Football!!

  14. Er, Significant Jock says:

    Any love for N. Vardy?

  15. Hamish says:

what should i do about stokes at geelong!?
He's been so consistent all year, but did he take a knock when he was left out of the team in round 16?
    Last 4 weeks he's scored 67, DNP, 68, 59.
Should I get rid of him now and stop the bleeding or will he come good? my forward line is:
Martin, Rockliff, Cloke, Kennedy, Stokes, Johnson (Hawkins, McBean)

    • Hamish says:

maybe i should slot in mayne or n.riewoldt when he drops in price a bit more?

    • Super_Freak says:

I would trade down Hawkins to a Rook and use money to upgrade Stokes/Cloke or someone else in side if required. Hawkins is a Fantasy spud and that's a fair waste of cash sitting on your bench that could be put to better use elsewhere.

Just make sure the rookie gets games, otherwise you wont have any cover in fwd.

  16. Toonking says:

Hey community, I have nicholls r2….should I upgrade to mummy? Have 4 trades left – need to win 2 make my 8?

    • Toonking says:

Also am playing staker as D6….what to do with hanley???

      • Rocksta says:

        Mate,
If you need to win to make the 8, I reckon you just need to roll the dice.
I'd trade out Nicholls and Staker. They are both worth over $400K and as such you should be able to get 2 good replacements.
Hanley may very well be back next week and he is hard to replace because of his high ceiling. As such, you need to hold him for at least 1 more week IMO

        • Toonking says:

          Thanks Rocksta

        • Joey Joe Joe says:

Why trade out Staker? One bad week is nothing compared to the problems we have had across nearly the whole backline.

Trade Nicholls, definetely, but save your trade on Staker and wait for Hanley to come back (he will be worth the wait – looked amazing prior to the injury).

  17. CashCows says:

This no trading ban i have enforced on myself is killing me….dropped out of top 4.. hopefully i can sneak back in and storm home!

  18. CashCows says:

Bob Murphy handy POD def, only owned by 1.7%!
AVG 107/106 for the last 3/5, still priced well 485k BE 75 with Brisbane and Melb last 2 games

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

Great player! Started the game against WCE pretty slowly before 'crawling' to a 147! Was immense in the last three quarters.

  19. Ryan says:

I have 7 trades left, lots of cash.

I'm thinking of taking out Stokes for Stevie J/Martin. Which one?

Also are there any FWD downgrade options? I want to get rid of Mayes, he has a massive break even.

    • Devilz says:

Stevie J for sure had him most of season, just got Martin myself and is in good form and looks fit now however Stevie J is just a beast ave 119 i think and plays a few more at skilled, his pricey but could be the one who gets you over the line.

Cheap options maybe Cyril or even Tom Hawkins?

    • CashCows says:

Orinoco flow – Trade away, trade away, trade away

    • SCannonymous says:

Yeah StevieJ more midfield time, more consistent than Martin and he is clearly the top scoring forward.

    • Super_Freak says:

Have Martin & Stevie J , but my choice would be SJ. He is a gun, when he isn't suspended. I wouldn't trade Mayes down if he is on field, you need to trade up. I wouldn't touch Hawkins though, Cyril is a better option.

  20. Devilz says:

Hey Jock, how about downgrade option – Josh Hall (GC) for Nicholls?

Dropped for Charlie Dixon. He should come back in for Nicholls. Extra 30k compared to Brodie Grundy however Hall may play out the season so will be stronger coverage just incase someone breaks down. Also trading Jackson Thurlow (Staker moved to DEF) to bring in my final FWD, going for Dusty Martin.
Gives me Staker & Crisby to cover for Hanley.

Also thinking of upgrading Macaffer (bench) next week into FWD/RUCK or FWD/MID coverage for finals. No longer have a ruck swingset, do you feel this is more important then a 400-500k Mid as coverage on the bench? 6 trades left, top 4 all leagues, flying high – cheers

    • SCannonymous says:

Not sure about Josh Hall – who else have GC got though? Perhaps consider Vardy at 277? Getting Staker back is a reasonable aim, do your trade Thrulow or Hanley though? I would be tempted to get the points of Dustin Martin or Jordan Lewis into the team. What effect does holding your trades have on your finals campaign (are you top 4 going for league win or after maximum overall points). Good Luck.

  21. Nathan says:

Thoughts on bringing in big Charlie Dixon??

    • Joey Joe Joe says:

      Burnman. Avoid.

    • SCannonymous says:

He's average for game time played is very good. He has upset a lot of coaches with his start stop season. If he is injury free it could be a good POD and give good returns. Brave coaches win premierships, I'd be tempted.

  22. Dean says:

What are your thoughts on trading Tom Mitchell for Leigh Montagna?
or should I trade Sam Mitchell?

  23. john says:

Jock just gotta say I BLOODY LOVE YA MATE. Came 13th this week overall with Ablett captain, if had Swan captain, first or second. youre a star

  24. James says:

    Hey Jock, Crouching and Higgo,

Have 6 trades left and $470,200 in the bank. Should I trade Nicholls to Kreuzer and upgrade Hanley to McKenzie? This will leave me with $302,000 in the bank and 4 trades left coming into the finals. The first week of the finals I want to upgrade Crouch to Dayne Beams. What are your thoughts on these trades?

    Cheers

    • ABC says:

Solid thinking. I'd hold Hanley though. Who've you got as cover? Surely the way the backline's going this year there are worse performers.

      • James says:

Clisby is my current backline emergancy for Hanley.

With Brisbane out of the finals they may rest Hanley for the rest of the season. Might have to trade him? Thoughts?

        • Gilly says:

Vossy needs to keep winning to keep his job, don't think that resting Hanley is an option.

  25. ShinbonerSpirit says:

Interesting news for Nic Nat owners (like me). Worsfold says that he refuses to give up on 2013 and will not send his injured Eagle stars off for early surgeries. Nic Nat is unlikely to return this week, but is a possibility for the week after. I'm holding.

    • Genco says:

Spot on mate. As he isn't coming back from a major injury, and isn't going through surgery, he should be back after a rest to settl his soreness. He will be stronger and fitter, and will once again start bringing out those consistent 100's.

  26. matty says:

Hey guys am pretty new to this caper and wasted a lot of trades early. Am currently sitting pretty good but unfortunately I have nicholls as my r2, witts and rowe on the bench. I have cox and roughead in my forward line too. But, I only have a grand in the bank and one trade left. Do I trade? Any shifty maneuvering? Any advice would be welcome!

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

Switch Rowe with Cox/Roughie and bring on your forward sub (if it's Staker, or someone capable of decent scores. If not, just play Witts.

      • matty says:

Lamb and t. Lee on the bench. I think I will have to go witts. Ps go roos. Sammy wright back in this week to tag stevie j I reckon

  27. NoviceCoach says:

Does anyone know how much longer are Jolly and Hudson unavailable?

  28. NoviceCoach says:

What are the signs that SC has got hold of your life. Is cheering the injury of a player in your opposition coach's team wrong?

    • SCannonymous says:

Novice, at SCannonymous we suggest that if you recognise three or more of these signs, then you do have an obsession that may need to be acknowledged:
-Not having at least 2 consecutive days in a week, free from SC site visiting and or discussion.
-Carrying a list of your opponents players and wearing an earpiece at formal gatherings (eg weddings) to check in on player progress over the weekend. (Or regular i-phone access that interferes with social inclusion).
-Reciting in your mind your team from backs to forwards when your wife or girlfriend is talking to you.
-Calculating possible trade sums on the condensation of the shower screen or mirror.
-Creating complicated spreadsheets to crunch player data and keeping the intellectual property to yourself.
I'd love to hear from others what signs they have recognised that indicated to them that SC had become more than a passing interest (but don't worry there are less healthy obsessions and you are part of a great community).

  29. Purple Haze says:

    Hey Community, need some help!
I have the injured swallow and nicholls and i figure swallow is a must get out for another solid premium. but he has dropped over the past few weeks, which has brought him down to 446k. and i only have 71k in the bank. but i was thinking that i could maybe downgrade nicholls since hes injured or even daw to get the money for a solid premium. thoughts?

    this is my current team:

Back- Goddard, Shaw, Heppell, Duffield, Ibbotson and Hanley (Clisby, Coloquhon)

Mid- Ablett, Pendlebury, Griffen, Barlow, Kennedy, Cotchin, Swallow and T.Mitchell (Hrovat, K.Martin)

    Ruck- Minson, Nicholls (Rowe, Dawe)

Fwd- Walker, Cox, Kennedy, Buddy, Ryder, Bartel (Lee, Daniher)

    Help would be much appreciated!

    • Purple Haze says:

Only have 4 trades left aswell

      • Joey Jo JO says:

Nichols out. Swing cox to ruck. Bring in Rioli.

Swallow out. Bring in Fyfe or S. Mitchell

    • Super_Freak says:

Yeah you have some problems there. Swallow would be the first priority as you have Rowe to cover Nicholls. Agree with Joey, Fyfe is probably your best option. Nicholls may return soon, but haven't heard a lot regarding his injury

  30. chandanrajdb says:

    Hello Community…..

Who will be the best pick between……

    Dustin Martin Vs Andrew Walker…..????

    Cheers,
    Raj…..

  31. @Jacko2128 says:

play duffield or staker this week?

  32. Pete says:

Podcast not syncing up on iphone?

  33. Eagler says:

    Hey Community,

My first year with SC and I’ve smashed through my trades. I’ve got 1 left and I’ve got 5th place on my work league. I’ve got no coverage on my forward bench. Should I trade out Nic Nat or hold and hope for no injuries?

    Cheers

    • Bruce says:

      Hold

      • Jimmy says:

Might as well make the trade. Nic Nat not coming back for a couple of weeks at best – and he won't be any better when he gets back… Needs the off season to get himself right

  34. Doieski says:

Saunders good pick for next year yes or no?

    • Dan says:

price will be inflated so no

    • SCannonymous says:

Doieski, I believe he and Nathan Wright will probably be regulars next year. I'm not so sure his price will be that overinflated. His game time has been limited this year. He seems a better player than a SC scorer. If he is at around 200K, I think you'll get reasonable return and good job security in a list that needs to build with these younger players (and if you can get backs returning above their price this is a win I reckon). In my opinion both he and Nathan Wright have the potential to move into the midfield in years to come. I will be considering one of them for next year.

  35. Rocksta says:

    Community,
I have held Watson in the anticipation that he will be back for finals. This seems to be on track however there was an article about Jobe today saying that he believes he
is ready to go this week pending the surgeons approval. That same article however also said that if ASADA sights any players for breaches in their report due out next week, those players are to be automatically suspended unless the AFL intervenes.
In the unlikely event that the AFL does this, they reckon it will be a 2 week process minimum.
So I ask, what is a Supercoach to do?

    • Dan says:

wait for teams to be announced, then go from there. strongly advised to hold if your team is already good

  36. Rocksta says:

I've just re- read the article and have got it slightly wrong:
It is the AFL that would sight the players in the form of issuing 'Infraction Notices'. The AFL will take advice from ASADA whether infraction notices for particular players are warranted.
If they are issued to players, those players will be suspended. This can only be overturned by the AFL Commission, and his process could take 2 or more weeks.
It is on The Herald Sun Superfooty website in The Jobe raring to go article. You would think that the AFL wouldn't want to destabilise the season in this fashion and rather deal with it at seasons end. But with all the media scrutiny around this issue, they may not have a choice
If Jobe does play this week, he has a BE of 177, which he very most likely will not achieve. If he is then sighted next week, he will be worth less.
With all this uncertainty, what is a Supercoach to do?
I have enough money to turn him into Barlow this week, but most likely wont next week.
    Thoughts anyone?

  37. luke says:

    Hi jock and community!
My team prior to round 19 is:

    Trades Left: 4 || Remaining Salary Cap: $48, 200

    Defense:
Goddard, Hartlett, Shaw, Gibbs, Heppell, Hanley (Clisby, Frost)

    Midfield:
Ablett, Pendlebury, Swan, Selwood, Dangerfield, Cotchin, Priddis, Fyfe (Mitchell, Hrovat)

    Ruck:
    Minson, Nicholls (Mcbean, Currie)

    Forward:
Cox, Bartel, Rockliff, Franklin, Kennedy, Martin (Staker, Daniher)

With only 4 trades left, and 1 week left till finals, I am too reluctant to make a trade this week, but with my team pulling up another injury (Nicholls), I have dazed and am lost. With no clue what to do this week, I desperately need some help and advice. With no valid ruck coverage to cover for Nicholls, I am not sure if I should trade him out or not. To me, the most logical decision is to swing cox into the ruck via Mcbean, and put Staker off the bench into my forward. This will save me trades and cover for Nicholls until he returns from injury. If there are any other smarter moves to make, please let me know and suggest anything else in other areas of my team if possible.

    Thanks in advance,
    luke

    • CashCows says:

Probably the best move is the one you have described, Stakes has been playing well, (scoring almost on par with Cox correction better!)
Cox is on 76/84 for the past 3/5 games and stakes is on 95/95 Including his 60 odd on the weekend., with nicholls scoring at 102/93.6 excluding his injury affected score.

Staker for Nicholls is almost like for like…in theory

Seems pointless having 95 points sitting on the bench, bris have a good run home with STK, WBD and GWS in there could see him ton up a few more times..

Also worth thinking about is what are you playing for, overall or league wins? If you are teetering on the edge of the eight with a must win game, pull out all stops to get there, if you are comfortably in the 8 then the swing will work fine and give you that trade leg up over the next few weeks.

      my 2c

      • luke says:

I am 1st and 2nd in both my leagues and I am pretty comfortable with my position. I have sealed a top 4 spot in both leagues, and I am currently just aiming to boost my total points and average as much as possible. I also do want to increase my over all ranking, even though I am not in contention of winning the 50k and the end of the season. So I do think ill just swing Cox into the ruck and take Staker off the bench and into my forward.
        Thanks so much!

    Thoughts?????

  40. geoff says:

G'day Jock (superstar) and community, just a quick one for youse, with nicholls being left out through injury this week would shane mumford be a reasonable POD, has a great history and is very cheap, scored 123 last week aswell. Cheers

  41. SCannonymous says:

    Jock:
How can the community identify a SC addiction and how do those members of our community cope over the off season (as some will be eliminated from leagues this week).
At SCannonymous we suggest that if you recognise three or more of these signs, then you do have an obsession that may need to be acknowledged:
-Not having at least 2 consecutive days in a week, free from SC site visiting and or discussion.
