Defense options poll

3 burning Supercoach Dt questions.

Defenders have been very difficult this year. In fact they have been a real pain in the arse.

We have pretty clear core of locks with Goddard, Gibbs, Shaw and Heppell setting up shop in most of our backlines but the real trouble is with that next tier of prospects.

Birchall, Duffield, Dixon.. blokes like these have looked alright for periods during the year but have gone arse over during the season.

Many of us are weighing up the pro’s and con’s of a similar bunch of prospects this week so thought this would be a good one to put out to the community:

which of these defenders will score most SC points for the rest of the season?

  1. Jordan says:

I think Ibbotson will, but I think I want to look to get Hanley in..

  2. Andrew says:

Why is Ellis left out of all these discussions. Apart from getting subbed off with concussion has been a consistent high scorer since about rd6.

    • Kris says:

      77, 71, 38, 82 aren't great recent scores.

      • Andrew says:

38 was when he got subbed off concussed in the first qtr, scores prior to that were 134, 82, 103, 149 & 127. That's an average of 103 if you remove the sub affected score for his last 8 games. Maybe everyone assumes he is dropping back to 80 odd scores I was just curious he was never mentioned in these type of debates even when he was pumping out 100+ scores.

        • Kris says:

Those high scores were a while ago… Take out his sub score (which is still a score people had to deal with) and he has 77 point last 3 game average. Tigers have Freo, Swan, Hawks so he is also likely to be in a losing side for the next 3 games. Doesn't seem like a good option compared to the others listed.

    • Sean says:

      typical Richmond supporter

  3. Charlie says:

Terlich out hanley in is that a good trade?

    • Jay says:

Can't really go wrong with that trade…..Lions have Melbourne, Port, Saints, Richmond, Giants, Bulldogs and Cats as the remaining fixtures!!! Pretty soft draw could see Hanley averaging around 110+ for the rest of the season & at 434k pretty much a bargain!!

  4. Bazza says:

    When’s duff back

  5. Jay says:

Trading out Garland for Hanley this week…..

    • Genco says:

      Why did you get Garland….

      • Jay says:

Make some cash….when he was on fire earlier & Hanley was getting tagged out of the game….made around 50-60k and now "downgrading" to Hanley as Garland's scores are dropping and Hanley's are rising….

        • Jay says:

Can't really complain too much – he gave me scores of 107,144,74,90,73! Better than some other premiums at the time!!

  6. Sam says:

What about Bob Murphy? Averaging 96

    • Jay says:

Very high BE this week of 137….maybe worth waiting a week before bringing him in…worth 498k, so quite pricey!

  7. Smittzzy says:

Hanley and Ibbotsan in this week to complete my full premium. 5 trades left what do you reckon community, keep or trade Hannebery?

  8. Dockers101 says:

I have 5 trades left, is it too risky to trade out Terlich for Hanley?

    • Jay says:

5 trades are quite a few! Definitely worth trading out Terlich to Hanley……Terlich 424k BE: 117, Hanley 434k BE: 47…..this week the trade will cost you only 10k – next week it will cost you more…

      • jas says:

The trade is good but 5 is not quite a few.
In most years a trade is required during the 4 rounds of finals to cover 'the general' & genuine injuries.
3 rounds left before the finals even start.
        Are you at full premo?

  9. Charlie says:

I dont know who to trade out. This is my team:
Goddard, Heppel, Hanley, Gibbs, Shaw, McKenzie, Ablett, Pendulbury, Selwood, Priddis, O'Meara, Ball, Mitchell, Crouch, Leuenberger (I want to keep him because of Brisbane having easy matches), Ryder, Bartel, Stokes, Rockliff, Mayne, Johnson, Harvey. I have $29,800.
    BTW Im using DT

    • Jay says:

Not sure who is on your bench, but I would definitely get some more Premiums in the MID, should upgrade O'Meara, even Ball – having only Ablett, Pendles and Selwood as the premiums looks pretty thin…..I would definitely upgrade in the MIDs – I would be considering likes of Swan, Barlow, Fyfe, ROK

    • James says:

      O'meara

  10. matteus says:

got Shaw in this week! don't need to worry about these fellas

  11. @Jacko2128 says:

getting terlich out for a forward (via staker swing), who is the best option for under 471k?

Or should i downgrade another player to get someone like roughhead?

  12. Kieran says:

I already have Ibbotson in my team and he has been consistent ever since, with Freo's run home I would get him in if you don't already. Pearce Hanley would be my second choice.

  13. Jack says:

G'day Jock and community. Just wondering your thoughts on who to get in for my last midfield position this week out Barlow and Mundy (50k cheaper)? Cheers

    • Josh says:

If you need the money for another trade then trade in Mundy but if not hen definitely go with Barlow

    • Jay says:

I dont think you could go wrong with either of the 2, I went with Mundy last week to replace Watson – purely based on 2 things……he finished last year very strong and he is around 50-60k cheaper than Barlow..

  14. luke says:

Defense currently looks like this: Goddard, Gibbs, Shaw, Heppell, Hanley, Hartlett (Clisby, Frost). Should I be changing anything or is it fine? I know my bench isnt great, but one active emergency is all I need. I doubt any more than 1 of my D6 will get injured throughout the rest of the season.

  15. Sam says:

    My defense looks like this:
Goddard, Gibbs, Heppell, Shaw, Hanley, Duffield (?) (Staker, Thurlow)

Anyone know when Duffield will return, I have good cover in Staker vs Melb so not to worry if he is out for another.

  16. James says:

Minson or Goldstein for a pickup this week. Need help both same price and average who will pull it out??

    • Jack says:

Personally I would go Goldstein. Even though he had a lowish score on the weekend he seems to smash out those big scores more often than minson, and I believe minson is tiring a bit and slowing down from his early season blitz. This is coming from a Minson owner.

  17. Josh says:

Hi community, Should I trade out Dangerfield for Barlow or Watson for Selwood. I have T.Mitchell to cover whoever I chose to keep, if I trade out Dangerfield I will have a premium on the bench for longer but I will also get Barlow who is in great form (this will be more beneficial for the finals), But then if I trade out watson it wil benefit me short term as I will have a premium on the bench for only a couple weeks. Any help will be much appreciated.

    • Jack says:

      Tough. Can you do both?

      • Josh says:

No unfortunately, I got carried away with trades at the start of the season so I have to hang on the few I have left

    • Jack says:

Tredrea said on Adelaide news that Danger is a big chance of playing this round. Reckons he's had the same injury and you can get by with a painie .. and more importantly, you can't do any more damage. Also reported that Danger has said he wants to play this weekend.

    • Gilly says:

I've got Danger and I'm thinking of going to Pendles,

He might be able to play as he did friday night but instead of scoring 120 maybe he scores 80-90.

You are in a tough spot, i'd lean towards Watson out.

  18. James says:

Is it worth trading out Dixon for Hanley even if he doesn't play this week. Both have easy draws. I am very happy to cover with staker but what is the best long term solution for finals.

    • Jack says:

      Definitely worth it.

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

If Dixon isn't named this week, you're probably going to have to cut your losses. He's a walking one-week injury. And when he gets back, he'll struggle to get more ruck time than Nicholls.

      • James says:

He does need more ruck time than him. He was second ruck man to smith and averaged on 9 hit outs a match. I don't think that will be big problem, more if his form will return after such a large break. Is he the sort of player who can still score well it's limited fitness? That's my main worry

  19. James says:

I'm interested to see what people think dixon will average when he comes back from the dead. I want to keep him as a point of difference and with an easy run home he could go alright. Starting to loose my patience though.

  20. ShinbonerSpirit says:

You might all want to keep in mind that Hanley plays Melbourne. If he plays as the typical half back, he won't get much of the ball. Bartel was playing across half back and struggled to get to 80 (some late touches gave him a respectable score). It's midfielders and forwards that benefit from the pathetic Demons.

    • jack says:

true but did you see Hanley play melbourne last year? Absolutely tore them to bits running of the wing and kicking goals, from memory a ginormous score.

    • Jay says:

His last 3 scores against Melbourne are 99 (2011), 104 and 124 (both 2012)…..I'd be happy with something in that vicinity this week!!

      • ShinbonerSpirit says:

This 2013 Melbourne side is the single most pathetic excuse for a professional footballing side I've ever seen, and I'm not exaggerating. The inside 50s differential in the Geelong/Melb game was MORE than 50! Melbourne got the ball into their 50 less than twenty times, and some of those were quick ventures that creeped over the line and came straight back. I'm staying clear, just in case Melbourne are just as bad as they were last week, and looking to maybe bring him in next week despite his price. Then again, Malceski monstered GWS…

  21. Jim says:

should i trade terlich or hold onto him?

  22. Dylan says:

    Defenders are:

Goddard, Heppell, Gibbs, Hanley, SD.Thompson, Terlich (Clisby, Thurlow

I Have 5 Trades left with 110,000. What do I do?

  23. matty says:

Tell me what you think guys:
Terlich out for pav (swing staker)

Or terlich out for either Hanley or Ibbotson
Also terlich is my d6 and staker is my f6
    Cheers

    • Jeremy says:

Pav is going on a 3 week holiday mate

    • Gilly says:

Due to Pav being out for 3 weeks do the Terlich to Hanley/Ibbotson or can you hold for a week and get Stevie J?

      • matty says:

already got him mate. its the last trade I want to make so its got to be big! who do you think will be the highest scoring fwd or def. cash isn't an issue.
        my team is down below.
        cheers mate

    • jockreynolds says:

Yeah – Pav out mate – jump all over Hanley I reckon

      • matty says:

Ah the great jock himself. First post mate love ya show. forgot about the pave.

        My forwards and defenders are
Goddard heppell Gibbs Shaw terlich McKenzie
Martin Kennedy buddy rocky Stevie j and staker.

Thoughts on the highest scouting fwddef for the remainder.
Also have Cox and nic nac

Thanks guys feels good to be part of the community!

  24. Dee says:

    Duffield back this week?!

  25. Gilly says:

Am I nuts to be thinking about trading out Nic Nat for Andrew Walker?

He is only averaging about 75 over the last 3 rounds, the fact Lycett keeps getting named as emergency makes me think he is only just getting up each week.

I have 10 trades left so that's not an issue but just seems wrong to be thinking about trading him.

    • jockreynolds says:

Yeah see where you're coming from mate but I'd be remiss to leave out the Nic Nat. True there is a chance you may need to eat a late withdrawal at some stage but you need to back him in while he's in I reckon

  26. Richo says:

    Have 3 trades left.
Got Hartlett in 3 weeks ago but realising i should of got hanley. with 3 trades left and a full premium team should i use a trade and swap hartlett for hanley before he becomes to expensive?/

    • jockreynolds says:

Nah mate at this stage I'd go with Hartlett and keep the three trades in the kick. You'll be happy you did expecially as pre finals/late season resting of players kicks in later

  27. Loza says:

Hey jock or community got 1 more trade to make in the back line then team all premiums thinking of getting malceski Hanley or iboston who do use think??

  28. Loza says:

My team look like this. Backs Goddard heppell gibes shaw gipps sthompson (mid) gaz pendles Kennedy priddis hogdy swan selwood Mitch (rucks)maric cox(faw) buddy martine walker Kennedy sjonhson

  29. Rick Grimes says:

Do you think Staker can maintain his 100+ scoring? I'm considering using him as my D6 (currently my bench forward). I'm thinking that with D the way it is this year, it's almost a case of better the devil you know. Thoughts?

    • jockreynolds says:

I'd be surprised if he averaged 100+ in the run home I'd expect more like 85ish Would say less than that but having a look at the Lions run home they have a very nice soft end to the season coming up.

    • Gilly says:

I agree with Jock, cant see him averaging 100 but should be able to bank on 80+ points each week especially with Brisbane's remaining games. Very useful bench cover/D6

  30. Berto says:

I'm going against the grain and going to chuck in Shaw. Had Stevenson sitting about for some time, so traded him.

  31. Rick Grimes says:

Bit late in the game to be working this out, but is this how the ruck loophole works:

Have Cox playing on Friday. Have Luenberger and Nicholls on Sunday. Currie is my non-starter.

I'm thinking I start Luenberger and Currie, with Cox as my sub. If Cox scores heavily, I do nothing, he'll sub in for Currie. If he has a quiet game tho, I switch Nicholls in for Currie and hope he goes better than Cox.

    Does that sound right?

  32. Kev says:

Hey community, question about big Tom Nicholls. Would you start him as R2? I currently have Pyke/McEvoy and could downgrade one to free up a fair bit of cash for the run home

    • Balls says:

That's what I'm doing. Got Cox in the forward line and using him as backup with McBean.

    • ShinbonerSpirit says:

If you plan to do that, keep McEvoy for sure.

    • dustin says:

Rarely do we see a rookie maintain his form throughout the whole season. Nicholls form will drop off soon but the question is when. I wouldnt take the risk with nicholls as a locked R2

    • Gilly says:

Kev I am thinking of something similar, I have started Nicholls the last 3 weeks instead of Sam Jacobs (yeah still got him), my other rucks are Nic Nat and Witts also have Roughy is in fwd line.

Ideally i would trade Jacobs to Mcbean to give better coverage but very concerned with Nic Nats form.

Big call to put our faith in a rookie ruck heading into the finals, hope he doesn't turn into a Vlastuin/Terlich on us!

  33. toonking says:

Kev, I've got NicNat and Coxy and I am going to trade one of them in and get Nicholls off the pine. My question is who do you bring in to downgrade?? Vardy possibly??? Not many cheap rucks around with job security….

    • toonking says:

Am I better off bringing in Currie or someone like that rather than Vardy so I can make use of the Ruck loophole??

    • Kev says:

I've got cox up forward at the moment, thinking of bringing in McBean which provides a safety net should my R1 or R2 sit out (currie is my R4). In your case I'd give nicnat the flick, he doesn't look right to me

      • Balls says:

Exactly what I've done last week, Nic Nat is not 100%. If Cox does not start to perform soon, I'll probably trade him for Roughead.

  34. James says:

who will recover 1st Watson or Dangerfield, have both, which one to keep for later,
    any ideas?

  35. Scott says:

this is just stupid. taylor last???? david king even suggested he should be tagged because of his intercept marks. pffffffffft

  36. James says:

Trade in Ibbotson if you have the cash.
Trade in Hanley if you can't afford Ibbotson.

  37. toonking says:

Any news on whether Daniher is going to play again…..he has been sitting on the bubble for far too long

    • dustin says:

So many tall stocks at essendon makes it difficult for joe to crack into the side, only way he would be called up is if bellchambers is dropped and he is more worthy of a call up then gumbleton

  38. Jack says:

4 trades left.. Have one of either Goodes or Staker on the field each week. Should I burn one of these blokes for Hanley and keep the other as bench cover or just ride it out with one of the two each week?

Back line currently is Goddard, Shaw, Gibbs, Heppell, Ibbotson, Goodes, Staker and Webster.

Unfortunately don't have enough coin to trade a forward bench player for Hanley (via Staker DPP).

    • James says:

Keep Staker I beleive with his soft run home and him spend a fair bit of time up forward which seems to bring in the sc points. Also worth 50k less than goodes so will pocket extra cash if you trade out goodes. So my verdict would be Goodes to Hanley depending on trades. However I would wait another week as both goodes and Hanley have similar break evens (Goodes 37, Hanley 47). Goodes might pump up a good score and Hanley have a shit one and you'd be kicking yourself.

    • dustin says:

Dont upgrade either of them just yet, they both has low be so wait until they reach peak price then upgrade one of them to hanley

  39. Selwood's Slayers says:

    Hibberd anyone?

  40. Tom says:

So i already have Hanley & Ibbotson in my backline,
IS IT INSANE to trade out maric for a random like McBean (for loophole) and make Nicholls R2, then I can upgrade Terlich to Malceski?

    • James says:

Not bad if you can afford to burn two trades and this time of year.

    • dustin says:

I downgraded Gawn to Mcbean for cash and a strategic dpp swap if need be. I wouldn't lock in Nicholls as a R2 because like most rookies, he will drop in form and wont maintain his form for the rest of the season. An example is Vlastuin, everyone was raving about him as a permanent D6 nek minut his been doing poorly and everyone was quick to change their mind.

  41. Daniel says:

    My DEF is currently
Goddard, Gibbs, Terlich, Ibbotson, Vlastuin, Staker, Clisby, Wilson
Thinking of getting rid of Vlastuin, I know I won't get much for him at the moment, but I can't handle another score below 50. Was wondering if I should bring in HANLEY and ROUGHEAD (HAW) or MALCESKI and HARVEY (NTH).
    Any advice would be appreciated!
Also any word on when/if Daniher will play again?
    Thanks guys :)

    • James says:

Hanley 100% I'd get on him if my back line wasn't set

      • James says:

I doubt he will play again unless Hurley, Ryder, Carlise or Bellchambers gets injured. Even then it's not a definate, I've got him to and a bit frustrated as well

    • dustin says:

Only way Joe will come back in if bombers decide to drop tommy bell which is not gonna happen because his in good form.

  42. @Jacko2128 says:

get OUT – Duffield or terlich?

get IN – dusty martin or n riewoldt? OR HOLD?

    8 trades left.
